Bank Run Burr is back, warning private donor group about COVID 19

Three weeks ago Burr was speaking to a private (elite) group of NC donors called The Circle (more on them later), and his warning to this group was dire indeed. He told them this wasn't just another virus, it was more akin to the 1918 Flu pandemic, which killed some 50 million worldwide. A few days after that private meeting, he issued a press release which included this message to his not-elite constituents: "The U.S. is in a better position than any other nation to handle a public health emergency like the Coronavirus." There are Two Americas, and no doubt about which one Burr really cares for. Circling back to the Circle:

The North Carolina Society brings together men and women from the State of North Carolina; to foster acquaintance and friendship among its members through social entertainment; to stimulate and strengthen patriotism, pride of citizenship and loyalty to the Nation and to the State of North Carolina, its traditions and institutions. The Society shall be non-political and non-sectarian. No partisan political affairs shall be discussed at any meeting of the Society.

The Tar Heel Circle is an organization within the NCSW that sponsors non-partisan events bringing together influential North Carolinians with Society and Tar Heel Circle members to engage in dialogue regarding issues of the day in an informal and intimate setting. The mission of the Tar Heel Circle is to stimulate creative thinking to generate innovative solutions to the great questions and issues that face our state, nation and the world.

It's kind of weird. Burr isn't running for office again, so he could easily disappear into the woodwork. But no such luck. Just as he did during the financial crisis a decade ago, Burr is watching out for the big guy, with nothing but happy talk for the rest of us.

Burr doesn't need to lie. He just does it naturally.

Our president can't be trusted. Our junior senator can't be trusted. Our senior senator can't be trusted. Our lieutenant governor can't be trusted.

I'm voting Blue no matter who.

Of course Burr is watching out for the big guys.

He plans to be one of them as soon as he's shaken off those pesky Senate ethics rules and can accept a cushy spot on a corporate BoD. It's what all these Republican (and too many Democratic) pols live for. They spend their time in office saying whatever they need to to the public to keep being elected so that they can work to keep corporate and wealth interests foremost when it comes to actual policy. Then they retire and enjoy the fruits of their work by joining that structure themselves.

Pro-Publica: Burr sold $1.6 Million in Stock During Briefings

"Soon after he offered public assurances that the government was ready to battle the coronavirus, the powerful chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Richard Burr, sold off a significant percentage of his stocks, unloading between $582,029 and $1.56 million of his holdings on Feb. 13 in 29 separate transactions.

As the head of the intelligence committee, Burr, a North Carolina Republican, has access to the government’s most highly classified information about threats to America’s security. His committee was receiving daily coronavirus briefings around this time, according to a Reuters story."

Tucker Carlson calls on Burr to resign

Carlson's remarks were during his Fox tv show.

“He had inside information about what could happen to our country, which is now happening. But he didn’t warn the public. He didn’t give a primetime address. Didn’t go on television to sound the alarm. He didn’t even disavow an op-ed he had written just ten days before claiming that America was, quote, ‘better prepared than ever for coronavirus.'”

“He didn’t do any of those things,” continued Carlson. “Instead, what did he do? He dumped his shares in hotel stocks so he wouldn’t lose money. And then he stayed silent. Now, maybe there’s an honest explanation for what he did. If there is, he should share it with the rest of us immediately. Otherwise, he must resign from the Senate and face prosecution for insider trading.”
