Voters deserve to know where candidates stand on major issues. Starting today, and in a fair and factual way, I am detailing some of the major differences between me and Walter Dalton, one of my opponents in the race to be the Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor. You can see it all at www.HD08.com/differences.
I’ll offer answers to a few questions I anticipate at the end of this post, but let me first mention some of the fundamental differences I’m pointing out:
(1) I support the law banning the execution of mentally retarded defendants. Mr. Dalton was one of the few Democrats who voted against this landmark legislation.
(2) I am pro-choice and unequivocally support Roe v. Wade. Mr. Dalton has opposed Roe’s essential requirement that a woman’s health be protected throughout pregnancy and he would deny, except in the narrowest of circumstances, any reproductive rights after the first trimester.
(3) I support affirmative action to address race and sex discrimination. Mr. Dalton has not supported the position that “[s]tate government agencies should take race and sex into account” through affirmative action programs.
(4) I strongly support our state’s Clean Smokestacks law. Mr. Dalton was one of only two Democrats to vote against the vital air-quality improvement bill in 2001. That year, the Conservation Council of North Carolina gave Mr. Dalton a 29% rating, which matched the lowest grade for any Democratic or Republican senator.
The response to www.HD08.com/differences will be interesting. A fair and accurate comparison of major differences on major policy issues is not a “negative” act. To the contrary, I think it goes to the heart of what campaigns should be about and has the positive effect of enabling voters to choose the candidate whose positions best reflect their own. And providing such a comparison is not an “attack”. I respect Mr. Dalton personally and I admire any Democratic candidate willing to accept the challenges of a statewide campaign.
My respect and admiration extends to the two other Democrats running for Lt. Governor, Dan Besse and Pat Smathers. I have participated in a number of joint appearances with both candidates already, and will continue to do so. During future forums, I look forward to more detailed discussions about are clearly differing professional experiences and our possible differences on various policy issues. I am sure such exchanges will be respectful, and I hope they will be informative for voters.
I deeply appreciate your interest in the Lt. Governor’s race and my campaign. I think I am in a great position to win this race as I have written previously.
I am doing the hard work of raising the millions of dollars necessary (until we can get “voter-owned” elections for every Council of State office) to communicate with voters statewide. But, much more importantly, I am doing everything I can to engage in a thoughtful discussion about the many important policy challenges North Carolina faces beyond just having an attractive business climate and how we can best respond to them...with an occasional children’s story -- www.HD08.com/kids/Kidstory.pdf -- thrown in for fun.

Thanks, Hampton
I'd like to see how the other candidates stand on these issues. A 4-way comparison would be very helpful. The way you've written this makes me think you consider Dalton your only competition: is that true?

as of now Dalton is considered the frontrunner
He has raised the most money has what most consider the best political endorsements, and is leading in the polls allthough many voters are still undecided. Barring a major stumble he is the candidate most likley to win without a runoff if such a thing occurs. Dellinger if he is to win has to put doubts in voters mind about Dalton, while at the same time convincing voters leaning towards the other two candidates that voting for Dellinger is the best way to advance their message. Dellinger would love it if one or both or the other candates decide not run, but he can not say that becasue he wants their support. Although I am not supporting Dellinger, looking at this from an objective point of view he is doing what he has to do to win.
Dalton
A pro-birth, pro-corporation, anti-environment Democrat. Gee, what is not to like? {/snark}

Blogging before the email came out.
I like the timing, i just received the email version of this. It is substantially different than the blog post version. I'm glad to see that the candidate has learned to interact personally and not to just post press releases. It's good for the voters, it's good for the candidate.

Yes, good for Mr. Dellinger
Ditto. I got an email from his campaign this morning and thought this might be a repost. But it's fresh stuff - just for us. That's a welcome turn of events in my book.
Looks like LG day at BlueNC!
Dalton
This list of positions about Dalton is just the tip of his "business-friendly" iceberg. Between him, Hoyle and Hagan, they just about had ever business interest covered in the NC Senate. I'd don't know if Basnight was really plugged in this past session because of all his personal hardships, so I'm willing to give him some benefit of the doubt.
(If that benefit is stupid, I'm sure someone will tell me.)
Pro-birth is enough to lose me.
I'm pro-business, so long as it is balanced with pro-human stances as well.

Weird. I'm pro-business too.
In fact, I've started a half-dozen companies over the years and employed thousands of people since 1982. But it's one thing to be pro-business . . . and another thing to be "pro-business." When the General Assembly acts with the special interests of businesses in mind while giving short shrift to the broader public good, well, that's a bit of a problem for me.
Exactly.

BlueNC live phone with all Lt. Governor candidates.
Live blog. I love it one on one. Live phone session. Well, it's more interactive of course, as well as time saving. More information, less misspelling.
Could we set up a session on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon or evening where all Democratic Lt. Governor candidates that are interested could call in and answer questions?
Questions would be sent prior to the Live phone session to the principals here at BlueNC at the Contact Us email address on this web site. They, in their infinate wisdom, would choose the questions they feel best represents a full spectrum of issues for the candidates. They would also be the only BlueNC representatives to moderate (or even speak) during the Q & A period. Each candidate will have 2 minutes to answer each question. During the Live phone session, we members of BlueNC can send in follow up questions via Live Blog to a diary here on BlueNC. These questions would be directed at one candidate only per question. The moderator(s) would choose which questions they find best represent a full spectrum of follow up questions and put those forth to the candidates.
Not only would this be interesting, but it would allow us to have a debate that would make much more sense in much less time than just live blogging alone, since we will be addressing multiple candidates.
We would ask the candidates to set up the conference call together. They can let us know what number to call in to and what the access code is for A) Moderators and B) Member questioners.
What do you principals think?
Hampton, would you be up for this?

Am I Up for Live Blogging with the Other Lt Gov Candidates....
Absolutely! Great idea.
I think it's an awesome idea.
I'd love it - to have everyone of you here at the same time to answer questions. The power of the net at work.

I dont speak for any of them
But its pretty clear that at least Hampton, Pat and Dan all are more than willing to engage BlueNC. I imagine the only problem would be scheduling for the three of them.

Let's work out a time and do it. I have commitments this Saturday, but Sunday afternoon or evening on 12/2 would be available.

Again I am excited that today seems to be “Lieutenant Governor Day” on BlueNC, and I have responded in Robert P’s blog. However, let me be clear and state that I will not only just attend, but I will also encourage my fellow candidates to do so. It is also my hope that BlueNC plays a major role in this, and I would love to participate in any live-blogging sessions, phone forums, or live debates. It is vital that the people of this state hear our ideas and compare our experience levels. Thanks again, and I look forward to talking to the BlueNC community this afternoon.
Thank you Hampton, Pat and Dan for being excited about speaking
with us and discussing the issues of importance here in our State.
Hopefully, with all your busy schedules, this can be pulled together and we can learn more about your individual visions together.
Thanks again.

Thank you funluvn for...um...lighting this fire :)
This should be fun. No...really...I mean it. Three wonderful Democrats all here at once answering questions.
We could have a fourth and we'll see if he'll attend, but three have already said yes to your excellent idea.

Er, your welcome? ;-)
Let me know what I can do to assist, if anything.
I'm so looking forward to this. These candidates really are the best of the best, and we are so lucky to have them participate here.

If a date/time is agreed to, you BlueNC powers that be
might want to do some serious promotion to enhance the experience - e.g. put it in the events at NCDP.org, drop reminders at other blogging sites, have BlueNCers email their contacts with event details etc.
