Today, Senator Richard Burr once again stood with a partisan minority in voting to block unemployment benefits for thousands of jobless North Carolina workers. Fortunately, the measure reached the 60 votes necessary to overcome an attempted Republican filibuster, thanks to bipartisan support. The bill also included short-term funding for other important programs such as Medicare payments to doctors, COBRA health benefits, and flood insurance. Last month, Burr was one of only 19 Republicans to vote against the short term benefits extension, which had previously been held up for several days by Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky.
