I just got the following information (below). I wonder if he should receive some kind of "warm" BlueNC welcome....
Cheers,
Hamlett
---------------------------
This is just to advise you that Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to President Bush will be speaking at Duke on Dec. 3 from 6 - 7 PM in the Page auditorium on the Duke University campus. Further details will be sent out following the Thanksgiving weekend.
UPDATE: This is an open thread for protest poster ideas. Actual protest details to follow.

Is anyone aware of any organized protest
planned to welcome the scumbag to Durham?

If not us, who? If not now, when?

Okay. Let's do it.
I'm sure the Duke Blueshirts will be out in force to squelch free speech . . . so there's no time like 2007 to get arrested. Folks can volunteer ideas for posters and banners here! That way we can have a virtual protest warming up to go along with the real deal.
Here's my favorite after two seconds of thinking:

Bring it on fascist Karl! Your butte is mine!
Ignore him, they want you to protest* Rip
Bullshit! I am going to be there with my Truth 9/11's to make his political day and for kickers, the Code Pink ladies will chase his fat ass around Cameron Hall during halftime trying to drown his double wide trailer ass with Blackwater blood. Than to top it off, I going to wack him with my Ron Paul sign that says [ Dr Paul is a Duke medical grad and he didn't steal it like you Karl] and than blame it on that neo-con republican Mormon pervert Glen Beck for daring me to show up as a enemy of the State...
"Rove play the bad nazi in the Indiana Jones Movie Temple of the neo-con doom"

It might be "my" mine butte if they "don't taser me bro" with my recently new super duper pacemaker when I toss grape juice into his ugly fat facist face. This speech should be bill as
"Nifong Evil twin returns to Duke and wants payback"

Boiling up Karl at Duke?

Most of Duke's rich white boys lacrosse team members end on Wall Street as trash bucket chasers for the international bankers....If Duke lacrosse was serious about building Charactor, they would adopted the Indian rules since they have sissy up the game from the Indians. Can you see the Duke lacrosse team playing the Mayan Chargers at Tikil Sun memorial stadium before a pack crowd of strung out hunger looking savages and being the dinner menu, since the losers are eated by the winners after the contest.
" Send Karl to Tikil and let him refree himself out the boiling pot of Duke Lacrosse"
if you
organize something let me know & I'll send it to some people I know in the area...thanks
Hell, I'm in.
It's a Monday, but hey, I could use a half day off and some time in the Durham pokey. Should be fun.

The public is invited, first-come, first serve.
Maybe we could fill the auditorium with with every organized group we know of and hand him a few hours of hell.
Have you called to support H. Res 333 Impeach Cheney Today? call 202-224-3121 & ask for your Congress member by name
reserve all the seats
and have no one show up. Have him deal with an empty room for a few hours. That would pull down his marketability a little bit on the lecture circuit.
Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
I really wish that would work lcloud.
Fortunately for us, you are thinking as a caring and personable human being. For Karl, his payday would still be there and he would love, and I mean LOVE, the fact that he didn't have to do anything for the $$$ he received. We are talking wingnut Nivrana here. Something for nothing. What could be better? Well, except hiring someone to club some baby seals while trading your Halliburton stock for a nice profit. At the same time. Of course.

