11 other things you should know about Thom Tillis

On May 6th, when voters were turning out for primaries here in NC, the Washington Post published a fluff piece about Thom Tillis, full of little "factoids" to help DC insiders have some conversation starters at cocktail parties about an eventual (possible) new face in town.

A few of the fascinating things we learned from the Post's listicle:

He sends messages with lollipops. Tillis would keep a mug full of Dum Dum lollipops on his desk. If he thought an idea was, well, less than brilliant, he would reward its author with a sweet treat that sent a less-than-subtle message.

Doesn't that sound like Reagan's jellybean fetish in a more twisted, Machiavellian sort of way?

Tillis likes the outdoors. He’s an avid water skier and mountain biker.

I guess it's more manly than windsurfing. Perhaps Tillis can explain to the NRA, who gave him an A rating, why he voted for expanding every facet of NC's gun laws, but skipped the vote on allowing guns in state parks. I guess he didn't want NRA members intruding on his bike ride.

He likes dogs. Tillis has named his pets Reagan, Abe and — the newest addition to the family — Ike.

Teddy knows that he wouldn't name one of his dogs "Teddy" - that Republican was probably a little too much of a "RINO" for Tillis.

Tillis didn’t get his college degree until age 37. In 1996, he became a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accounting giant. The next year, he completed his college degree online through a distance learning program with University of Maryland University College.

This one had me wondering - perhaps another BlueNC reader can explain to me how someone becomes a partner at a high-powered accounting and auditing firm without a degree.

I think BlueNC readers can do better than the Post reporter, obviously trying not to offend anyone, just in case Tillis winds up bringing his Dum Dum lollipops to the Senate.

Some others

  1. Well, there's the recently publicized "divide and conquer" speech, of course.
  2. Tillis also was caught on a (not supposed to be) open mic saying how the bill to disallow NCAE dues to be paid by paycheck deduction was "giv[ing] them a little taste of what's about to come"
  3. Tillis cut out of an NCGA session early (you know, the one he's supposed to preside over) to attend an ALEC meeting.
  4. There's his fundraising that would be illegal if he were running for his current seat.
  5. And let's not forget those big-boy pants he wears every day!

There are plenty of others. Those interested in seeing some more can visit Tillis's entry in the NC Hall of Shame.
