We need a place for our spirituality, and a Creator God is one such place. I hold that it is we who have invented God, to serve as our most powerful symbol. It is our choice how wisely to use our own symbol to orient our lives and our civilizations. I believe we can reinvent the sacred. We can invent a global ethic, in a shared space, safe to all of us, with one view of God as the natural creativity in the universe.

I'm not sure I agree that we need to reinvent the sacred. I would rather choose to live as though everything is sacred and be done with it.

Global Ethic

I agree James. I think its a path and I don't really care how people get on it as long as they do.

A Global Ethic? That idea scares me a little. It sounds like Westernizing the world to me. Who is to say which ethics should be included in a global ethic?

Female genitalia mutilation is a horrific idea here, however, there are places in Africa where it is a solemn spiritual process performed by a matriarch and has nothing to do with male domination.

I remember having to argue that while representing Mozambique in MUN in college.
Perhaps a silly idea, really, but how do we have a global ethic, in a shared safe space, when what we think of as safe is completely different?

I'm just rambling now, but an interesting question, none the less.

It makes sense to me that

It makes sense to me that everything is already sacred; no need to reinvent. However, I find more and more a need to remind myself that I hold within myself the same sacredness that the tree behind my house does.

I need to spend more time with trees.

The Winston-Salem Chronicle endorses Besse, Goodwin

From The Chronicle, Winston-Salem's African-American owned Weekly:

DAN BESSE

The crowded Democratic field for Lieutenant Governor doesn't have a shortage of qualified candidates either, but our choice is clear. Dan Besse has been a community-minded, dedicated member of the Winston-Salem City Council for more than six years and will bring those same qualities and more to the office of lieutenant governor.

Too many of those seeking elected office today do so for personal glory and their own egos. Besse is what an elected official should be. Helping to make his city and state and the people who reside in them better are Besse's only motivations. In the race for lieutenant governor, Besse doesn't have the most campaign money or name recognition, but he has the most heart and the most zeal to work hard for the residents of North Carolina.

WAYNE GOODWIN

Wayne Goodwin's experience as a former state representative and assistant N.C. Insurance Commissioner has earned him a lot of respect. So much so that he has garnered the endorsements of people like Former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Henry Frye, Durham Mayor Bill Bell and former Gov. Jim Hunt for his bid to become the next N.C. Insurance Commissioner. With friends like that, we are certainly pulling for Goodwin.

Congratulations Dan and Wayne

That is wonderful.

Obama in Wilkes

First, my Dad and Grandparents voted today. Everyone went Obama, Carter, Moore, Besse, and Neal, except grandpa who voted Hagan using some kind of odd logic that told him that a woman could beat Dole easier than a man.

Anyway, I got a call from the Obama folks today and they will be setting up an HQ here in Wilkes this week.

While anecdotal evidence says that Clinton will do well here (she won a recent straw poll), with a solid HQ in place I am sure my crack team of GOTVers can make a lot of inroads.

Two deserving candidates!

Congratulations to both Dan Besse and Wayne Goodwin!

Practicing w/ My Nephew

My nephew, who's all of 9 months old, and I will spend part of tomorrow practicing filling in my sample ballot together. I'd like to take him to vote with me next week, but I'm not sure that he'll be able to resist the urge to scribble all over my ballot.

Regardless, I feel more informed about my voting choices now than I was when early voting started--and have decided on candidates to support in the Governor, Lt. Governor, Auditor, Insurance, Superintendent of Ed and the judicial races. Only a few more races left to decide and I'll be good to go.

speaking of sample ballots

at the BOE this morning a volunteer for another campaign was handing out 'sample ballots' that were already filled in with candidates. apparently it's confusing enough that some people have tried to turn it in when going to vote.

i was really disappointed (at best)... not only is it disingenuous, it's also illegal (unless it is obviously marked that it's not a sample and that it wasn't produced by the BOE--which i don't know if it was or not).

i wonder if this is happening in other places in the state? this is my first election in NC, so i am curious if it is common.

i think it's totally shady and lost all respect for the campaign pushing it.
