A poor choice of words? Too late for you, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC5). You know you meant what you said when you spewed that hate on the floor of the House of Representative. You shamed yourself, your district and your state with that filth. And this backtracking is only because you must have had no clue how out of step you are with basic decency. The NC GOP was laughing at the anger over your remarks. I doubt they are laughing now as they have to explain to the media why the party of Jesse Helms and Elizabeth Dole refuse to enter the 21st century. (WXII12-Winston-Salem):
Foxx released this comment stating that she used a poor choice of words:"It has come to my attention that some people have been led to believe that I think the terrible crimes that led to Matthew Shepard's death in 1998 were a hoax," she said. "The term "hoax" was a poor choice of words used in the discussion of the hate crimes bill. Mr. Shepard's death was nothing less than a tragedy and those responsible for his death certainly deserved the punishment they received.
"The larger context of my remarks is important. I was referring to a 2004 ABC 20/20 report on Mr. Shepard's death. The 20/20 report questioned the motivation of those responsible for Mr. Shepard's death. Referencing this media account may have been a mistake, but if so it was a mistake based on what I believed were reliable accounts."
Let's go back to the videotape...
"The bill was named after a very unfortunate incident that happened, where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of robbery. It wasn't because he was gay. The bill was named for him, the hate crimes bill was named for him, but it's, it's really a hoax, that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills."
She sounds mighty confident about her choice of words, doesn't she?
And she said it with Matthew Shepard's mother sitting there in the House gallery.

I heard from one of my readers that her Clemmons voicemail box is full. Gee, I wonder why? Also, Foxx made Keith Olbermann's Worst Person in the World Wednesday night.

Have been out searching for the Worst Person video on other sites.
Virginia Foxx says so may outrageous things on the House floor. It's amazing what she gets away with. This is reprehensible and now instead of taking responsibility she tries to claim she just made a mistake in choosing her words. She's disgusting.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.
I live in NC-05
I have worked for campaigns in NC-05. The numbers actually add up for a Democratic victory here if done the right way.
Unfortunately to win NC-05 you need money, a lot of money. The candidate without that would have to stick with the cities for personal visits and GOTV (Winston, Statesville, etc), place a satellite HQ in Boone, and rely on advertising in the red counties.
Of course when the red counties don't get their attention, they don't excite their voters.
That said, Foxx seems to have two core principles: defense and little or no domestic spending.
Opposing hate crime legislation fits into this in only one way: feeding into homophobia.
I'm sick to death of begging the DCCC and the DNC and the DFA for funding and recruitment.
I mean, sheesh, we are getting national attention on Olbermann and Fallon. There is a good roadmap for victory here. In my office drawer I have voter data for every precinct in every county in the district.
The tracks are laid. We just need some steam for the train. Every piece of data I have is open to any candidate.
As someone who grew up in Mt. Airy
I am appalled but not terribly surprised that something like this came out of the mouth of someone representing that general area. There are a lot of good people there, but there is also some seriously entrenched intolerance too.
Here is a segment of a commentary I did 4 or 5 months ago on the local radio where I live now (I'm in grad school for public administration now here in the triangle)
That is why I'm sincerely hoping the bullying bill that the NC legislator will be voting on this week or next week passes, because intolerance is easier to prevent & stop at a young age than it is to change amongst older generations as with Rep. Foxx.
it is a hoax...
...this guy i know knows a guy, and he told him that he knew a guy who went to a 7-11 located 4 miles west of tempe, arizona--and both elvis and matthew shepard were clerks there.
so there you go.

If y'all can't find anyone to
If y'all can't find anyone to run in the 5th, why not recruit someone to move to the district and run.
I'm pretty sure there are residency requirements but you still have time.
If I lived in the 5th I wold seriously consider it. I have wanted to get into elected politics for some time now. But I live in the 4th and will have to wait until Price retires before I think about it.
Apparently I need to reread
Apparently I need to reread the constitution. one only has to be a citizen of the state to run for any congressional seat within it's borders.
Shame of our nation
Roy Carter was her opponent in November. A progressive Democrat that got NO support from the DCCC, NO support for the DNC and NO support from HRC, despite reaching out, calling and visiting them on several occasions. North Carolina's 5th District might have elected her but she is the SHAME OF OUR NATION b/c National Democratic and Gay Rights leaders chose to do NOTHING to stop her.
Worst Person
I saw Olbermann last night
And I must say we need some of our Congressional Democrats to step up and Make the state of NC look better than what the our Congressional Republicans are doing. The only ones that have been in the News lately have Been Fox and Burr. Both of them have either put their FOOT in their Mouths or have TOLD FLAT OUT LIES. Come on Congressional Dems from the state of NC get on Olbermann and Maddow and condemn the Drama Queen. And while your at it take a couple more shots at Burr too.

Too angry for words
Dear (Not)Representative Foxx,
I pray you never have to face the pain of having a child or someone close to you murdered in such a horrible, painful, and violent way, and then have to listen while some out-of-touch, bigoted, hateful, and evil crackpot says that his or her death is just a hoax.
------------
She is right though when she said in her pathetic attempt at an apology that "The larger context of my remarks is important" because the larger context of her remarks exhibits the idea that she has no problem with belittling, and dehumanizing the tragic loss of human life to someone who was not only a US Citizen, but a HUMAN BEING!
Sorry, I get a little upset, because, to me, it is personal. We need to force our party to stand up and call these bigots out for their hateful remarks and the harmful and dangerous effects it has on the people, especially the youth. Now the question is how do we do that? Suggestions?

