Charlotte Area Politics

Darn, it's hard to get back in the blogging saddle. I feel like I've completely lost touch with what's going on. To ease back in, I thought I'd do a little roundup of what's going on in this area.

Some of you might remember when I mentioned the group that doesn't want Mecklenburg residents to have funds to provide adequate public transportation. They call themselves SCAT. Jay Morrison is the man who started the petition drive to repeal the half-cent transit sales tax by putting it on the ballot this fall. Repealing that tax would take money from all mass transit, not just the light rail system.

Now Morrison, who has since filed to run for the school board, has a new tax dollar and time wasting project for the city. From my post at NCPolitico:

Jay Morrison, a candidate for CharMeck School Board has decided to waste massive man hours and tax dollars on a trivial search through the emails of 6000 city employees for information on the half-cent transit sales tax. [Via WSOC]

:::snip:::

Regardless of what he thinks this might accomplish, if it is an example of the type of time-wasting, money-wasting activities that Morrison will endorse, then we don't need him anywhere near our government. There are precious few tax dollars to go around as it is.

Gee, a Republican wasting taxpayer dollars. Who'da thunkit?

The great news for Charlotte is that this isn't a D vs R issue. A Republican retiring from City Council has volunteered to head up the committee that will fight to retain the half-cent sales tax and our Republican Mayor also supports the light rail system. With bi-partisan support, we hope Charlotte will be able to maintain funding for its mass transit system through the sales tax until other funding opportunities are available.

In other Charlotte news, our popular mayor, Pat McCrory will face a challenge from within his own party by School Board member Ken Gjertsen. Gjertsen is challenging McCrory because he says,

"The light-rail line is misprioritized when you compare it to crime and schools." [>CharO]

As you should gather from that quote, Gjertsen opposes the half-cent sales tax for transit and will be appealing to winger conservatives. Low turnout could cause McCrory some trouble, so I see a pretty hard-fought primary ahead for Republicans and that's good news for Democrats who have something to be excited about in the mayoral race.

Rep. Beverly Earle has stepped up to challenge McCrory for his seat. Dems have had little to cheer about in this race the past few election cycles. Dem. candidate Craig Maddans has stepped up several times, but couldn't overcome McCrory's deep pockets and relative popularity. This cycle things will be different and Mecklenburg County Democratic Party Chair, David Erdman, said it best:

"It's been a challenge for Democrats to come up with a candidate who could attract the vote and funding, and who had the previous office experience to make the candidacy credible," said county Democratic chairman David Erdman. "All of those challenges are answered in the person of Beverly Earle."

The above quote is from a nice long article about the mayoral race found in the CharO. I'm sure you'll be hearing more about her over the next several weeks.

Finally, the only Democrat on the city council to find herself challenged by a nasty old Republican is my dear mother. She will face some punk 25-yr-old. :) Mom (Patsy Kinsey) takes every challenger seriously and is looking forward to this one.

From Cabarrus County......

Coy Privette is resigning from just about everything except his seat on the county commission and nobody seems to know what he plans to do. According to the Observer:

Commissioners said Friday they had not heard whether Privette will attend their meeting Monday for what could be a heated debate about plans to build a new jail in downtown Concord.

Maybe they'll name a wing after Privette. Maybe it will be the one he spends time in. :)

Comments

Oh....I know Privette won't do any time

...least, I don't think he will. I was just having some fun.

Beverly Earle

I'm looking forward to your updates on this race. Sounds exciting.

Julian Wright

My good friend Julian Wright is running for School Board. I know the race is non-partisan, but I also know that party affiliations will inevitably be revealed. Although Julian is a registered Republican, he is also a very progressive thinker on education issues. He has worked hard as the chair of the CMS equity committee and he deserves a shot to be on the board.

I live in Chapel Hill, so I can't vote for him. But this will be one of the few times that I'll send money to a Republican's campaign. I hope others in Mecklenburg County will support him as well.

Privette

Privette didn't attend last nights meeting. I was there.
At this point I'm pretty sure he'll keep hiding until his court date (August 22nd).
I've written much more on this on my blog: www.lefton49.com

Cabarrus Democrats

Yet again, I have to ask

How crazy do you have to be to come up with an acronym for your own group that's a synonym for animal excrement?

And why do we only have two registered Democrats in the (three-seat) School Board race?

Charlotteans, Ride Automobiles Please!

I think the school board has such a long-standing reputation for being divisive and petty that nobody wants to run. I honestly can't blame them. I wouldn't run.

I used to listen to an FM station from Charlotte

the only talk radio on my car (AM didn't work) and the host dudes were rabidly against public transportation. I think it's the station (WBT?) that plays Rush Limbaugh. They acted like they were being personally robbed, that it was communistic. They acted like it would cause harm of some kind.

The only other time I can think of hearing people be so stupid was all the applause Karl Rove got in Hendersonville when he talked about how Republicans lower taxes and Democrats raise them . . .

My grandfather and my great grandfather worked for the railroad. My mom and Granny (the real Mad Mz Mattie) used to hop on a train in the piedmont (Charlottesville) and go visit family in the mountains (Clifton Forge) anytime they wanted. What fun.

Now, I can bop down to the Mall anytime I want. I can go almost anywhere without ever using a car. So can people who can't afford a car (or gas), too young to drive, with poor vision or a broken-down car. Who wouldn't want that?

News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,

One of the best trips I've taken in recent memory

was an Amtrak trip from Raleigh to DC. Took about the same amount of time that it would to drive, and it cost something like $48. Instead of dealing with traffic in Raleigh and Richmond and DC and its evirons, I read a book.

Fan-damn-tastic.

Bus v Train

Funding Ron Tober's party is not going to provide one bit more bus transit service. What we need is cross-town busses.

There are cross town buses.

29, 30, 31.

And since 68% of the transit tax goes to the buses, I think we'll see more as ridership increases.

You and I live in a town where if we had one of the eight wonders of the world they would bulldoze it and put up a strip mall with a Brueggers Bagels and 50 condos and a glass tower to finance it.