to ignore him is to patent approval
The world needs to know that the unwashed masses don't tacitly approve of torture, war based on lies and the rest.
So do other folks in the US.
If all is quiet, then no one wakes up.
Can't ignore him
Given that Rove (and Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld) aren't likely to ever pay for their crimes, I can't abide that they might profit by becoming honored "elder statesmen." If it becomes clear that none of these men can be scheduled to give a public speech without public disruptions, their marketability will deminish. As time goes by, their already small coterie of supporters will shrink as they become more and more irrelevant, and possible public speaking venues will be more hesitant to book them (except Paraguay, perhaps).
Whenever they show their faces, I want them to face a hostile crowd demanding that they at least own up to their lies. I want any subsequent office holder who imagines that the Bush administration set a workable precedent for their own abuses to have second thoughts, seeing the permanent state of opprobrium that engulfs Bush et. al. I want them to have no place to go where they are welcomed, no group who wants to know what they think about anything. If they travel abroad, I want them afraid that they'll be arrested for war crimes. No peace, no honor.
Patrick W. Hamlett
Patrick W. Hamlett
Is this a hog lot alert?
Oh my goodness, not only do you have to deal with global warming issues he denies, but other lots who pollute. Under Bush's administration, the food insecurity continues to rise. Is Karl here to see Blackwater execs to be the lobbyist for Dick Cheney?
arrest him for treason
i think we should all bring handcuffs and wave them in the air.
As for signs, "Sold out our national secrets"
"Karl, how did that Katrina rebuilding go that YOU WERE HEADING?"
"Karl, will a little Gitmo treatment get the truth out of you?"
"Dirty lies not welcome at instutions of learning"
I forgot to mention
I am willing to be arrested. Enough is enough.
If you can get in
Do something like they did to Gonzalez yesterday:
Gonzales endured screams of "criminal" and "liar"during a speech
Your pictures led me to find an article about this:
Wow
Well, well.
I'm always confused on how the "free speech" thing goes. But I have learned a lot here.
Since I am myself one of the primary sponsors of the Rove visit, I am looking forward to having Duke students and the Durham community get a chance to ask questions, after hearing what he had to say.
But, if I understand the content of this thread, "free speech" seems to mean two things:
1. You think that protesters' free speech rights include the right to enter private property and disrupt an event planned and paid for by someone else. I should point out that the audience will be there to hear Karl Rove, not you, but for some reason that doesn't matter. "Free Speech" should be getting a chance to have YOUR message heard, not drowning someone else's.
2. You think that there is no reason to protect anyone's speech rights against the "heckler's veto" that I see being proposed here. I think that is just flat wrong. When I hosted George McGovern, for example, I persuaded a number of students who WANTED to protest that it would be inappropriate. When I hosted the Palestinian Solidarity Movement conference, I got several student groups to have an alternative event, instead, and use it as a way to try to affect public opinion.
The answer to speech you disagree with is a forum to offer YOUR truth. Why would you want to prevent someone else from being heard? It makes you look cowardly.
So, let me make an offer. I will be happy to secure Duke facilities for anyone wanting to hold an alternative event, or wants to use this opportunity to get their message out. Contact me at munger@duke.edu. We'll put something together.
And....Happy Thanksgiving!
"It is to secure our rights that we resort to government at all." --Thomas Jefferson to Francois D'Ivernois, 1795.
Michael C. Munger
Me thinks thou doest protest too much
That said, I'll personally accept your offer.
The alternative "event" I want is a 100-yard perp walk for Rove. You arrange for him to stroll alongside our assembled crowd for 100 yards on his way to Page Auditorium and we'll keep our free speech out of your dirty little theater.
My message is for Mr. Rove, himself, you see. And unlike you, I don't believe it is either instructive or responsible to allow this creature to profit after having personally decimated so many rights you purport to hold so dearly. And it is not his speech I disagree with, it is the trail of horrors - his behaviors and actions - that I find repulsive. I doubt Karl Rove can be brought to shame, but that would be my intent.
Final thought. Perhaps you would be willing to speak on America's behalf in your introduction of the cretin. Perhaps you would be willing to give Mr. Rove the same kind of introduction the President of Iran received when he recently visited another prestigious American university.
Are you up for that dear Professor? Are you willing to serve Mr. Rove up as the mastermind behind what will likely be remembered as the most irresponsible and shameful administration in the history of our nation? Are you willing to ask him publicly what role he played in politicizing and gutting US Attorney's offices throughout the country? Are you willing to call him out for his role in torture and rendition?
I somehow doubt it.
You know....
Sometimes I hate it when you make sense.
Free speech includes everyone - even those I might despise for crimes I believe they have committed.
I believe that Rove has a right to speak, and I also believe that people have a right to protest at the event. What a conundrum.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, Mr. Munger.
Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
If I wore
If I wore a t-shirt that said "Impeach Bush" to the event I would put mony on not being allowed to get in.
Is that free speech?
Karl Rove masterminded a campaign that required only people pre-screened for IDEOLOGY be allowed to ask their President questions.
Is that Free speech?
"Keep the Faith"
"Keep the Faith"
Tell you what, Mike:
Rove had several chances to speak to us, through our duly elected officials in Congress. Instead, he ignored their demands and went on about his business. By saying f**k off to them, he was aying f**k off to you, me, and everyone else here.
That, my friend, is cowardly behavior.
When prosecuting attorneys refused to pursue bogus criminal cases against Democrats running for office, he had them fired.
That is also cowardly behavior.
When a distinguished Ambassador refused to validate a half-assed rumor that was used to take this country to war, Rove intentionally revealed the identity of a covert agent of the United States, for no (apparent) reason other than sheer spite.
That is cowardly and traitorous behavior.
The son of a bitch should be in jail, not up on the stage being honored.
And what in the hell is a Libertarian doing defending and sponsoring someone who was instrumental in the almost casual dismantling of freedoms and Constitutional rights in this country?
I have a feeling I'm going to regret debating with you. :)
Just remember: I'm a veteran. Plus, I'm not very smart, so winning an argument against me is not quite as satisfying as other endeavors.

