I had the opportunity tonight to hear Beverly Perdue talk again about her vision for North Carolina. Speaking to a house filled with environmental activists, she articulated a strong agenda for making our state a leader in renewable energy, conservation, environmental literacy, and green economic development (my words, not hers). She was knowledgeable, articulate and clear about what she wants to accomplish, and I'm convinced she has what it takes to make the difference we need.
If things continue the way they're going, Perdue will face Richard Moore in the Democratic primary for governor in May, 2008. Though I haven't met Moore, I am close friends with many people who work with and for him. To a person, they think he's great and that he would make a fantastic governor. I don't doubt their confidence one bit.
Which brings me to the point of this entry: What would it take to convince one of these good people to run for the US Senate against Elizabeth Dole in 2008?
Seriously, what kind of sense does it make to have two of our top Democratic leaders slugging it out for Governor, spending all that money to win a primary, while the Queen of Incompetence gets a free pass to re-election in the Senate? It makes no sense at all.
For reasons I'm not sure I can fully articulate, I think Moore is a stronger candidate for Senate than Perdue, and that Perdue is a stronger candidate for governor than Moore. Maybe it's because I don't know him as well, but his experience as Treasurer would seem particularly invaluable in a Congress that will inherit budget deficits extending as far as the eye can see and beyond.
The main reason I can think of that Moore would prefer being a governor than a US Senator is if he has presidential aspirations. Conventional wisdom says it's hard to run for president from the US Senate, and I believe that conventional wisdom is mostly right. That said, I still think he could be our best shot at dumping Dole in 2008.

PS I've had many discussions with knowledgeable people in recent weeks about the future of Elizabeth Dole. Some say she's looking tired and may not be all that enthusiastic about running again. Others say she'll try to keep her job only if the Senate doesn't flip to Democratic control this year. Still others say she'll never give up, no matter what. But all three schools of thought share one common opinion: We at BlueNC should be relentless in pointing out her incompetence, her lack of interest in North Carolina, and her mindless rubber-stamping for the Bush administration. So keep that in mind on November 8th. We won't have UpChuck Taylor and Flipper Hayes to kick around anymore. But we will have Elizabeth Dole.

Environmental issues
For whatever reason, environmental issues have gotten short shrift around here. Maybe it's because we're all already on the green bandwagon, or perhaps the tension of tight campaigns has grabbed so much attention that not much else matters.
If you're knowledgeable about green initiatives taking root in North Carolina, I hope you'll consider becoming a regular at BlueNC. We all need to be educated about what's happening and what's possible.

After being down East 3 times this past week. The Onslow and Cartert Democrats are on fire big time and taking no Republican prisoners. They have got their act together and making big inroads into the Republicans base and the undecided. Do not be shocked to a see sweep of Democrats taking Cartert county. When I ask what they thought about the Bev and Moore. The answer was simple. She needs to run against Walter Jones Jr.and take him out for good. As to Moore, the other answer was that he needs to be here and raising bucks for us.
Best fighting down to earth smart democrats I have seen yet.
Nice idea
But I go for Richard Moore for governor. I particularly like the idea of keeping a woman in the old white boys' senatorial club.
My main problem with the lieutenant governor is why does she like Chuckie Taylor so much?

I could go that way, too.
I just hate to see them going at it while Dull sits by and watches.
I'm not aware of Perdue's enthusiasm for UpChuck, but I suppose anything is possible in the rarified world of the political glitterati.
I'm for Brad Miller taking Biddy's Seat
He has worked tirelessly for the working man and has a very good record. He would be a very strong candidate!

Looking forward to THAT one.

Who will replace them?
I am not sure which one should run for which office, but I do agree with the premise that one of them should run for Senate - assuming Mike Easley doesn't. We should run the strongest possible candidate against Dole. Now that she has a typical GOP voting record to shine a light on and answer for, she will not get the free pass that she got from many voters in 2002.
In the meantime, with Moore and Perdue both trying to move up, we need statewide candidates to run for their soon to be open seats. Plus we need candidates for the statewide ones the GOP already holds - Labor, Agriculture, and Auditor. Especially Labor, I guess because I hate seeing Cherrie Berry's face every time I get on an elevator. Has anyone heard of potential candidates for these offices?
One person who I have heard is planning to run for Lt. Governor in 2008 is Pat Smathers, who is the mayor of Canton - a small town in Western NC that was decimated by hurricane-related flooding 2 years ago. Pat spoke to the Durham Co. Democratic Party Executive Committee last month. Pulling from his resume, he is the attorney for the Haywood County School Board and the Haywood County Community College, has served as the chair for Haywood County Democratic Party, and is a Lt. Colonel in the N.C. National Guard. He attended Duke as an undergrad and Wake Forest for law school.
Pat Smathers is wonderful
He wowed everyone out west at the 11th District Spring gala a few years ago. And he's got a lot of interesting innovative "bidness" ideas for the state.

I agree
He is a very personable fellow and has a lot of good ideas. He seemed particularly interested in improving access to - and addressing the escalating costs of - higher education. His National Guard / military background could be a big key to winning in the general election against whatever wingnut Art Pope comes up with.
No one I know think Easley's running
which means he probably is.
:)
It just seems fishy to me.
that no one would be discussing it. Perhaps Iron Mike thinks his current agenda would be filibustered if he started talking about running for Senate, whereas while he talks about going fishin' in 08, people don't fight him quite as hard?
If so, he would probably whisper quietly into the ears of his closest companions (Don't run, but don't say why).
Just a thought.

Good Point
It is odd that no Democrats seem to be talking about running in the Senate race in 2008. Maybe Mike has a plan in place already.
Any chance Liddy might just decide to retire instead of running again? Having the Dems retake the Senate next month might push her to that. She needs to spend some quality time with Viagra Bob.
other side
The real reasoning for Moore and Perdue is the other side. There is no strong Republican running for Governor. There are two wingnuts with questionable abilities to raise name id state-wide and a freaking nutjob wacko who is self funded but an idiot.
On the other hand, Dole is going to be very hard to beat, and I havent seen any polling, but I would be willing to bet that her favorable ratings are still very very high.

Dole's approval numbers: 58%
can be found here:

As of 9/18, she had a 58% approval / 32% disapproval rating, +/- 4%. That +26% net rating puts her at #32 among the 100 senators, a pretty damned safe place to be. For comparison, George Allen is at #74, Jim Talent is at #80, and DeWine, Santorum and Burns are 98-99-100. Of course, the difference could be having an opponent running ads against you.
Dole's lowest ratings since May 2005 came in May 2006, when she was at 50% approval / 42% disapproval.
On the plus side, Burr is at 44% approval / 40% disapproval and appears to be more vulnerable. This is surprising to me since he has been marginally better than Dole (Burr voted the right way on stem cell research funding) - not that it takes much to be better than Dole.
If not Moore or Perdue, who will challenge Liddy? Is there another political unknown with deep pockets out there like John Ewards was in 1988?
anyone know what Easley's thinkin'?
