When it comes to flat-out ignorance, Senator Liddy Dole takes the cake. Though she appears unable to hold a coherent thought together for more than a nanosecond, that hasn't detracted from her ability to regurgitate extremist talking points. Her latest offense, reported Under the Dome today is an act of supreme dishonesty that should leave everyone in North Carolina wondering if the sad old Senator has finally lost her marbles.
U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole has called on Congress to stop funding for Planned Parenthood because the non-profit organization provides abortions. Dole, a Salisbury Republican seeking re-election next year, joined 12 other Republicans in signing a letter to Sen. Tom Harkin, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations, and Rep. David Obey, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, reports Barb Barrett.
The group of senators asks the appropriations committees to suspend all federal funding for “organizations that promote abortion.” The signers say Planned Parenthood Federation of America receives $300 million a year from the federal government.
I am intimately familiar with Planned Parenthood and I can tell you without hesitation that the organization in no way promotes abortion. Indeed, Planned Parenthood may well be the most effective organization in the world for preventing unwanted pregnancies in the first place. More to the point, not a single penny of the dollars that flow to Planned Parenthood from the federal government have anything to do with abortion whatsoever.
By law, no Title X funds have ever been spent on abortion (Sollom et al., 1996). The family planning regulations require that women who face unintended pregnancies be given nondirective counseling on all of their legal and medical options (Federal Register, 2000).
__________________________In 2004, approximately 4.8 million women received health care services at family planning clinics funded by America's family planning program. They are predominantly young, poor, uninsured, and have never had a child. Seventy-three percent of women using Title X-funded clinics are 20 or older, and 64 percent are white. Sixty-eight percent have incomes at or below the federal poverty level (AGI, 2005a). It is estimated that these clinics are the only source of family planning services for more than 80 percent of the women they serve (Kaeser et al., 1996).
__________________________According to regulations, the amount a woman pays for family planning services at a Title X-funded clinic depends upon her income. If her income is at or below 100 percent of the federal poverty level, the services are completely subsidized. A woman will be charged on a sliding fee scale if her income is between 100-250 percent of poverty level, and she will pay full fees if her income is above 250 percent of poverty level (Kaeser et al., 1996).
__________________________Title X clinics are required by law to encourage minors to involve their parents in their decision-making regarding family planning (P.L. 108-447, 2005).
__________________________By providing access to contraceptive methods and counseling on how to use them effectively, family planning clinics — many of which receive funding through Title X — have been shown to reduce large numbers of unintended pregnancies, abortions, and births.
__________________________Each public dollar spent to provide family planning services saves an estimated $3.00 that would otherwise be spent in Medicaid costs for pregnancy-related care and medical care for newborns (Forrest & Samara, 1996). A study that measured the cost of contraceptive methods compared to the cost of unintended pregnancies when no contraception was used found the total savings to the health care system to fall between $9,000 and $14,000 per woman over five years of contraceptive use (Trussell et al., 1995).
__________________________Title X has made a tremendous impact in the lives of millions of women. Over the last two decades, services provided at Title X-funded clinics prevented 20 million unintended pregnancies and nine million abortions - and helped to prevent 5.5 million adolescent pregnancies. Without Title X, there would have been 20 percent more teen pregnancies during this time period.
In spite of its proven track record as a cost-effective program for preventing unintended pregnancies, preventing abortion, and improving the health of women, Title X faces these kinds of bullshit threats from hypocrites like Elizabeth Dole year after year after year. You'd think after all her time in the Senate, she would have learned to read and listen.
Note to Senator Elizabeth Dole:This is the first of many official invitations for you to come to BlueNC. We want to understand why you are advocating more teen pregnancy. I'll follow-up with a phone call and an email to your office. In fact, I will do that every day for the rest of your short tenure in the Senate. We're looking forward to hearing your explanation. And just think, with the interTubes, you don't even have to come to North Carolina to join us.

OK....now I know you aren't referring to literally losing her
marbles.....
I hear through the grapevine there could be an ounce of truth in that title.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

If you've heard her speak recently
you'd think she was losing more than her marbles. If she weren't so destructive and dangerous, it would be kind of sad.
You can help Liddy find her marbles
by writing to her here.
Do it now.
So by claiming that Planned Parenthood uses Federal Funds
to provide abortions - she was lying.