That's me giving you a standing ovation. :)

You sure the hell do but you keep pissing it away when you are among some friends here.
Since I am myself one of the primary sponsors of the Rove visit, I am looking forward to having Duke students and the Durham community get a chance to ask questions, after hearing what he had to say.* Mike
So how much are you paying him personally for his speech and tour of peace in the 21 st century of neo-con politics? If you don't know what the bastard has done by now, surely you must be blind or living in a phony libertarian paradise.
But, if I understand the content of this thread, "free speech" seems to mean two things:
1. You think that protesters' free speech rights include the right to enter private property and disrupt an event planned and paid for by someone else. Bullshit! A establishment unconstitutional criminal has no rights nor can he hid behind the shirts of dumb ass profs or establishment police state control freaks.
2. You think that there is no reason to protect anyone's speech rights against the "heckler's veto" that I see being proposed here. I think that is just flat wrong. More Bullshit! You sound like Bill Maher when he was confronted by the Truth 9/11's on his live TV show that went south like a piece of feces in a punch bowl.
The answer to speech you disagree with is a forum to offer YOUR truth. Why would you want to prevent someone else from being heard? It makes you look cowardly.* Mike
Listen! That chickenshit phony chickenhawk can do his dog and neo-con pony show, but you either didn't know that Vaudeville cure a bad act with tons of tomatoes and Cabbage at the end of the act. Chances are that Mr Rove just might get bags of dog manure at the end of his crappy act. And where in the hell do you get off that this crowd is a bunch of terrorists. You are starting to sound like Glen Beck and David Horowitz claiming all Ron Paul supporters belong to Al-Quaeda.
So, let me make an offer. I will be happy to secure Duke facilities for anyone wanting to hold an alternative event, or wants to use this opportunity to get their message out. Contact me at munger@duke.edu. We'll put something together* Mike
When I see you providing a Duke grad name Ron Paul a event in the next couple of weeks, Than we can assume that you are for real or simply another bullshit phony libertarian living in feel good political myth world of academia
How about December 16 Mike? That is the Boston Teaparty Bomb day where it will raise 12 million bucks in one day. You better get Cameon Hall because Ron Paul will pack the place and move Coach K village down to Chapel Hill..The ball is in you court Mike, now move it or shut the f## up.
And....Happy Thanksgiving!

