44 Minutes of Fireworks

A masterpiece, fierce, strong, meaty, best convention speech since Kennedy, 44 minutes of fireworks, were the reactions of pundits immediately following Obama’s historic acceptance speech, “America’s Promise.”

Obama Accepts the Nomination

Delivered before a crowd of 70,000, Barack Obama came out fighting, assailing the Bush-McCain economic and foreign policies.

Obama also challenged McCain directly on national security and the ability to keep America safe -- insisting that he welcomed a debate against the Arizona senator on the issue.

And when Obama went on to dress down McCain and the Republican party over their stances on taxes and healthcare, he roared: "That is not the judgment we need. That won't keep America safe. We need a president who can face the threats of the future, not keep grasping at the ideas of the past."

The speech was, by in large, meaty.

Obama Slams McCain on Foreign Policy and Attacks on his Patriotism

Obama generally avoided lofty rhetoric. It wasn’t necessary. Being the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I have a Dream” speech, it was evident to all, as the first African-American became a Presidential candidate, that ”the arc of history bends toward justice.” .

As Representative Lewis, a civil rights warrior reminded the crowd, the “dream lives on.”

Representative John Lewis

Obama spoke of the American dream, but didn’t hesitate to draw clear distinctions between Republican and Democratic policies, emphasizing the destruction and despair that Republican policies have imposed on the nation over eight long years. “We meet at one of those defining moments - a moment when our nation is at war, our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more,” Obama stated. Reminiscent of “the urgency of now,” a quote Obama has often used, the message that the stakes are high and the time is now resonated.

We must “seize this opportunity,” Al Gore told the crowd. Speaking before Obama, Gore hammered on the Bush-McCain policies focusing on environmental dangers. “We are facing a planetary emergency, “ Gore said, tying the environmental crisis to economic problems.

The McCain camp reportedly was “speechless” after the final evening of the Democratic National Convention which left McCain camp operatives scrambling to recycle the “celebrity” meme accusing Obama of being“not ready to lead.”

Undoubtedly, many Americans feel differently.

Yes, we can!

NC's own Grace Liem

About 2/3 of the way through the speech there was a close up of NC Delegate Grace Liem from Concord listening intently.

My wife was not happy when I poked her and woke her up shouting "Look, look. There's Grace!"

I texted her at that exact moment with "GET OFF MY TV, WOMAN! I'M TRYING TO WATCH BARACK."

Grace either loves, or hates me. :]

We also saw a quick shot of Graig and Betsy.

And then there was Pam from Concord who spoke. She was terrific!

Pam from Pittsboro. : )

I don't think that Senator McCain doesn't care what's going on in the lives of Americans, I just think he doesn't know.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Looked like you next to Graig!

It was only a one-second shot of the NC delegation, definitely saw Graig and his hat!

the stadium

The stadium was rocking.

Have you ever heard of a liberal shooting up a church?

I'm so proud of our party right now.

I'm proud that we chose such a great candidate. I'm proud that we are gathering around him. I'm proud that we are ready to fight to win in November.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Me too, Robert!

Me too.

My husband was so psyched up after Obama's speech. He said, "what now mofos?" lol.

Obama really did well to take the offense. It is about time the game is played on OUR field and not theirs.

Republicans are regrouping, we need to go on the offense.

They'll be the serious, somber, "grown-ups" and base their entire convention around the tragedy of Gustav.

I've never seen anything like that speech last night

even Pat freakin Buchanon said it was the best convention speech ever. And now comes a report that the Republicans might postpone their own convention....looks like we got some very nervous GOPers on our hands. hehehehe!

McCain Chooses Sarah Palin for his running mate

In an attempt to divert from the post speech coverage, McCain has announced his VP pick this morning: Sarah Palin.

Pundits are saying that they don't know much about her, "We don't even know how to pronounce her name."

Here's what we do know. Sarah Palin is 44 years old. The potential VP to a 72 year old man who has had numerous bouts with cancer. Is she ready to lead?

Palin is a former beauty queen with only 18 months in office.

Buchanan, while giddy over her conservative anti choice creds, said this is the "biggest political gamble in history."

Another 10% chance? lol.

Biden must be stoked about this choice and hopefully, Hillary will be out there tearing her up.

She apparently supported Pat Buchanan's campaign. And as a jew, I can tell you that makes her lower than low in my book.

Yes, very scary

Very. I guess they are resorting to old school Rove tactics---rely on the radical rightwing "Christian" base.

The barn

I love how after a whole week of talk about the overwhelming grandeur of the doric columned set-- the lectern ended up looking like one of those prefab outbuildings you buy in the parking lot of Home Depot.

That fell flat didn't it

You're right. All that talk about the grandiose set when in fact, it didn't really come off as over the top.

It certainly didn't stop people from tuning in:

LOS ANGELES, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Over 38 million Americans tuned in for television coverage of Barack Obama accepting the Democratic nomination for U.S. president on Thursday in what is believed to be the most watched convention speech ever.

Obama's TV audience, reaching nearly a fourth of all U.S. households, was by far the largest of the four-day Democratic National Convention, surpassing the addresses by his running mate, U.S. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, and his onetime rival for the nomination, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York.

It also easily eclipsed the acceptance speeches of either of Obama's two immediate Democratic predecessors or the 27.6 million viewers President George W. Bush drew on the fourth night of the Republican National Convention in 2004, when he was nominated for a second term.

Best part

In 2004 the Democratic Convention averaged 20 million viewers every night. In 2008... 30 Million. Oh, and that 38 million you cite, and the 30 I just put down don't include PBS. PBS had 3.5 million viewers for Obama's speech, with an average of 3 million a night.

Let's hope

that those numbers are an indication of a hugely increased Dem voter turnout in November.
