scharrison's blog Comments A piece of news from the day I'm just seeing this bit of news from the day: http://www.advocate.com/politics/2013/03/20/110-congress-members-urge-executive-order-enda-stopgap 110 Congress Members Urge Executive Order as ENDA Stopgap An additional 38 Congress members now support an executive order to bar federal contractors from discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation. Congress members have asked President Barack Obama to sign an executive order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating in the workplace based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The support for such a measure has been growing, but there is no hope for this happening through legislation any time soon, probably not until the devastatingly gerrymandered redistricting maps of 2010 are replaced by new maps after the 2020 census. A lot of eyes are on the court this week for action on the freedom to marry front, but an executive order is another possibility for progress on the LGBT equality front. Every year, usually around June, the President signs a proclamation recognizing LGBT Pride Month, and often offers up an executive order relating to LGBT equality. Past administrative actions have helped with things like hospital visitations and deprioritizing the deportation/splitting up of gay married couples whose marriages aren't recognized because of DOMA. Still, an ENDA type executive order is often seen as as the big one. It hasn't happened yet, but with this growing support maybe this will be the year.
