A couple of weeks ago, I attended the South Carolina Presidential Candidate “Debate” as a credentialed blogger and had the opportunity to talk for a minute with Mudcat Saunders, after the debate.
Mudcat Saunders got involved in political campaigns when he helped Mark Warner win over 51% of the rural vote, in his 2001 race for governor in Virginia:

Strategist Mudcat Draws National Attention
"I went out for an egg sandwich one morning and ended up in the middle of a presidential campaign," Saunders told members of the Democratic National Committee's Southern Caucus last summer. "I still don't know how I got here."
Along the way, Saunders, 55, became a sought-after source for reporters covering the battle for the hearts and minds of so-called "NASCAR dads" - the label pundits have attached to white, culturally conservative men who typically vote Republican in national elections. Saunders' sharp-tongued remarks have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Christian Science Monitor, on CNN, MSNBC and the CBS Evening News.
Saunders told them all that a Democratic presidential candidate can appeal to those voters if they show respect for gun rights and avoid letting social issues define their campaigns. If Democrats can "get through the culture," they then can get rural voters to listen to their ideas about the economy, jobs and health care, Saunders argued
Mudcat is committed to shaking up the GOP’s rural voter base and believes that kitchen table issues will win over the socio-cultural issues the GOP plays on of Gays, guns and abortion.
Mudcat talked about the glaring economic disparity, after the debate in South Carolina, citing that, “1% of the people are making 19% of the money compared to how in 1980, they made 8% of the money. It can’t keep going on like that. It just can’t.”
Update: Above quote corrected (see comments)
Mudcat is right, “Lack of economic fairness is going to be the issue.” As he said, if you go out in to the rural areas, “It Looks like Sherman went through but didn’t burn anything. “
Rural areas the most economically depressed areas of the country with the highest poverty rates. Under Bush and the conservative ideaological policies, rural areas are suffering with increases in the poverty rates and working class wages remaining stagnant---and the suffering is widespread.
49 million people live in rural America. Despite declines in poverty, 340 of the 386 poorest counties are rural.
Here in North Carolina, approximately 85 counties out of 100 are rural. The poverty rates in rural areas are the highest of any region. In fact all of the counties with poverty rates over 18%, which exceeds the national average are rural.
Twenty-three counties in North Carolina have poverty rates over 18 percent. All of these counties are rural, and 19 of them are located in the Coastal Plain region. Of the 23 counties that currently have poverty rates over 18 percent, 20 have persistent poverty.

The child poverty rate in NC rural areas is even more disturbing, with the rate at 45% higher than in urban areas. Moreover, the rural child poverty rate is increasing with over 30% of our state’s rural children living in poverty. The percentages are even higher for children of color.
A shameful fact about our state is thatNorth Carolina makes the top ten list for extreme child poverty. Approximately, 200,000 of North Carolina’s rural children live in poverty.
“It’s just can’t go on like this.”

Is this quote right?
19%? Seems like it might should be 91%.
Either that or I'm losing my brain on this WoW day.
Maybe it's 19% and 8%
Either way....I get the point....the income of the very wealthy is going up at a faster rate than the income of the workers who labor to provide the wealthy their big fat profits.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

That's right.
19 and 8
I had to listen a couple of times, but that's right.
It's also insane. No wonder we're at the brink of such domestic chaos.
Thanks!
I have a pretty good ear for the Southern drawl, having lived in the South most of my life, but admittedly, on a video with not the best audio coupled with my hearing loss...things may get lost in the translation.

Oh ho, good catch SD

Not sure
I can fact check it later.
It was really chaotic in the media building and spin room after the debate, so,it's possible a number got mixed up.
But, his point still stands, the disparity is outrageous and it is increasing.
If you listen carefully, he says 8%.
It's 19% and 8%.
Ok, thanks everyone!
Now let me see if I can edit without blowing out the whole post. ;)
Great Video, Amy
There are so many forces behind the rising poverty in this state. I have high hopes for what will happen when John Edwards is elected.
This ties in with what I wrote yesterday about the state earned income tax credity. A program that rewards workers with moderate to low income doesn't appeal to Republicans. One proposed giving the working poor the tax credit, but taking almost all of it and giving it to middle income and wealthy families. This has to change.