My Two Cents
... because I hate Karl Rove and love my Country and revere my Constitution ... and because I'm always late to these sorts of conversations ...
what we need is about 100 Harry Taylors to go up to the Gothic architecture showcase of the south and welcome our fellow free American citizen to NC. Someone else said it first so I'm just repeating here but, respectfully let the man talk, biggest living azzhole on earth though he be, then ask him some very serious questions.
Everyone gets to speak but nobody gets a free pass. What the heck are we afraid of? Seriously. He's not that smart. He's just a really good liar. And I can prove it ... If he were smart he wouldn't need to lie. He lies like a rug. Therefore, he ain't that smart and he knows it. Let's go meet the guy on his playing field and rhetorically beat the living crap out of him.
Of course, this all hangs on the possibility that he would take questions, which he won't, because he knows he's not that smart and he knows he is, deep in his core, a lyin' yella-bellied sociopath who hates the Constitution.

Maybe a bunch of us should go and fill up the auditorium and just sit there and scowl. Then, if he takes questions at the end, ask him some tough ones. When it's over we don't applaud, but just walk away. It's a thought. Personally I imagine Rove probably gets off on being protested, and I don't want to give him any satisfaction.
Is anyone else going to see the Krug Man. That should be interesting.
Rove's fans and poll numbers at Duke?
I'm sure Rove has a strong following of fans*Anglico
According to a recent Elon grade school poll and a John Locke survey. The following groups have been noted as Rove supporters or fans.
1. The Duke's University men's singing for torture choir, Transgender Durham unit
2. The entired Hendersonville senior citizens mens' republican marching band. All three motorize wheelchairs and 12 banjo walkers.
3.The entired John Locke staff and janitorial crew, All 46 of them and "Exxon" John Hood two twin boys, " Samson" and " Delilah" and his pet dog " Karl"
4. Art Pope and his 3 ex-wives along with Rudy Griulliani 6 ex-wives and his present wife " Kerik"
5. The entired membership of the Carolina Stompers a mountian milita group of redneck clogging republicans. All two members...a husband and wife team by the way with their team colors being pink and red tights.
6. The Asheville city council Republican member, Doctor Mumnuts who just purpose a "All Saints bash a fag day " at a recent city council meeting
7. That lovable old county commissior religious charactor from Concord " Coy the man with a HO on each arm Privette"
8. The Great Architect Masonic Sun Lodge#666 of Taraboro whose membership of Brothers are confuse whether to support him as the Goat of the 21century of American neo-con politics or hang the Astheist bastard for stealing their God name.
Sounds like a real fan club to me, I would suggest if these fans show up for the speech, that the Durham Duke mental institution be on hand with nets and white straight jackets
at Duke, but I'm still holding out for Mike Munger to give the guy the introduction from hell.*Anglico

Just reading through this thread has me cracking up, Max, especially your list and Anglico's intro are a hoot!
Thanks for making my day....
In all seriousness, I think Mr. Munger underestimates how angry people are about what the real axis of evil: Bush, Rove, Cheney & Co. have done to our country, and the rest of the world...
3,875 Iraq casualties to date, 30,000 American troops injured, Iraqi deaths in the hundreds of thousands, American civil liberties, reputation, faith in our government, all compromised....Shameful!
To stay quiet while Bush's "brain" retires to a nice cushy role as pundit and speech giver would just be wrong....
Bravo, Sir Anglico! (this makes more sense below, k?)
I would have used more four letter words, but I'm not as sophisticated as you, and this is, after all, a family site. ;-)
Even without your comely couth, I would like to request a replacement of the last sentence of your welcome speach with something more in the vain of:
"Can you please give it up for the Viceroy of Vice, the Duke of Spook, the Tzar of Torture, the Count de Money, the chubby Terrapin of Torture, the King of Bling, the Constitution Crashing, the ONE AND ONLY....(wait for it).......
K-K-Karl Rover!"
Understated, I know, but this IS a public event.
