I'll have one electric car please!

Chevy Volt
I found a reason today for our local republican GM car dealer (Ben Mynatt) to get a bunch of money out of me.
Several news sources today announced what i think a lot of people are waiting for: the rebirth of the electric car.

Some big honcho at GM must have watched the excellent documentary "who killed the electric car" (if you haven't seen it yet, go rent it), because General Motors Corp. today unveiled the Chevrolet Volt sedan concept at the North American International Auto Show.

The Volt has a battery-powered electric motor that can run the car for up to 40 city miles on a single charge. This is more than enough for the average commuter because 78 percent of daily commuters travel 40 miles or less. About half of U.S. households travel less than 30 miles per day.

Beyond that, a gasoline-powered three-cylinder engine can generate electricity to power the car and replenish the battery, with a range of up to 640 miles, GM said.

The car can be recharged by plugging it in to a household 110-volt outlet for about six hours, and the gasoline engine can get about 50 miles per gallon when producing electricity to run the car, GM said. The turbocharged engine also can run on E85 ethanol. This is no "girlie" car either: GM officials estimated a top speed of 100 to 120 mph for the Volt, which can carry up to five passengers.
You could call the Volt a "plug-in hybrid" that runs on nothing but electricity for the first 40 miles and then turns into a hybrid like we already have on the roads these days (e.g. Toyota Prius).

This might be the car that saves the GM company from dying out after a decade of refusing to invest in environmentally friendly cars and instead aiming to sell mainly gas guzzling SUV's (e.g. the Hummer) and big trucks to machos with a tiny wiener.
Hummer
One of those machos lives in my neighborhood and thinks he needs a H2 Hummer to drive just one person to work in Charlotte everyday at less than 10 mpg. Since I'm a pacifist I am not going to say he deserves to be shot, but he needs at least a swift kick in the nachos. For guys like that there's the good alternative of joining the army and driving vehicles like this.

The result? GM lost $1.3 billion during the first quarter and a whopping $10.6 billion in 2005 as a whole.
At the same time sane people flocked to companies like Toyota to buy a Prius, thereby making Toyota the biggest car company in the world now. I guess somebody at GM finally got the message and decided to invest money in the electric car once more.

The bad news is that the Chevy Volt is a concept car and it won't be commercially available until 2010 or 2012. The folks at GM seem to have the marketing figured out (you can visit the fancy Volt website here), now hurry up and make the damn thing already.

Then all we need in this country is an administration that pumps money into research on how to produce more electricity through alternative environmentally friendly resources, instead of giving huge tax breaks to oil companies, so we don't have to produce it through very polluting coal plants like the "cliffside" ones Duke energy is planning to build.

Electric

What does an electric car do to your electric bill? Does anyone have one?

PE gets enough of my money; can you plug those cars into solar panels? :)

Watched that video at the "Green Sun Power" ad above

Ed Begley said they could plug into solar.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

savings

I'm sure that it will bring your electricity bill up a bit, but not that much. GM estimated that using the electric power could save that consumer about $900 a year based on gas prices of about $2.40 per gallon.
It's gonna be hard to find somebody that has an electric car. The last mass produced electric car was the EV1 also by GM. They pulled it off the road after several years and destroyed all vehicles. If you want to know more about this watch the "who killed the electric car" documentary.

Wow

that's a nice looking vehicle. Does it come in the "mom" size?

:)

I was just going to write how much I hate the stealth bomber design of this car.

Vive la difference!

Yeah......

not a look that appeals to old hippies, eh? It needs more headroom and it does kinda have a tank look to it. It's just much sexier than its predecessors.

I would

Drive the he$$ out of that car. Which means I shouldnt buy it cause I would get a lot of speeding tickets.

However, I would like to be the first person to get a speeding ticket in an electric car. A big middle finger to the media and the auto industry.

"Keep the Faith"

Forget that, I want the Tesla.

Key facts:

  1. 100% electric.
  2. 0-60 in 4 seconds.
  3. 135 mpg equivalent.
  4. 250 miles per charge.
  5. 1 cent per mile.

While the stats are better

it looks like a bug and you aren't fitting any car seats in that baby. I need the Mom size. Have you seen the backpacks kids carry these days? Then you have the soccer duffle, the load that was supposed to be dropped off at Goodwill two days ago, groceries, huge bag of dog food....Trust me....I need cargo space. We bought a couple of years before the hybrid was released and I haven't looked to see how that is doing. I love my little wannabe SUV. I have great cargo space without paying for the gas guzzling.

None of them are real for me

If you don't need a new car....it doesn't matter what is out on the market. If you need space for a family it looks like (from the picture) you will need two Tesla's to one Volt. I need one Volt with headroom and cargo space. They aren't even close to my dream electric car. Oh well......

Tesla my a$$... LOL

Tesla? the freaking thing costs $92.000 and only has 2 seats.
Furthermore, I haven't seen a tesla dealer in my area where I can bring the car if there's anything wrong with it.
Even if I wanted to I couldn't buy one anyway..the 2007 model is already sold out.
I'd like to see real solutions for mainstream America, not some mirage i will only be able to buy if I ever win the lottery (which is going to be hard since I never buy a ticket).

If I slap a cord on my Highlander

and plug it in....ya think it'll work?

It's depressing to think that all the new technology will be financially out of reach. Yes, I want to do what's right for the environment, but it has to be right for our wallets as well. About the only green thing I can afford to do is recycle because that's just throwing mess out in a different container.

GM will have to do something...

I'm not a fan of GM by any means, give me a Prius anytime, but I'm pretty sure the Volt will materialize in a few years for the simple reason that GM has to develop something like this or they will no longer exist 10 years from now.
GM says the Volt will be very competitively priced, so I'm keeping My fingers crossed i'll be able to afford one.

The best solution to the traffic congestion and massive pollution is great public transportation of course. The first 30 years of my life I lived in Europe and never needed a car, i didn't even have a drivers license until i moved to the USA. ahhhh nostalgia...

The Tesla Point.

Folks, let me ask you this. If you can create an electric sports car that goes from 0-60 in 4 seconds, can travel 250 miles on a charge, and gets 135 mpg, then what would happen if you put that technology into this:

Or, this.

I have often wondered what would happen if you took the 1985 Subaru that my parents had and made it out of lightweight materials available today and put an electric engine into it?

Well, the Tesla is a proof of concept that you can do incredible things with an electric car, we only lack the willpower.

We don't lack the will power

They lack the desire to make them and we lack the financial buying power to pay the prices they put on them.

$$$$

is all relative. I think if we all start making small changes like buying compact fluorescent bulbs, like signign up for NC Green Power, and buying a hybrid when it is time for the next vehicle, will show that we are serious about new low-energy technologies, which will in turn lead to more of said low-energy technologies.

What a great run-on sentence.

We've done the bulbs

It was kinda funny......we were going to use them as the bulbs burned out and that doesn't happen that often. Three down in the first week. Very odd. I need to get the smaller size for a few of our lamps. The only thing I'm missing is the vehicle.

We're designing the new house with as many green touches as we can, but I still can't convince the man to go with solar. I will not give up, though.

An easier way...

I saw that in Florida you can panels on your roof and run them through your power meter. During the day, if you aren't using much electricity and they are generating power, it turns your meter backwards.
That should sell any red-blooded american male.