EITC
EITC is critical for the working poor. Sadly, many families who do qualify, don't file for it too. It needs to be made simplier and expanded.
Thanks!
I was a bit rushed this am with the post, so, apologize for any errors.
I know you're working hard
I really appreciate you getting this posted for us.

Look at that map, Moore County is the White "V" Shaped one
it's surrounded by the NC08 district that Hayes has put in this poverty position by voting FOR CAFTA! '08 can't come soon enough for Larry Kissell and the good people now suffering under the Non-leadership that is Robing Hayes

Isn't that something?
I think the point you make, highlights Mudcat's ideas that we can reach rural voters on economic issues. They are suffering terribly under Republican policies as you illustrate.
Another reason Kissell will WIN in 08!
Look at the high poverty area in northeastern NC
Hmmmmmm....now where did the Navy choose to pick on family farmers to seize their land?

Great article and vid NCDem

Thanks.

Great video!
Love the video, especially his comments about John Edwards. I guess he knows about Edwards' rural recovery plan.
Love the end of the vid

LOL!
I loved that line too..."if you're greedy..." watch out!
Let's hope rural voters have had enough of greedy pro corporate Republicans.
I think there is a lot of fertile ground out there in rural areas, for Democrats.
And greed is the operative word
I was bemoaning the closure of all of the furniure manufacturing plants here in High Point. It is incredibly sad to me to see this fine craftsmanship honed over a century or more laid to waste. And all because of corporate greed.
I even pleaded with my friend who was the head designer and buyer for Rose Furniture (now closed) for 18 yrs to rack her brain, to tap her vast network of contacts for someone who would take up the challange of gathering the people with the skills and know how and start an employee owned and run company like they did in Argentina recovered factory
She couldn't think of anyone. Of course she's an R, so it probably sounded a bit out there. On reflection I realize it is, of course, actually a socialist plot to bypass these capitalist pigs.
It really is
Greed is the driving force behind most of the conservative social and economic policies. That's why we see the rich get richer and the poverty rate increase, under Republican administrations.
And the irony of it all! The Republicans "own" so called Christian and Family values? pffft...
Great work
Talk about middle America.
I am still wondering why we are importing Wheat/wheat products from China.
I grew up in Minnesota, Corn fields and Wheat and dairy. This country used to lead the world in Agriculture and exports were wheat and corn. Then the govt came along with the programs to pay farmers not to farm.
I want made in America back, with cotten products grown in US southern states, I want grown in the USA back. Last summer I made a quick run to a Walmart and stopped by the produce - they had Oranges with little, very small oval lables - import from africa. I live in TN - what happened to the organes in Florida?
Where is America? The America - I grew up in?
Exactly!
I remember when we were happy to purchase a product that proudly stated "Made in the U.S.A." on it. I still look for those labels, but dang, they're hard to find.
I agree: there isn't a thing on earth that anyone can do better/cheaper/faster and with higher quality than we can do for ourselves.
Sam Walton prided himself on buying American. His greedy pug offspring have run scores of American companies out of business, stolen their designs and had cheapass knockoffs made in China.
Communist frickin' Red China, the holder of 40% of our debt. Even Sam is whirling in his grave, I'm sure of it.
And WallyWorld is just one of the anti-American companies to which, by dint of huge "campaign contributions" in return for favorable legislation, have allowed our technology, our jobs and our money to be carted offshore where we'll see none of them ever again. Unless we take our country and government back, NOW and by every peaceful means, the way of life we knew for over 200 years will only be a sad footnote in history; a story of how we let something beautiful and great slip away as if it were nothing.

