I think the people behind this money bomb are being overly enthusiastic about the amount of money they can raise. (BTW, I am so annoyed I have to write this whole thing again because the machine ate it). However, the fact that I don't think they can raise $7 Million does not change the fact that once again, this Friday, I will be giving my money to John Edwards for President. Then, on Saturday, I'll be giving him my time.
I know something about John Edwards that not many other people know, I know that his supporters are still 100% behind him, all the way. Since the Iowa caucus I have done about 30 hours of phone banking in one form or another (staffing, working, calling) and I can tell you that phone calls to former donors end up one of three ways.
- The supporters give you another donation.
- The supporters tell you they just gave a donation.
- The supporters ask for a pledge card to be sent, because they don't like giving their credit card numbers out over the phone.
I can also tell you what DOESN'T happen...
They don't ever say that they have given up on Senator Edwards and are moving on to another candidate. In fact, in all the phone banking I've been associated with that has happened two times. Once a person said they switched to Clinton and they stayed switched. The second person was a man from Michigan that I actually spoke to last Saturday. He started off the conversation by saying that he had lost hope, that John Edwards was too far behind. So, I told him a few facts, a few facts about the race that most people don't know.
- John Edwards is less than 10 delegates behind Barack and Hillary.
- The eventual nominee requires 2209 delegates to win the nomination. So far, less than 80 have been assigned.
- Contrary to popular belief, Presidential elections are generally not decided by Iowa and New Hampshire. The last wide-open election saw Bill Clinton win his first primary in Georgia, on February 5th.
He said "Send me a pledge card." I said, "Love to, but a credit card donation could be used right now in South Carolina." He said, "Here's my information."
This race is not over, we're about to have a caucus in Nevada, where the polls show a statistical dead-heat. But, no matter the outcome there, we are then heading into South Carolina, where Edwards is the native son. I lived there in 2004, I can tell you, he is very popular among the locals. What will the media say if Edwards places 1st or 2nd? Can they continue to ignore him?
You can help make it so they can't ignore them, or so it won't matter. You can help get the message out yourself. You can do three things.
First, no matter where you live, you can give, give, give on Friday, January 18th.
Second, if you are within a two-hour driving distance of Chapel Hill, then you can come to a 6 hour phone bank this Saturday. I no longer have anything to do with organizing these, beyond what you yourself could do, stir up support. However, if you email me I can pass your information along to the campaign, so Send me an email. The phone bank will be a GOTV/informational effort aimed at voters in South Carolina.
This race is not over, with the Nevada results, South Carolina on the horizon, and two debates coming up, things are still open to Change. Pass on this information to your friends, pass it on to your neighbors, your family, your One Corps. Also, send them links to these new videos up on YouTube.
They are a series of 10 second ads going up in South Carolina. I think they are concise and powerful.

I like the ads
NAFTA will go over pretty big in SC I'm assuming. It is a bit....weird watching them all in a row and I would rethink the music at the end...otherwise I do like shorter ads like these.

It's the exact opposite of what we talked about with...
the Gubernatorial ads. You don't have time to be bored, everyone already knows his background, so these quick hitters will probably stick in people's minds. The music...I wonder if it is better to have the same music in each or different music in each. I assume someone has studied that question.

We'll be in Myrtle Beach for canvassing and rah-rah
before the debate and then in Columbia for canvassing before the vote. We're phone banking to SC this week.
You're right...we don't give up. This is a fight to the finish because it's so important.
We support John because we believe in what he says and that he will in fact do what he talks about doing. Regardless of the message from the other candidates, I have little faith (in Obama) or NO faith (in Clinton) that their future actions will closely match their current words.

