BREAKING: Wake County to debate resolution in support of bigoted Amendment One

UPDATE: The resolution to support a radical revision to the NC Constitution passed on a secret vote orchestrated by Paul Coble.

Wow. I know those of us in Durham and Orange (Chapel Hill/Carrboro) counties don't have to worry about garbage like this coming up for a debate, but Wake County, the seat of state government, is not a known as part of the progressive nexus of the Research Triangle area. I am saddened to see this, but people in Wake who oppose Amendment One, which would ban not only same-sex marriage, but eliminate domestic partnerships already in place in some cities and counties, and preclude any consideration of civil unions, need to make their voices heard today at 2PM. From Neighbors for Equality, the alarm has been sounded...

On Monday, February 20 at 2pm, the Wake County Board of Commissioners will decide the fate of a resolution in support of Amendment One. The resolution is being introduced by Republican Paul Coble (@PaulCobleNC), Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. Coble is running for US Congress in the 13th Congressional District this year.

The resolution is titled, "Resolution In Support of Voter Participation in the May 8, 2012 Amendment to the North Carolina Constitution Protecting Marriage." Its summary reads:

"The North Carolina General Assembly voted to place an amendment to the North Carolina Constitution before the voters on May 8, 2012. The amendment recognizesthat marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union recognized in this State. The amendment will ensure that judges will adjudicate based on the law and not on activism, and keep the judiciary from redefining marriage inconsistent with the North Carolina Statutes."

Paul Coble is crazier than a sh!thouse rat

This is County Commission Chair Paul Coble's doing as he tries desparately to beat fellow GOPer George Holding (and maybe others) in the primary for the new 13th US House district.

Last week he went all batty about sustainability being a UN plot from 20 years ago.

Who knows what the future holds for Wake County and its wacko County Commission Chair Coble in the run up to the primary?

Anyone wondering why Raleigh's downtown had to be brought back to life by Mayor Charles Meeker and Democrats should look no further than Paul Coble. This idiot put the RBC Center (where NC State and the Carolina Hurricanes play) out in the middle of nowhere.

Coble is a horrible businessman, idiot governor and unabashed demagogue.

If the amendment is going to

If the amendment is going to be defeated, it is going to need to lose in counties other than Durham and Orange...do people in Wake County even care what their BOC does?

the size of the county is the problem

As I commented on my blog to a reader who took issue (saying Raleigh is progressive):

The fact that the county is so large (encompassing the conservative suburbs and ex-urbs), is why it offsets Raleigh, which I notably didn’t reference as conservative. The county’s political demographics as a whole explains the school board mess and a host of other issues Raleigh can’t overcome.

The bottom line is progressive forces in Wake County need to wake the hell up.

Holy Crap!

... and I thought we were infested with whack-a-loons out here in the sticks.

Any word on how this thing turned out? I'm late to the ballgame today.

Wake voted for discrimination

In a breathtaking display of arrogance, US House of Representatives Wannabe Paul Coble ignored the voices of hundreds, refused a roll-call vote, and took Wake County back to the 19th century.

Here's hoping this is a nail in Coble's political coffin.

Vote them out!!!

Unfortunately it was a done deal even before all the comments and the vote. I hope all voters in Wake County take notice of who stood against discrimination and who didn't!!! Vote them out!""

The lesson here is simple

At least 99% of elected officials don't give a shit what citizens think. They are going to do what they're going to do, no matter what. The only options are to (1) wait for them to die or (2) vote them out.

In my humble opinion, we are well and truly screwed.

For once

For once I really hate the fact that I agree with you completely James. Not only are we screwed, we're getting gang raped... repeatedly.
