Tillis has a meltdown

The NC House and Senate were expected to adjourn today.

But that was before Thom Tillis decided to throw a big wrench in the works -- and his GOP colleagues revolted!

The House rejected the [business incentives] bill earlier this month, but now the proposal is tied to an unrelated measure aimed at sparing teacher assistant jobs. Many districts have said that, despite legislative promises, the state budget will force them to cut teaching assistant positions.

Tillis linked a third bill on Friday, a measure that would give Wake County the option to hold a referendum in 2016 on a .25 percent sales tax increase.

The maneuvering uses one piece of legislation to undo provisions in the incentives bill, which otherwise would kill Wake County’s option to levy a quarter-cent sales tax to raise teacher salaries.

The new SBI

One of the many non-budget items added to the "budget update" during the short session was to move the State Bureau of Investigation from the Department of Justice, overseen by the elected Attorney General, to the Department of Public Safety, overseen by someone appointed by the Governor.

To be sure, this had nothing to do with the budget; it has to do with petty politics, namely, punishing the current Attorney General, Roy Cooper.

[State senator and former deputy AG Josh] Stein said the move doesn't save any money and no one at either agency asked for it. Police chiefs and sheriffs don't like it, either, he said.

This is a bad idea for lots of reasons, notably the very real potential for conflict of interest (anyone remember Watergate?) and opportunities to conveniently overlook wrongdoing in the governor's administration.

Latino groups call out Pat's lies

As already noted by BlueNC, Pat's rant about immigrant children in North Carolina is the result of spite, ignorance and shameless self promotion.

Now, others are pointing out Pat's lies.

Angeline Echeverria, executive director of El Pueblo, a nonprofit advocacy group for Latinos in the Triangle, said the governor never bothered to contact El Pueblo or any other organization working with the refugee children. All of the groups have the information he said his administration lacks.

"He seems to be spending a lot of energy raising fears, raising concerns about the unaccompanied minors, about the children who are fleeing violence," Echeverria said at a news conference. "We are very concerned about his setting a tone that is unwelcoming, a tone that is generating fear and mistrust."

Coal ash Thom

Thom "No Ethics Here!" Tillis continues his penchant for taking dirty money for his political campaign. Thom doesn't care if the money comes from racketeers, usurers or, most recently, environment destroying profiteers.

Money from coal companies has been fueling Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis’ race to unseat U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, including $21,100 from the nation’s largest privately owned coal company.

Hey, it's just a coal company. It's not like Tillis will be indebted to them. They're not one of his top contributors, after all. What? This just in:

Murray Energy is Tillis’ fifth-largest contributor. He has received money from the owner, company officers, employees and family members, and the company’s political action committee, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog group.

That Constitution thing

What if Connecticut passed a law that said that anyone who wished to sell guns had to attain NRA "high master" marksmanship rating for every kind of gun they sell and maintain that rating for 5 years? What if that caused all the gun stores to close up shop? What if the legislators defended this hypothetical law by saying, "Hey, we're not banning guns! Just keeping people safe!"

Well, of course, people of many persuasions would be up in arms (so to speak). The gun nuts would be frothing at the mouth. Because that would be a blatant attempt to do an end run around the Constitution and impose a stupid requirement on gun sellers that's unrelated to their vocation of selling guns, with a clear goal of putting gun stores out of business in Connecticut.

N&O kisses up to Tillisberger

I couldn't believe my eyes -- but there it was, a great big Koch brothers AFP advertisement for the NC GOP, right there in the Raleigh News & Observer. On the front page even! "Kinder, gentler Republican legislators!" screamed the headline.

I knew that the newspaper business was going downhill, but I couldn't believe that they were so desperate for advertising dollars that they would lead their Sunday edition with such propaganda.

And then -- then the stark truth hit me. This piece of fiction was billed as a news story! Written by real N&O reporters and everything! As the NCGA leaves town with the earth scorched just as much as ever, the N&O asked:

Is this the kinder, gentler Republican legislature?

(Answer, hell no!). Thom Tillis must be thrilled that the N&O prominently featured his lie of the year:

University education is only for rich kids

The North Carolina Constitution states:

The General Assembly shall provide that the benefits of The University of North Carolina and other public institutions of higher education, as far as practicable, be extended to the people of the State free of expense.

Well, now that the Republicans control the UNC Board of Governors, they're paying about as much heed to the NC Constitution and the Tillisberger does. They've decided that our universities shouldn't be giving so much tuition money to students who really need financial aid.

Public universities will be limited in their ability to use tuition revenue to cover costs for financially needy students under a new policy adopted Friday by the UNC Board of Governors.

BlueNC acronym dictionary

It was rightly pointed out that many of us here at BlueNC slip into the use of acronyms we've all grown to know and love. Here's a starter list (ones I found on BlueNC or otherwise thought of); others are encouraged to add to it and/or post acronyms or other terminology you've been wondering about yourself. I'll edit this entry from time to time.

  • ABC = Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (don't know why it's not ABCC)
  • AFP = Americans for Pisspoority Prosperity (an evil Koch-funded organization out to destroy America and making much headway in doing so; their North Carolina chapter is working to destroy our state)

On Tillis's coattails: Jason Saine wins ALEC award

For the second time in three years, North Carolina has the dishonor of having one of its own legislators recognized as the ALEC legislator of the year.

The American Legislative Exchange Council has named state Rep. Jason Saine its Lawmaker of the Year for 2014.

It's the second time in four years a North Carolina lawmaker has won the group's highest honor. Outgoing House Speaker Thom Tillis was ALEC's Lawmaker of the Year in 2011.

Racism & cronyism, Duplin style

Sometimes the illegal cronyism is so blatant that even Kim Strach has to call foul.

In an unusual move, the executive director of the State Board of Elections is refusing to confirm the appointment of a new director at the Duplin County Board of Elections, citing concerns over the way the candidate was chosen by the local board, which includes two Republicans and a Democrat.

The Duplin County board appointed a pickle factory worker with no elections oversight experience and argued to the SBOE that he was the most qualified individual. So Kim asked for the documentation demonstrating that he was the most qualified individual. The Duplin County board declined to provide that documentation.