The story says "promote" not provide
but that would be a lie too. So yes. She's a liar.
The PP organization I'm familiar with are incredibly buttoned-down about this issue. They know they are being watched by Republican vultures and they have every T crossed and double checked 100% of the time.
defamation?
Could PP somehow sue Dole?

I've heard an unsubstantiated rumor
that Senator Dole has Alzheimer's. No one has confirmed it for me but the person who told me was very serious and not being derogatory at all. And since there are weird things coming out of her office like this, I think it's only fair to mention that she may really be having actual mental problems . . . and not just the usual self-interested political machinations like when she tried to destroy the Red Cross in the 90s.
So, if this is true, look for a substitute to step in at the filing deadline.
And if it's true, I would imagine that all the stands she's taking are being controlled by her handlers like her chief of staff, and Fetzer, and Stephens. And didn't her chief of staff last work for Fetzer-Stephens?
If this is true, these people should probably be answering to her constituents. After all, NC residents voted for Liddy Dole, not these bozos.
And aren't these people all good friends with my guy, Pat?
My question, as always, is what are Dole/McHenry/Fetzer/Stephens and others hiding?
News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,
I hope she doesn't have Alzheimer's
though I've heard the rumors too. That would be horrible, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
The truth is, Liddy doesn't have to be losing it to explain this kind of stupidity. She's been an ideologue from Day One and this is totally in keeping with her anti-science approach to governance. She does whatever the Big Boys in the Party of Greed tell her to do. It's just that simple.
I don't know what they're hiding, DQ, but it is definitely the right question to ask. The little cabal of Fetzer, McHorny, Stephens, et. al., represents insider politics and special interest influence at its very worst. I'm guessing there's some serious dirt in there somewhere - and it's probably got McHorny's fingerprints all over it.
Ya know, A...I respect your kindness, but I figure
if she has the big Alz it's simply justice being done. Just like if McIntyre came down with Parkinsons or Lou Gerhig's disease or something an AYE vote for stem cell research (except he voted NAY) might have cured.
I personally wouldn't waste a single moment of sympathy for any of these scrimy bastards. Ebola would be too good for any of them.
Stan Bozarth
settle down big Stan
as long as they get out of our Congressional Delegation, that's fine with me.
Now - if Dole has become incapacitated to the point that has been hinted at, I feel pain for her on a personal level, because that's just awful for anyone. But how would she be removed? Is there a mechanism for that? Or would she have to step down (cuz that ain't happening).

I heard the same thing
from someone in DC...and official kinda person...ifn you know what I mean.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

So, if it's true, what kind of morals do these people have
to continue to behave as if she's running next year?
This is awful anyway you slice it.
And, yes, Anglico, she has a history of doing crazy stupid awful things and we shouldn't let up on the nasty stupid politically-motivated crap coming out of her office.
Someone's making these choices and they should all have to answer for them.

Can they bypass a primary, have her step down and appoint a candidate?

Liddy with Alzheimer's
would be tragic (hell, anybody with Alzheimer's is tragic). But Liddy without Alzheimer's and still coming up with these bone-headed statements, now that's frightening.
we live in the era of lost marbles
as someone said on Big Orange...still my favorite description of these times.
As for Liddy - well, I disagree with the Alzheimer's rumor, because it takes a somewhat functioning brain to remember and recite those talking points over and over and over. But really, I don't know when I have heard her speak in months and months. She is a ghost here.
When I lived in Massachusetts for a decade, I regularly saw my Congressman(Barney Frank) and rode on the subway by John Kerry and Michael Dukakis. I guess she doesn't want to get too close to the uh, voters.
That's the Point, Isn't It
The presence of Planned Parenthood's efforts to reduce the number of abortions is the biggest threat to the Republican use of abortions as a wedge issue. No abortions. No issue. Better sex ed. Fewer abortions. And who does the best sex ed, seeing as how the schools are cowards. Yep, Planned Parenthood.
Liddy is not losing her marbles. It makes perfect sense. No abortions. No permanent Republican majority.

I guess that's right
she'd rather have the abortion issue to run on than reduce teen pregnancy.
Since when does the "Truth" have anything to do
with the Republicon playbook. It's a political move pure and simple; it's called energizing your base.
If Dole does have Alz's, that's a sad thing for anyone.
