Invocation at Palin's Greenville NC rally: God - Close their mouths

The invocation at the Sarah Palin rally in Greenville this evening called on God to close the mouths of Democrats who are “lying” about GOP presidential nominee John McCain and Palin, the Raleigh News & Observer's Barb Barrett says.

It was led by a local pastor, Rev. Walter Leake, who prayed: “Father, you said the truth will set us free. We know the truth is out there, and the truth is that the other side is lying, unbelievably lying. ... God, we ask you to close their mouths.”

Stay classy, Republicans! We wouldn't want you to say anything that might raise the ire of Democratic Voters in a swing state like My North Carolina any more than you already have!

This also from the same rally:

Palin spoke for about half an hour, reading mostly from a teleprompter and delivering lines meant to charm along with attacks on Obama. Palin called Obama's plans "a left-wing agenda that's been prettied up to look like mainstream policies."

Palin pledged to help families keep their houses and help more youths attend college. She also touted McCain's plan to offer families $5,000 tax credits to pay for health insurance -- a plan she said was better than Obama's idea for near-universal health care.

"The phoniest claim in a campaign that's been full of them is that Barack Obama's going to cut your taxes," Palin said. She then gave two examples -- one of them disproven by independent fact checkers, the other questioned by independent media.

First, she said, Obama "has voted 94 times for higher taxes."

(A nonpartisan group,, declared the claim "misleading." Obama voted 23 times against proposed tax cuts. In seven of the votes, taxes would be lowered for many people but raised for either corporations or wealthy individuals. Another 53 votes were nonbinding budget resolutions, not tax bills. says he did vote repeatedly to restore taxes on the wealthy, but not for the middle or low income.)

Second, Palin said, Obama once voted to raise taxes on those earning $42,000 a year. (According to, this is correct, but only for single earners. Married couples would have had to earn nearly twice as much.)

Obama's campaign said Palin continues to stretch the truth. "She continues to recycle the same attacks that are not true and clearly not working," Lagana said.

If you can't beat them with your lies, ask God to shut them up? Right Sarah?

Beckwith, the Under the Dome writer, was there

and wrote nary a word on the topic of Palin's chummy relationship with the Republican God.

I guess that means god shut him up?

Great post. I was hoping someone would write this.

Doubts about Dole?

"close their mouths"?

Am I correct in understanding that as an imprecatory prayer?

As you and I discussed on twitter

I still think a prayer so charged against an "enemy" carries an incredible karmic kick-back. I don't think Saracudda and her buddies want to build up that kind of karmic debt.

Oh wait - she's got the witch doctor to do spells over her to get rid of the evil that follows her, doesn't she?

She's creepy in an entirely different way than McCain.

Psalms 17 -10

They close their hearts to pity;
with their mouths they speak arrogantly

This is the only discussion where the words "close" and "mouth" are used in the same sentence.

I don't think it has anything to do with what the Pastor was saying.

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

North Carolina. Turning the South Blue!

You're reading the wrong Bible.

Conservatives mostly believe in the Old Testament.

15As in the days of thy coming forth out of the land of Egypt will I show unto them marvellous things. 16The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might; they shall lay their hand upon their mouth; their ears shall be deaf. 17They shall lick the dust like a serpent; like crawling things of the earth they shall come trembling out of their close places; they shall come with fear unto Jehovah our God, and shall be afraid because of thee.
-Mican 7:15-17

I'm pretty sure that compares Barack Obama to sinners, "The best of them is as a brier; the most upright is worse than a thorn hedge".

John McCain looks like a guy whose head you can barely see over the steering wheel...looks like the guy who thinks the nurses are stealing his stuff. 'Dad, why would they take your socks? It doesn't make sense.' Letterman

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

I'm not a Christian, and I'm pretty sure Jesus didn't plan

on closing anyone's mouth.

I've read his story many times - and he just wasn't a mean man. Even when he cleared the Temple, he wasn't mean. That prayer - it was mean. It implied that God was on one side, and would close the mouths of the people on the other side. Damn - how small is their God, anyhow?
