Whew! The last three days have been a blur—traveling on Monday, the excitement of Tuesday and the endless media obligations and phone calls today. Now that I got a moment, I would like to say thank you. I know I have a number of great supporters at BlueNC and I want to say thanks for your energy and for your vote.
I also know that there were some here who supported my opponent, but now I hope you will join me and the rest of the Democratic ticket because it’s time for us to unite this party and this state.
You can see the excitement building in the Democratic Party all around you. Our registration numbers are up and we had record turnout yesterday. We also know that we are on the right side of the issues for North Carolina families on health care, education, the environment, jobs, and more and more and more.
But we also know that we need to work together to reach out to independents, and yes, even some Republicans. If we come together now, I promise you I will be a fighter and a hard working candidate that won’t rest until Election Day and we will win.

I'll be glad to unite behind you so that we have a truly "Blue" NC all the way from the top to the bottom. After you are elected, please look at the candidates who were not selected last night - there is a pool of talent waiting to serve North Carolina that should not be wasted.

No majority of "us" supported Richard Moore. Not by a long shot. We didn't do many straw polls at BlueNC, but the most recent one I remember was won by Perdue.

If your comment reflects your idea of a strategy for encouraging unity, I pity any campaign who takes your advice seriously.
Here's some for you: making a pitch for unity in tones of condescension is probably going to reinforce rather than erode the other's willingness to "join" any group to which you are claiming allegiance.
I have made clear my opposition to Perdue without targeting you or anyone else on the basis of his/her support for her. I don't know where the hell you get off referring to me in the third person when you've not bothered to talk to me directly about my stance at this stage of the game, but I assume you'll understand now if I demonstrate an equal lack of respect in exchange.

to dissent. Don't go trying to convince Brunette to change her mind; it ain't going to happen. I don't know what her reasons are, but she's got them. It's her right. She can abstain from voting in that race if she so chooses, or she can vote for Myers Park Pat, or Mike Munger, who seems like a decent enough guy, as long as you want to pave your own roads. :)
I am a party officer in my county, so I've got to get with the program, or resign. I don't have enough issues with Ms. Perdue to leave my fellow officers short-handed at the beginning of a watershed election year. I'm willing to make my peace with my issues with Ms. Perdue (and hopefully get a chance to address them with her face to face)rather than do that.

I don't mind an argument
from anyone on any issue. It doesn't bother me if someone wants me to change my mind. I have good friends with whom I have strong disagreements on a variety of social or political questions. No small part of what makes them good friends is their willingness to engage.
I appreciate your warm words, and your position, and I respect your choices, Linda. I especially respect your give and take, your intelligence and attitude, and I thank you for your comments above.
I also respect a person's capacity for passion, what with being fairly strong in my own feelings and expression, but I think it should be obvious that I don't respond well to anyone's attempt to talk down to me in the guise of encouraging a common goal.

I think it is extremely important that our governor has a methodology that enables and encourages communication between the Gov and the people. Please, oooo please keep us informed as to the ease or difficulty of a political leader as well as a normal person to engage and be listened to by our next potential Gov.
Mikey was terrible in this aspect. If you were not in a huge mega lobby or represented a zillion people with a zillion dollars, he just flat would not listen to you. What ever he did for you or your region was because he deemed the little people should get a crumb.
Not sure if that was his intention, but that was the message he sent. With Bev working just a few doors down, I hope she has not picked up this terrible habit. I hope she will talk to people especially people outside the triangle or piedmont area.
It would be soo nice for our next gov to actually listen to us. I would base my vote solely on that one platform.

No one was trying to talk down to you. I just made a point. It would be great to have you support all democrats but If you decide not to, the party has to keep moving. That's all I was saying. You sure do get defensive when it isn't necessary.
You complain about people not respecting you but any time someone writes something that you don't like you jump on them with both feet and you can be demeaning as well. So while you are making your points, you could tone down some as well.

I appreciate your response. It seems to me rather obvious that the party would move on with or without my support, so the reference to me struck me as odd and unnecessary.
But I also appreciate your intent. This is the first time I have ever been confronted by the prospect of being not just unable to support the Democratic candidate for a leading position in the state but rather having an active concern about what she brings to the office.
It's extremely uncomfortable.
It's hard for me, too.
I kind of feel like my underwear is itching, or something. I've got to come to terms with it, because the bigger picture demands that I live with the Perdue and Hagan signs on a headquarters I'm going to be spending a lot of time in.
I believe in the party system. I just think that money has screwed this one up - a lot. I believe that getting Barack Obama elected as President, and Betty Mangum in NC 52, and Beth Wood as Auditor, and Wayne Goodwin as Ins. Commissioner, and so on, and so forth, is important.
And I believe, for the most part, that a Democrat in office is better than a Republican. Mostly.
I'm sorry that I will not get a chance to vote for Robert Orr. There are times I'd like to vote for intelligence over party.

