I think this entire issue is

I think this entire issue is a quagmire not worth the cost of getting involved in. One, your "calling card" is sufficiently ambiguous that one might think that it belongs to someone on either side of the issue. Two, did you see the pro-amendment rally in Raleigh the other day? A LOT of young African-Americans in that crowd....bottom line: a lot of DEMOCRATS think this Amendment is a good thing. Polls in some parts of the state confirm that, at least in rural areas, as we saw in a recent PPP poll. Having said that, I doubt it will be a dangerous wedge issue...too many other platform planks holding the coalition together. On another note, the other day I was told by someone knowledgeable down on Jones Street what we already suspected...Amendment 1 is a two-fer for the Republicans...yes, it's a sop to their base, but it also was intended to embarrass certain people at the convention in Charlotte, because Obama won't want to publicly deplore it for fear of offending the residents of a key swing state...IF IT PASSES. If it fails, he can feel free to refer to it early and often and shore up his support with the anti-amendment crowd at the same time. Which is the single good tactical reason I can think of to defeat it.
