Illegal use of SS numbers to prevent voting in NC

This is not the entire article, which describes similar problems in other states, but I will post here the parts that apply to NC.

Here is the original link:

"The screening or trimming of voter registration lists in the six states — Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Nevada and North Carolina — could also result in problems at the polls on Election Day: people who have been removed from the rolls are likely to show up only to be challenged by political party officials or election workers, resulting in confusion, long lines and heated tempers."

"Indiana, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio seem to be improperly using Social Security data to verify registration applications for new voters.---- Under federal law, election officials are supposed to use the Social Security database to check a registration application only as a last resort, if no record of the applicant is found on state databases, like those for driver’s licenses or identification cards. The requirement exists because using the federal database is less reliable than the state lists, and is more likely to incorrectly flag applications as invalid. Many state officials seem to be using the Social Security lists first.----States may be improperly removing voters who have moved within the state, election experts said, or who are considered inactive because they have failed to vote in two consecutive federal elections. For example, major voter registration drives have been held this year in Colorado, which has also had a significant population increase since the last presidential election, but the state has recorded a net loss of nearly 100,000 voters from its rolls since 2004."

"Asked about the appearance of voter law violations, Rosemary E. Rodriguez, the chairwoman of the federal Election Assistance Commission, which oversees elections, said they could present “extremely serious problems.” “The law is pretty clear about how states can use Social Security information to screen registrations and when states can purge their rolls,” Ms. Rodriguez said."

So, if you are new to NC and /or have not voted in this state before, make sure you are verified to vote or vote early. Don't wait until election day to find out if you are properly registered to vote. If there are any problems ask to vote with a provisional ballot. The Republicans are doing all they can to reduce the number of new voters, especially in the "minority" areas. There are already cases of the Repubs putting out flyers that falsely warn that any voter with an arrest warrant, a traffic ticket, over due child support, etc. will be arrested at the polls. There is another one going around that falsely claims the voting place has been moved. This, too, is a Republican lie. Please report any instance of voter intimidation, including robo calls (if you get a robo call or a "push poll" stay on the line and find out who is behind it), here and at Dailykos.

Thanks for this post....

Just yesterday, they had a blurb in the local newspaper for Surry Co about the registration forms asking a question which, in the wording, made it confusing on how to answer. If you answered wrong, you admitted to being a felon. Supposedly, the state has a new replacement form, but I wonder what happens to the others who used that form?
