Earlier today during the debate on the Senate floor over the Durbin Amendment to the Senate version of Helping Families Save their Homes Act of 2009, Senator Barbara Boxer said she had come to the conclusion that anyone who voted against the Durbin Amendment must be dancing to the tune of the banking industry.
The banking industry walked away from negotiations. Senator Dick Durbin has said the vote coming up will basically show which senators put their constituents ahead bankers.
I've watched most of the debate and it was pretty clear that Senators Durbin, Schumer and Dodd are feeling defeated over this already. Senator Dodd says he doesn't know how any senator could explain to a family losing the only home they own why it's ok to save the vacation home, jet or yacht of a wealthy family, but it isn't ok to save their family home.
They are voting now.
Kay Hagan votes with families trying to save their homes. It's not going to be enough to get the amendment passed, but she was lobbied very heavily by the banking industry and she voted with North Carolina families.
Thank you, Senator Hagan.

Sen Jeff Merkley-OR votes for Families
The junior senator from Oregon sided with the other 44 Dems today to help push along mortgage reform and consumer protection. The amendment failed, as reported here.
I received an e-mail from his Merkley's DC office that he will be chairing a banking committee hearing on predatory lending practices.
Sounds like to me Senator Merkley is joining hands with Rep Brad Miller on this issue. Merkley pledged tonight on the ED show to find other ways to lower mortgages for homeowners who are in distress. He was disappointed by the vote, but he said he was not giving up.
We need more progressives like Merkley and to get rid of Virginia Foxx and Richard Burr.
Hi Benny! Good to see you around again
Thanks for adding Merkley to the list. I got disgusted and quit adding names when I realized it wouldn't pass.

This was one of those bills that go to what the Dems are....
supposed to be about. But the senators from some of these states are really owned by the bankers, and basically will whore for anyone. A really big surprise to me was Dorgan from SD, who voted 'nay'. He spends a lot of time giving speeches about doing the right thing, but, in the end, he's "for sale". So, once again, we see the 'corporate' world wielding their power over a government not for the people.
Everyone Dances
