Whalen ... fleas to Blue Dog heaven

In case you've been wondering why the North Carolina Democratic Party never got around to caring about progressives, this press release 'splains it all.

PS. I know how to spell flees, but I really couldn't resist scratchin' that semantic itch.

RALEIGH, NC – The North Carolina Democratic Party announced today that Executive Director Andrew Whalen will be leaving at the end of the year.

Whalen has been hired as the executive director of U.S. Representative Heath Shuler’s leadership political action committee, 3rd and Long, and will also serve as a senior adviser to the Congressman in his House office.

“Andrew has been a tremendous asset to the North Carolina Democratic Party. His work ethic, integrity, and political instincts are second to none,” said NCDP Chairman David Young. “This is an excellent opportunity to work on behalf of Democrats across the country, not just North Carolina. While the NCDP will miss his leadership, we wish him the very best in the future.”

“It has been an honor to serve the Democratic Party and Governor Perdue for the past two years,” Whalen said. “Traveling across the state, I have continually been impressed by the energy and determination of North Carolina Democrats and am grateful for the friends I have gained. While my job will be different, I look forward to continuing to work to strengthen our Party from Murphy to Manteo.”

As 3rd and Long’s executive director, Whalen will oversee all of the PAC’s fundraising and Shuler’s political activities including, candidate recruitment efforts, communications, and political travel.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue working in North Carolina, while also affecting the national political discourse and helping Democrats retake the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives by communicating the message of the Democratic Party to independent voters throughout the country,” Whalen continued.

Whalen previously served as Shuler’s deputy campaign manager in 2006, managed his re-election campaign in 2008, and served as his House office communications director. Prior to beginning his original service with Shuler, Whalen served as communications director and managed several campaigns at the state and federal level across the country.

Since being re-elected for his third term in the U.S. House, Shuler has taken on a larger national role within the Democratic Party. He is the Administration Co-Chair of the Blue Dog Coalition for the 112th Congress.

Talk about hopping from the frying pan into the fire. The Blue Dog Coalition in the US House of Representatives is about as useless as (fill in your blank).

3rd and long

is not really the ideal position to be in if you're trying to make progress up the field. Especially if you're below 50% on passes completed...

a 3rd and Long a Hail Mary and isn't a Hail Mary, a prayerful half-desperate, half-hopeful shot? Not sure I would go with this name but bye bye Andrew, it is always best to leave after a drummin'.

good news?

Here's hoping Whalen is able to do for Shuler's C Street PAC what he did for the NCDP.

Shuler's district

It will be a long time, if ever, to get a progressive to represent Shuler's current district but we need to work hard to try to fashion who will replace Whalen and other state Democratic Party people. That is a fight we don't need to lose.

I'm not so pessimistic

Axia Wilson, with virtually no money and no name recognition, got 38% of the primary vote in 2010 against Shuler.

I'm hopeful to see Patsy Keever make another run for the seat, or someone else emerge.

The measure of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. - FDR

The Chair can hire whomever they want for ED

Over the votes/objections of the rest of the board - which is what happened in 2009.

So we have to make sure that we elect the CORRECT person for state party chair. Someone who is committed to building the Party and committed to honoring the wishes of the delegates and SEC members who take the time to craft our resolutions and platform as the "message" our Party wants to send out.

Again I need to remind you of the POO

A full-time executive director shall be selected by the state chair with the approval of the state executive council to serve at the pleasure of the state chair. The performance of the executive director shall be subject to annual review by the state chair and the state executive council.

Who on the board objected in 2009? By that I mean opened their mouth and spoke out loud?

Several SEC members objected to whalen by opening their mouths but in the end let young hire him.

How do you know?

How do you know? Were you there. Do you have a copy of the minutes or is it just hearsay?

call a couple officers and david young

And ask them always an assumption on here that no one but a few people could possibly know anything.

I called them and asked and lnow what they told me. And it seemed to be no big secret. And frankly I was told the day it happened.
