Robinson, Sears, and the Hate-Mongering Elephant in the Room

One curious aspect of the Virginia Race was the election of Winsome Sears in the Lt Governor race in the state. Sears seems to be a doppleganger of NC's Mark Robinson.

While Sears previously served in Virginia's House of Delegates and is a military vet, while Robinson came from nowhere with only a YouTube channel to his credit, they both share some common qualities besides being both states's first Black Lieutenant Governors.

Arizona-style GOP "audit" clown show coming to NC

You've no doubt read about the bogus "audit" going on in Arizona to "find more votes" for Trump in a state he lost. It's basically performative politics that's really only designed to spread misinformation and mistrust of our election process (and roll in dollars for the unqualified firm conducting the audit).

The Daily Beast (via Raw Story, if you don't subscribe) has a piece this morning on GOP legislators from other states hanging out in Arizona to see how they can organize similar efforts in their own state, including states Trump won.

Did a GOP pollster and right-wing lobbying group add a new course in NC’s public schools?

Salon is out with a report this morning concerning a 2019 memo from Republican strategist Frank Luntz, The memo, called “The War on the Successful” was obtained by Salon and is coming to light now because of ProPublica’s recent reporting on the fact that the 25 wealthiest Americans paid little or no taxes from 2014 to 2018.

Apple in the Triangle and Social Justice - The same as it ever was

I’m a big Apple fan. I’ve bought into the company’s “walled garden” of devices, computers, and online services for several years. Sure, they’re a little more expensive, but they just work and are reliable. I’d rather spend my time work and using my computers and devices, rather than troubleshooting some weird little problem.

And, as a gay man, I applaud Apple for its long-standing workplace policies prohibiting LGBTQ discrimination.

You might think I’m excited about the big announcement that Apple is setting up shop and bringing 3,000 jobs to the Triangle.

I’m underwhelmed.

Mark Robinson's Carolina Teachers Alliance - A Closer Look

I did a “deep dive” into some Google searching this morning to find out more about the Board of Directors of Mark Robinson’s new Carolina Teachers Alliance. To be an organization for educators, it seems to mostly consist of folks who are conservative activists.

Here’s a rundown of what I found - others could likely figure out more, particularly with their connections to other “dark money” conservative and evangelical groups around the state.

Reflecting on NC Election 2020: It’s the Racism, Stupid

As President-elect Biden prepares for a transition to a sane Presidency, despite the lack of cooperation from the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and his creepy band of d-list lawyers, we in North Carolina are reflecting on Election 2020 and basically saying, “What the f**k did I just watch?”

The pundits on tv and at leading newspapers are wringing their hands over down-ballot races that went well for Republicans, wondering of the Democrats were too “far left” or if liberals didn’t spend enough time trying to “reach out” to those they disagree with.

But let’s get real here. Just what was this election all about?

You can waste time looking at campaign platforms, pressers with candidates, and those useless little voter guides that the BOE puts out for judges that tell you about the candidates in very polite terms. What NC voters respond to is news coverage and advertising. And that’s where the results of this election are very telling.

How Mitch McConnell Could Lose GOP State Races for Decades to Come

While we mourn the passing of the remarkable and accomplished Ruth Bader Ginsberg, we - and the GOP - have to face some political realities about an opening on the Supreme Court. Mitch McConnell announced his intention to push through a Trump SCOTUS nominee barely an hour after Ginsberg death hit the news, slapping everyone in the face with the callousness that the GOP has become.

But, Mitch, you should be careful what you ask for.

Historic SCOTUS ruling: LGBT employment discrimination illegal

The Supreme Court has ruled this morning that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation violates the Civil Rights Act.

The decision said Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which makes it illegal for employers to discriminate because of a person’s sex, among other factors, also covers sexual orientation. It upheld rulings from lower courts that said sexual orientation discrimination was a form of sex discrimination.