Agree and this is where Unions come in
As we know, supporting Unions is an important part of promoting American made products as well as protecting workers' rights.
Hopefully, union strength will increase esp, here in the South.
As a native son of FL
I refuse to by citrus of any kind that I am not certain is from FL. Unfortunatly this means that I don't get as much citrus as I should, or want.
When it comes to juice, I recomend Florida's Natural. Not only is it only 100% FL juice (I juat can't get my self to drink CA juice!) it is also a co-op, meaning that the farmers get a better cut. It is also not from concentrate, making the juice taste better.
For those of you who do the organic thing, Organic Valley juice is also 100% FL juice, and they too are a co-op.
FL's Natural also does grapefruit and other citrus juice cocktails etc.
Just my suggestions for helping FL farmers and getting some damn good juice in the process.

I should add,
The orange lables at walmart - were green, so if you look and see little small ovals and they are green check to see if they are from Africa, of course you may need a magnifying glass or something, I had to get out my reading glasses.
Just watch for green lables.
Part of the Greedy Old Party Plot is to deamonize that line too
I have started pushing back when I hear the line about Americans not the best anymore. They ARE the best and STILL would be the best if given the opportunity. Corporate America would rather keep products cheap and forget the old addage, "You get what you pay for!"

And I'm tired of being told...
Americans have to get retrained, they're not cutting edge like Asians are in science and math. Well what are we training for? If all the jobs have left us because the allmighty dollar reigns, what the f%@k?
We've done the retraining and there's no place to put it to use.
Well, that's a bit of an over-the-top
dissemblance, that Americans have to be "re"-trained. I graduated high school in 1975 and it was about that time when schools stopped teaching English to the younger grades. We'd made it to the moon, so there was no need for a push in higher maths.
I see a couple of generations of kids behind me who can barely spell, who can neither construct nor deconstruct a complete sentence, can barely make change and have no notion of civics or history. We can't conceive of "re"-training until we've taken up "training" again. When people are educated, they have the means and will to excel. When people are educated, they have more opportunities and employment choices besides burger manufacturer or greeter at The Company Store. When people have more opportunity, crime goes down. We simply cannot expect a successful society when our Republic-ravaged school system is passing functional illiterates and mathematical mo-rawns from grade to grade. (If I hear one more newscaster [who should know better] split another infinitive, I swan I'll hurl a shoe through the tube. GAH! That's a pet peeve of mine.)
Senator Edwards has it exactly right. Increase opportunity and everyone benefits -- not just the top 1%.

Education starts at home
I'll get pounced on for promoting "family values," but I'll do it anyway. The percentage of births out of wedlock has skyrocketed in the last 40 years. The overwhelming majority of Black children are born out of wedlock.
If educational success starts at home and if much of the preparation for children's educational success can be as simple as reading to them a few minutes each night, how can we separate changes in family structure from the decline in educational achievement? Just reading to a child a few minutes a night gives them a greatly higher chance of doing well once they enter school. Having two parents makes it more likely there will be a more stable and healthy environment for children, especially in the important early years.
Our schools can certainly get better, but some of our efforts and money need to be put towards encouraging parents to be parents. Schools, no matter how much funding or how well run, do not factor into early childhood development.
No pouncing re: family values
But what do you do when the parents themselves can't read? Or when they're working two or three jobs and the person putting a small child to bed at night is a 10 year old sister?
We're in a downward spiral here. I don't have the answer . . . but wishful thinking isn't it.
Maybe we need a birth tax.
Bit more wishful thinking...
I wish parents had to get as much training at least as it takes to drive a car and get a license. Even an illiterate parent who knows how to give appropriate respect and discipline to a child is putting down some important groundwork.
Wait till you hear what our Social Services are doing
I'll be writting an article on them in the future. Very hopeful!

Wait a minute
We already have one.
And you're paying it.
Social Security
Kind of like how my parents' and grandparents' generations have ensured there will be no money in Social Security once I get to be 107 (or whatever they raise the benefit age to). I am going forward as a thirty-something with no plans of getting any benefits by the time I get old.
Single mothers
No doubt we need more sex edu and better access to birth control. My 13 year old daughter came home from school one day and said, "we had a sex education class today in health and mom, not once did they mention birth control pills, condoms or AIDS."
"Is our children learning?"
Another issue that should be addressed is that there are unintended consequences created by many social programs that discourage women from getting married. These need to be removed so that women can still receive some support with day care, housing or whatever and not be penalized for having the income of a father/husband in the household.