NCDP raising money using Matthew Shephard
I'd like to know if anyone else has gotten an email today from the NCDP. I found it extremely distasteful that they are using Matthew Shephard's death to raise money. How do you feel about this?
"A point in every direction is the same as no point at all" - Pointless Man
NCDP
Below is my response to the NCDP Fundraising email:
Dear NCDP -
You really have some nerve to use Virginia Foxx's comments about Matthew Shepard as a tool for fund raising when you refused to support Roy Carter's candidacy this past November. It is precisely because of you, the DCCC and the DNC refusing to step up to the plate and support his campaign that she is still in office. He raised more money than any Democratic candidate has ever raised in that district and with a push from either the state or national parties he could have beaten her.
Your stuck with the shame of N.C. once more precisely because you chose to stand on the sidelines.
Thanks for nothing and that is precisely what you will get out of me, NOTHING.
Sounds like something I would have written
though I'm not sure the NCDP actually refused to support Roy.
Completely Pathetic
I dont know what is worse. Foxx or the small minded, spiteful, cahnge rebuffing imbeciles who keep putting her back in office. I grew up in Yadkin county - the HEART of Jesse Helm's conservative North Carolina. It is a disgrace to see so many folks with her signs in the yard and stickers on their car when I go back home.
Not only do these working people vote against their own interest economically, they actually believe that gay people do not deserve rights and that bills such as this one are a waste of time and a distraction from Obama trying to steal their hard earned money.
When people truly believe that Virginia Foxx is doing her best to represent them in Congress, they are lost causes. The only hope is that these people, many of whom who are as dimwitted and spitful as Foxx, can see enough TV clips and read enough press (but even then, it would all be MSM fabrication! Argh, death to the left!) that it would finally penetrate their skulls that this woman is a fraud to her constituents and a vile human being after all.
If you want to believe that Obama wants to take all your money, fine. I'm okay with that. But Virginia Foxx is stealing your soul and corrupting your children. Which is more important?
-- A liberal originally from Yadkin County. Did I just blow your mind?
Pelosi speechless over Foxx comments
The hubs and I were wondering yesterday if any Dems got up and called BS on Foxx for her mis-guided, biggoted lie. We could not find anything until today when I followed the link at Kos to this article at Roll Call.
So now all that's left is to find out who the 17 Dems were that opposed it. Boy I hope it wasn't any of our D's!
Some of them are

Oh, it's all over DU, Linda
and wouldn't you know we could count on Heath Shuler to do the idiot and thoroughly Republican thing.
What a disappointment that man has been. I'm sorry I gave him money. All he has done is rubberstamp right-wing agenda since he's been up there.
As for Foxx, all I can say is that there's your living proof that coyotes make whoopee with buffalo under the pale moon. Jeebus Aitch on the back of an ass in the shade of a fig tree eating a soda cracker, I can't stand that horrid, hateful, clueless, spiteful, bigoted, evil, and completely tactless woman. She didn't even have the decency to form an apology that began to sound anything different than, "Yeah, I said it. I meant it. So what? I'm a bigot and I really don't give a damn if the man's mama is sitting right in front of me. I'll say it to her face again."
Now THAT, my friends, is so full-on, forthright, dead-honest hate that woman has got down deep in her soul. For all of the happy horseshit that she and Vermin Robinson were trying to pull about each one being a better christian than each other and most certainly than the rest of us, I'll bet anyone a nickle to a bucket of ice water right here and right now her ass will blister in hell for what she did yesterday.

Oh yeah, I'm getting into the Waddlin' years myself
Wonderful news.
Waddlin', Schmaddlin', you misundertook me (snicker)
I've been working on a 60'x90' garden space with a garden tiller and taking care of a 2 acre yard. Made friends with a chainsaw and have been clearing the trees that Mother Nature took down in the woods this winter. When Rob finally said "yes", I added weights to the regime, so since February, I'm down 22 pounds and counting, beefing up besides. What I meant was, even after 13 years, we still have, umm, that spark. When we chase, we don't run fast -- on purpose if ya knowwudImean.
My migraine doctor chided my winter bearpudge so I had to get back on "the program". I've got about another 10 or so to go and I'm trying to rearrange. Been down this road about 15 years ago; lived in the gym and came out feeling pretty good. Got the cholesterol down and, well, have to admit I loved getting a look or two :)
Like I said, rain on a buncha bigots. I hope it hairlips Foxx and her ilk. I'm getting married AND Ahmoan look good for it.

(Whining) Please Rev, please
Isn't there any way you guys can make it, maybe just a visit and run but a visit? There are a number of people that would love to meet you, I know I would.
It's a long way after a long day and a long way home
but I'll see. I won't be able to bring Rob since it would be a three-hour trip home, a two-hour trip over, and a two-hour trip back. That would be after the three hour trip to get where I'm going to get to the reunion.
Truthfully, I'd skip the reunion in a heartbeat, but I got "elected" this year to give a talk on the family history. How in the world does one cover about 400 years in a half hour to old folks who aren't all that interested and young folks who don't seem to care AND make it interesting? I have two cousins who are as avid about history as I am, but three don't make a crowd in that crowd.
Sigh. A lot of gasoline I'd rather spend going to the bash, all said and done.
I'll see. I'd love to see you. Heaven knows I owe ya a hug or three.

Rob Schofield takes Foxxx to task
as we all should. That doesn't mean the bigots who voted for her will be swayed, of course. They'll take the criticism to mean the demented Congress person is doing god's work. They enjoy being the laughing stock of America, as does anyone who proudly wears the cloak of victimhood.
