Let me introduce myself. I’m Al Swanstrom, and I’m running for the NC House of Representatives in District 36, which my friend Greer Beaty almost won in 2006. It covers parts of Cary, Apex, and Swift Creek.
I have to admit I’m not much of a blogger. I worked for 30 years for IBM, got a patent, and when I retired last year, started and then sold my own technology business. But blogs, Facebook, and all that are foreign to me. I want to change that, and I figure there’s never a better time than the present. I’ve been hearing from some of my supporters and my blogging-savvy campaign manager that BlueNC is the biggest and most active progressive blog in the state. I’ve seen how you’ve embraced my friend, the Democratic candidate from a neighboring district, Ed Ridpath. So I’d love to get engaged with you all in the fight to take back this seat. I also must apologize for not attending the Blogger Bash. Since I'm new to the blogosphere, I didn't hear about it until today when I came here to post.
[Talking at my kick-off event with Republican supporter and Navy vet Bill Gautier, Ed Ridpath, and Rep. Ty Harrell.]
Though I successfully ran my friend Erv Portman’s campaign for Cary City Council last fall and am now on the Cary Planning and Zoning Board, this is my first time running for office myself. Because of that and because of the strength of my background versus that of my opponent, I am a true change candidate. I'm a professional citizen, not a professional politician. I spent my career as a business executive and high-tech entrepreneur, while raising two wonderful kids, Jesica and Geoff, with my wife Pam.
15 years ago, IBM offered me the chance to move wherever I wanted. My family and I chose Cary because we saw it as the best place in the country to live. We were right. Our economy is driven by our people, a great quality of life, and a healthy environment—a vibrant business climate that generates good, high-paying jobs. But we're in danger of losing that if we're not careful.
I'm running to represent the 36th District because I am tired of reading about the same old problems being ignored by the same old folks. After years of complaining about what's going on in our state, my wife asked me, "Why don't you do something about it?"
When I was thinking about running for the House, at first I didn't think I was qualified. But then I realized my business background is exactly what we need in Raleigh. For 30 years, I traveled the globe, bringing competitors together to solve problems and set international standards. Our government needs to stop with the sideshows and the bickering across the aisle. We need to get down to addressing the serious problems at hand. We need to focus on the root causes of those problems and find common-sense solutions.
On two occasions, I met with my opponent, the incumbent representative Nelson Dollar, and was frustrated that he could not explain why things were not getting done. All he could do was place blame on the Democrats and the system. In my business, that kind of excuse would not fly. It would get you fired. The same should be true in politics.
We need a State Representative less concerned with partisan politics and more concerned with how our education system is preparing our children for a competitive global economy, the availability of affordable health care, the wise management of growth, the sustainability of our environment, and the sufficiency of our highways and infrastructure.
We need results, not politics. That's what I will offer when I’m elected in November.
I’m happy to answer your questions, but I hope you’ll forgive me if I don’t answer them right away. I tend to spend my weekend afternoons canvassing my district. I’m lucky to have no primary opponent, but to win this fall, I have to get started early. So I’ve been out there for weeks, getting to know my future constituents. If you would like to join me knocking on doors or help my campaign in some other way, or if you have a question you don’t want to ask in public, feel free to e-mail me anytime at al@alswanstrom.com. And don’t forget to check out my website.
If I don’t make a post for awhile and you’re wondering where I went, get on me about it. I want to be a familiar face to you all so when I’m in office, you have a friend in the legislature.
Now let’s turn the 36th and the rest of NC blue!

Run, Al, Run
Great to see you on BlueNC!
As I tell everyone on North Carolina, we make progress and increase our majorities by winning in competitive districts like the 36th.
Thanks for covering my northern flank!

Hey Ed, any chance of collaboration? Are there any
natural areas of overlapping interests or issues between the two districts?
Nice seeing you today. :)

SouthWest Wake
In 2006 the 3 NC House Districts in Southwest Wake County were held by far-right Republicans. Ty Harrell won his seat in th 41st, and we came close in both the 36th (Greer Beaty came within 300+ votes) and the 37th (I got 43% of the vote). We traveled around so much together, we were referred to as the "Three Musketeers".
In 2008, Ty is defending his seat, and Al has ably taken up the torch in the 36th, and I am in a re-match with the Republican Minority leader in the NC House. We all happen to share the town of Apex, and show up in the same places all the time. In fact, I am having a very big fundraising event in Apex on May 18th, with our Congressman David Price and both Ty and Al are my special guests.
And yes, many issues in common, as we represent the Raleigh suburb communities that have experienced great growth and the pain that goes with it, especially with no representation to stand up for us.
It was great seeing you again, and good luck on your race!

Welcome Al Swanstrom!
Thanks for the excellent post. You dropped by on a day when lots of us have been together in Chapel Hill, hence the shortage of comments.
I do so want someone to show Mr. Dollar the door, and it sounds like you might be just the guy to do it.
For not being a blogger, you sure did put up a good post!
Thanks for the welcome!
Good to get such encouragement for my first post. Any chance it can get bumped to the front page, Jim?

Al, let me do some site cleanup this morning
and I'm sure we can get you a little face time on the front page. We can also set up a live blog for after the primary if you don't have primary opposition.

Thanks
My campaign manager told me about the live blogs you've been doing with other candidates, and it sounds like it would be fun. I love interacting with voters, though this would be the first time I've done it online.

Sorry you didn't know about the blogger bash, we would have loved to have seen you! Please keep coming back and stay involved here - we like candidates who want to take back NC.
Why is it that everyone thinks this is such a red state?

Pointing at Naked Emperors
actually, my question was tongue in cheek.
If anything, we're a purple state. We've got a Democratic governor, a Democratic Lt. Governor., Democratic COS (mostly), Democratic majority in the General Assembly. Our Congressional Delegation is a 7-6 majority Democratic (after November I'm looking for it to be more than that.)
So we voted for a Republican President, and we've got two good for nothing Republican Senators.
I'd say we're a lot more blue than most folks think.

Absolutely
Our party is the moderate party in NC that pays attention to all the people. The other party's leadership is very hardened and exclusive. I'm going to get some support from common-sense Republicans who I may not agree with on everything but who have been burned by my opponent and the GOP leadership who have conservative litmus tests on all the issues. These Republicans see that my perspectives make a lot of sense. There are pro-choice, pro-health care Republican women and fiscally conservative Republican men who believe in wise management of our budget and taking care of our priorities, like education, which we are losing sight of. Our party builds a big tent and focuses on solving serious problems, and the GOP is increasingly losing out on voters because of their squabbling and politicking and dividing.

Issues.
Hi,
I just went to your website and noticed that your issues page asks US what we care about, but doesn't lay out your position on the issues. Given that, I was wondering what your take is on the health care situation in North Carolina.
Thanks.
Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Health care, issues
That's a very large issue I'm going to have to come back to when I have more time.
We're working on getting some issue statements up on our website. In the initial stages of the campaign, I'm really trying to get a sense of what my voters care about because it doesn't do any good to talk about issues it turns out they don't care about. I want to talk to my constituents, not past them. I want to address what concerns them, not just what concerns me. And I don't have all the answers, either. While I pride myself on making fact-based arguments, I'm a citizen, just like my neighbors. When I go to doors, I'm constantly learning things from my future bosses; some of them have different experiences than I do. As I like to tell them, this is a job interview. They're deciding if they want to hire me, and I'm going to work for them. So I have to be responsive to their needs.

Good Guy
Ive met Al before, had lunch with him in fact. He is a good guy, with a good understanding of the local issues his district is facing.
Most importantly, he knows how tough this race is going to be, and he is eager for the battle.
