A Call For Help

Hello fellow BlueNCers,

I hope I am not out of line here. This is not an advertisement per se, but more of a call for help.

My aunt and uncle are retired farmers in Alleghany. They are very big in the Democratic Party up there and worked their butts off for Roger Sharpe and several other Democratic candidates.

Anyway, they have fallen on hard times lately, and aside from their Social Security checks depend solely on selling Christmas trees for income. So if you haven't bought your tree yet, I would be deeply indebted if you would send your business their way.

More details below the fold

They grow Fraser Firs. 6-7 footers go for $21, and 7-8 footers are $25. You can pick one that is pre-cut and bailed, or walk up to the field and choose your own.

Again, if this was some kind of big, money-making farm I wouldn't ask. But these are just a couple of retired farmers (and good Democrats) trying to make ends meet.

If interested, just call Pete or JoAnn at 336-359-8160, and tell them Darren sent you.

Thanks again so much for your time.

No worries.

I just wish I lived nearby! Those prices are pretty great.

Those prices are awesome

I don't know if we'll be able to make the trip, but I'll check with my husband.

Do they deliver to Raleigh?

We are stuck without a car that would be able to tow a tree back to Raleigh.

They don't deliver, but..

If there was a big enough order, I'd pick up some trees and get them that way. Not sure I could do home delivery, but if a dozen people or so in that area want trees, I could haul them on my truck to a meeting place? Maybe on a Saturday afternoon?

Would be no extra charge. That would just be my way of pitching in more.

Not to mention, a lot of people buy to re-sell. You could buy ten trees at $20 per, and re-sell them for $30 or more.

Just let me know and we can work something out.

good luck

i dont buy trees, the whole being another religion thing is a rather important detail. However, i wish them luck. The true point of a community is things like this.

"Keep the Faith"

I feel ya, Blue

I'm in the same boat. Of course, we do candles and trees (my wife can't resist the decorations).

All it is for me is a way to help out folks in need, and it doesn't hurt that the people in need here support the BlueNC cause at personal cost to themselves.

By the way, even though nobody has even alluded to this at all, but for full disclosure I get zero financially from this. If we schedule a delivery thing, I will pick up from Alleghany and deliver with my own gas money.

Every dime goes to JoAnn and Pete.

Thanks again to everyone for their interest.

crowbar

I'd be interested in taking a road trip to get a tree. I haven't gotten one yet, and I'd love it if my money were going to good farmer Democrats. :)

I'm gonna give them a ring. Thanks for the tip!!

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

earlier next year crowbar.

I think I could get some local interest in renting a U-haul and delivering Christmas trees to people who can't afford one, or to local businesses or something.

We always buy ours the day after Thanksgiving.

Um....wouldn't it be a great way for us to raise money

We could raise money for political candidates or BlueNC or a charity or split it between all of the above.

mind churning....

okay, we start a BlueNC monthly Pizza for Progressives where we ask folks to stay home one night and eat frozen pizza and drink water, then give the extra $20 to Larry Kissell.

churning, churning

then we plan for next year to do "Pines for Progressives" using crowbar's family we sell Christmas trees through the local party to Dems. I paid $60 for my tree and that was cheap around here. I'll bet in Orange alone we could sell a hundred to local dem activists. $50-$60 per tree with $25 (can't remember exact figure) going to farm and $25 going to Larry and rest to gas and truck? $25 x 100 is $2500. Not much, but a start.

re- Pines for Progressives

RobertP,

Just spoke with JoAnn, and she said if you want to do that next year, they will also be willing to help instruct on the set-up, etc of a tree lot and in any other way possible.

They told me to pass along that you can go ahead and call now or whenever you get time to discuss the whole thing.

For them, it's doubly great. Aside from the extra income, it's a way to let them help the Dem Party more.

The number again is 336-359-8160, and they are usually up from early in the morning until 10pm or so.

Thanks again to you and everyone else for the interest.

I know a few people in Weaverville

is that close? I'll send them an email, these are great prices and a good cause!

Weaverville

is a few hours away. But it is a great cause, a scenic drive, and is worth the money even more if you buy several.

For instance, if trees are going for $50 there, a person could pool up for their family, friends, etc. To pay for the drive, just get 5 or 6 people to order a tree, charge $30 per, and you make $5 per tree or more. That pays for your trip, saves the buyers $20 or more, and you might even come out good enough to get yours free!

Thanks again,

Darren

Off Topic but have a big favor to ask

would each of you give me your mailing address? I'd like to add you to my Christmas card list. Please just leave it in my email box....Friends are the family you choose!