Thanks from Ohio ... another state on the path ...
... to an Edwards victory.
Thanks for what you are doing. I don't see any possibility of Feb. 5 being a massive bulldozer by one of The Two Senators ... all three will pick up a pile of delegates. And when John has multiple state victories to celebrate in a Feb 5 night victory speech, it gives people another chance to look around at what happened, instead of what they were told by the pundits would happen, and understand that the race did not finish on Feb. 5 ...
... and then the race goes to Virginia, and then to Texas and Ohio, and by early indications now, Senator Obama and Senator Clinton will have bloodied each other in the fight for California on Feb. 5.
I liked the 4 ten second ads so much, I put together a playlist of ads and other official campaign material, with the 10 second ads as the "ad breaks" between each clip.

I think you are right on...
I don't see much of anything happening in Nevada to be perfectly honest, but I see us picking up a good finish in South Carolina. That should help carry us to victory in a number of Feb. 5th states: Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee among them.
Add to that the solid delegate counts we will pick up in California, New York, and New Jersey and you have a wide open race. But, it starts with the money bomb this Friday and South Carolina - so people need to get on it.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but...
I've made hundreds of "voter ID" phone calls in SC now and I have yet to talk to one person who'll tell me they're voting for Edwards.
It's always either "Obama" (most of the time) or Hillary (with some hilarious reasons on why, but more about that later) or "I'm undecided between Obama or Hillary".
Just my experience.

I was and am calling....
African-American registered Democrats (who make up half of the electorate) who have a history of voting. I'm making calls in the Northern part of SC.
I'm not doing a poll, I'm just telling you my experiences.
I'm not making this stuff up, frankly I was surprised myself.

I guess Robert is just really angry. I can understand the frustration if you're an Edwards supporter these days.
I'm just telling my experiences.
Sorry if I'm not wildly clapping and doing the hula dance every time Edwards is mentioned.

I just want to be honest. If i have an experience that is completely contrary to what someone else claims i believe i have the right and obligation to say that.
If I don't, then why do we still have comments on here?

On the contrary....
the only thing that makes me angry is the nonsense promoted by Obama. I absolutely cannot stand that man and will be really upset if he ends up as the nominee.
BTW, it was you that came trolling into an Edwards diary, not me that came trolling into one of your diaries.

Why is that?
Because I wrote a very personal, very positive diary, which was then trolled by an Obamite, who I then responded to in kind?
Yeah, I can see why you cringe when I discuss presidential candidates....oh wait, no I can't???

Not at all what I was saying...
rather I was just commenting on how both of your comments back and forth usually tend to take a lower road and do nothing to promote any form of party unity. I understand you both have your guys, and you're supporting them, but the immediate choice to use sarcasm to disregard the other candidate just always makes my stomach hurt a bit. Oh well. I'm just ready for the GE, no matter who the candidate is.
exactly..the sarcasm.
First of all, I'm not trolling, I'm just responding to a claim you're making, because I believe it's not true, based on my own experiences.
If you think that's trolling, then you do it yourself too. You made plenty of comments on posts about Obama that I wrote, and that's fine.
If we can't have a discussion on here anymore, then why don't we start a separate page on here for Edwards, Obama and Hillary propaganda and turn comments on those pages off?
The only thing that irks me is the obvious disdain you have for me ("Yeah, boy, I'm really worried now.") and for a candidate I support. You come across as if Obama killed your first born child or something.
Left on 49
What claim are you responding to?
About me making plenty of comments on posts about Obama, I went through your posts on Barack and the Barack tag, just to see if I was being a concern troll.
History being made......Yes, I did comment. Pretty damn snarky at that.
Obama-Oprah......No.
Obama in Durham.....Yes, to clarify that it was good he was going to repeal the Bush tax cuts, not let them expire.
Obama in Rock Hill........No.
Barack the vote.........No.
Why Obama won Iowa..........No.
This week with Barack December........No.
This week with Barack November..........Yes, to say this:
This week with Barack July............Yes, where I asked if the poster was checking in or spamming all blogs (something I have done more regularly than I have commented on Barack Obama posts; BTW, the OP never checked back in to that post.)
So, that's it. Those are all the Barack Obama posts and my input on them.