I understand your active concern to be mostly personal. While I expect you will bring a myriad of criticisms that are relevant to the rest of North Carolina, your primary reason for bringing them is not out of concern for the public.

element. Certainly, Hagan is not. She wants to have hearings on the whether or not we should bring the troops home, and thinks maybe we should drill for oil in ANWR. She would have voted for the FISA thing, and never answered Pam's question about same gender marriage. But she'd vote for a hate crimes bill. Um, thanks?
Those are not the positions of a progressive politician.
As for Perdue, I shut her off when she shut out the participants at the mental health forum by putting up her hands in a defensive posture and saying "Y'all it's not my fault." With one foot in the legislature and one foot in the executive, she was the one person uniquely qualified to have a voice to speak for those who could not speak for themselves and she chose not to.
So honestly, I don't know if she's progressive. I don't think so. I think she's a Democrat. I think she's entrenched to her eyeballs in old school NC politics. But she's a Democrat, and I want a Democrat to lead the state.

As Linda noted, Sen. Hagan has not exhibited anything that can be remotely described as progressive on LGBT issues during this campaign -- progressives are actually able to discuss the issues without fear of the ground opening up and swallowing them. Obviously candidate Hagan can easily reverse this pattern by engaging us publicly.
And on FISA? Oh my. The label definitely won't fly on that one.

For the upteenth time, I don't know her personally. I have no idea what she is like as a person. I do know something about her m.o., I do know she's in a good ole boys club and has achieved what she has achieved by virtue of membership in that club. I've said this repeatedly.
You have no right to say what my primary reason for anything is. It's incredibly presumptuous. At best it is a misinterpretation of brief snatches of conversation you and I have had, and it seems to overlook a lot of what I recall pointing out to you amid much noise and din.
One could as easily suggest that your own reasons for posting a you have here are connected more to your role within the Party than your thoughts as an individual.
And I am still left wondering what it is I'm refusing to "compromise" on, and what the nature of this proposed compromise is supposed to have been.

You don't know enough about me to say what drives me, Jerimee, and I guess that's what I find especially offensive. I come by my standards for public service honestly -- through the example set for me and my siblings by my father, and through my own experience with state government, which includes knowing people within state government who are honest and dedicated to their jobs rather than a politician's special interests.
I also believed and believe in playing by the rules. Playing by the rules, as opposed to playing footsie with the fat cats is something the Basnight cabal has never believed in, and there's no reason to think that now that she's the next likely governor, Perdue will suddenly demonstrate intellectual independence and a zeal for principle.
And by the way, Bev Perdue has had ZIP to do with anything that has ever happened to me on a personal or professional basis. Aboslutely ZIP. Neither has Marc Basnight. I have to admit I actually admire Basnight in many ways, but not to the extent that I admire the good ole boy system that he has perpetuated with help from people like Bev Perdue.
I find it ironic that on a blog that promotes itself as a progressive "think tank," the pressure is toward conformity, and that my resistance to that conformity is countered not by an answer to my points, but by an attack on my motives.
Please, if you disagree with what I've said about the good ole boys, tell me so. So far, that's not what I'm hearing in your response at all.

The accusation
First, is that you have some special knowledge about me and my reasons that entitles you to announce to the blog that my objections are not based on real public weal but rather on my personal druthers. Maybe for you that was a toss off remark, but for me it is an awful thing to say about anyone -- especially considering that the main point of this blog is the promotion of progressive ideals, not personal agendas.
No, I don't take pride in being disagreeable. I joke about the fact that I am often in dissent, but I do not take pride in hurting peoples' feelings, and I have apologized here -- and will probably apologize again -- for doing so.
Finally, the idea of compromise you articulate above is logically extended to the idea that once a president is elected, it is wrong to dissent or object that this person is harmful rather than helpful to the country's interests.
So if your idea of "compromise" is that I forget what I know, smile along and give Bev the ole thumbs up and work for her success, you sure have it right that I won't do it.