I responded to this
In this post i responded to you saying that:
I found that in stark contrast to me having made over 1,000 calls now in SC and not having anyone I spoke to mention Edwards. Not once.
I guess we're calling different folks.
By the way, all of those "this week with Barack..." posts are not mine and yes I would consider them awful because it's someone just driving by and copying and pasting a huge amount of text that nobody reads anyway. But like I said, i have nothing to do with those.
On the other hand, here are some Edwards diaries.
All of which you commented on:
Why I will be giving my time and money to John Edwards this Weekend
How I got my @johnedwards.com account.
Edwards Playing Leapfrog
Edwards does best against GOP
Obama campaign resorting to "Politics as Usual" on Edwards - Where's the Hope?
This is why Edwards is right, and the others are wrong on health care.
On Edwards, why Kos is wrong, and why Clinton won't win
I really don't care that you come and post on so many Edwards diaries, you make reasonable arguments many times and I have no problem with that, but I can't imagine why you expect a friendly response.
Soon this will be all over and we here in North Carolina can focus on the race that we all agree on, that Richard Moore is a 1000x better than Beverly Perdue!!!
{ducks}
JUST KIDDING!!!!!
Primary battles and primary battle diaries suck. Its' one of the reasons I quit going to Daily Kos. In the last couple months, I feel like the only Edwards diaries I am writing revolve around things I am doing. Like setting up phone banks, not on tearing down other candidates. In fact, going back to look, it has been since the middle of November, which is when I started to tire of the primary battles.

Robert, your passion and certainty for Edwards is refreshing
Your articulation on his behalf is convincing and, most importantly, true.
I am uncomfortable with Obama and feel that the media have given Edwards the bums rush.
I stand with you and millions of others in supporting John Edwars for President. Forget the media. Let the party delegats decide. I will back the eventual nominee, whoever it is, but am hoping and working for that person to be John Edwards.

My question is:
Why have so many "pundits", Republican and Democrat, written off Edwards' campaign already?
One should only look at the national GOP situation to see that either race is still winnable by any candidate (except, perhaps Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul).
Oh, and I am afraid N.C. will be experiencing the same situation on the state level (regarding GOP politics) now that McCrory has officially announced...
Oh, I may finally selected my national choice, btw

Edwards media coverage blackout
Greg Sargent at The Horse's Mouth has the statistics.
Ask yourself why and you'll figure out what his backers already know: that John is the only candidate that can bring about the changes the others talk about. That's what the media and their corporate owners don't want you to know.

I think people who work for corporations
naturally tend to avoid covering someone who wants to put a check on corporate power, on corporate ability to bribe officials, on corporate ability to corner markets, on corporate ability to "conglomerate." Even though Edwards' ideas are in the public interest and it's obvious that there's a problem, it's only human nature to avoid him if you think your bosses don't like him.
And, face it, newsreaders are not all that smart. They interact with each other all the time and reinforce each other's choices. So they feel like they're not doing anything wrong. They don't notice what they don't want to notice.
Katie Couric has admitted that she was told when major advertiser didn't like news coverage. And, it's not like there's someone else telling her to be more objective, thoughtful, and hard-hitting.

Being a retiree, and on fixed income, I have just sent in another ($40)check to JE. I see this as a great opportunity for the middle and lower class to have someone in the WH without all the IOUs that Clinton or Obama will have. Or you thought they won't owe anybody after taking all those millions? If you could analyze all the events and data in the last six yrs, you would see the corporate influence over most decisions made in Congress or the WH. Can't get your benefits protected after a lifetime of work? There's a bill sitting in Congress(HR1322) that would do that. Why can't it get a vote. Hmmm, doesn't cost the taxpayers anything. Hmmm. Can't get the same brand of a prescription drug from Canada, for half the price.(S1082) Our Dem leadership joined to block an effective bill. Thought we were in Iraq for democracy? Try the fact that we have been trying to get them to vote control of their oil industry to "friends of Bush' oil companies. Anyway, it goes on and on with many major issues. So, from my point of view, JE would represent a 'real change' from the usual business. The other guys won't mean having to change much when Bush leaves.
