UPDATED: One of Two Biden Videos Picked Up by the Official Campaign!

Let me tell you about the speech that floored me.

My plan is - and it may not be the surest way to win - but my plan is to campaign in a lot of red states ... I may not be able to win a general election in South Carolina here and maybe no Democrat can, it's a tough road right now as you rebuild this party. But guess what - if we only get 30 percent of the vote, you can't govern. I gotta be able to get 45 47 48 49 percent of the vote in this state as the Democratic nominee so that you can begin to rebuild the Democratic Party. You gotta be able to do that in Nebraska. You gotta be able to do that in Kansas. You gotta be able to do that across the country. - Senator Joe Biden

I couldn't have said it better. Here's my video of that speech (sorry, it's long):

Larry Kissell needs 330. We need 443.

A week ago, I became the acting president of the Mecklenburg County Young Democrats, and I'm running to keep my post when we have our elections meeting on May 6 (3:30-5:30 at the Independence Library Branch). And all of that seemed well and good until our new party chair, David Erdman, told me that when he was the president of the MCYD (back in 1980), he had 442 dues paying members (including a certain Arkansas Governor). I was blown away, since all of the MCYD incarnations I've known were much smaller. Still, I want to beat that number, even though our official membership rolls currently show 3 dues-paying members.

UPDATED: Action was Needed on Same Day Voter Registration

Thanks to everybody who called or e-mailed, both at BlueNC and on my e-mail list. Jerry has affirmed his position in favor of H91/S195, so the crisis has been averted. They got the message due in no small part to your lobbying, and it's a good bet that S195 will pass now that the NCDP is behind it again. This is a major legislative victory for the NCYD, and YDs across the state, including the new leadership that will be sworn in at JJ, thank you for your efforts.

So where do we go from here?

Open Thread: VT Edition

From my President, the West Wing's President Bartlet:
"'Joy cometh in the morning,' scripture tells us. I hope so. I don't know if life would be worth living if it didn't ... and I don't know what they want. All I know for sure, all I know for certain, is that they weren't born wanting to do this. There's evil in the world, there'll always be, and we can't do anything about that. But there's violence in our schools, too much mayhem in our culture, and we can do something about that. There's not enough character, discipline, and depth in our classrooms; there aren't enough teachers in our classrooms. There isn't nearly enough, not nearly enough, not nearly enough money in our classrooms, and we can do something about that. We're not doing nearly enough, not nearly enough to teach our children well, and we can do better, and we must do better, and we will do better, and we will start this moment today! They weren't born wanting to do this."

Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragedy. Almost everyone my age in the Southeast has a friend of a friend who was there on Monday ... as evidenced by all all the black ribbons on facebook.

Let's Get a Progressive Blogger in the U.S. Senate

Crossposted at Kos -Sam.

It's simple, really. We need a proven perspicacious progressive in the United States Senate to talk for Kossacks and, more importantly, Americans. We need United States Representative and fellow Kossack Brad Miller in the United States Senate. And all weekend, Blue South and I have been asking for the small amount of $5.08 to make it happen. If you help make it happen, I swear this will be the last Draft Brad diary for a long time.

You'll Never Guess what I Got Lassoed Into Tonight ...

I know people were expecting a Draft Brad post from me tonight, but I was off being elected temporary chair of the Young Democrats of Mecklenburg County. Let’s say 6 am on that one, ok?

Anyway, I had a great time at our first MCYD meeting of the year, hosted in beautiful HD-100 by State Representative Tricia Cotham. Zack Hawkins (President-Elect, YDNC) and Melissa Price (VP-Elect, YDNC) came down from Wake County to help with the meeting, and 5 colleges in Mecklenburg County (Davidson, Queens, CPCC, UNCC, and Smith) were represented. We’re putting together an organization that’s going to get Dems elected across the county.

573 Days until Election '08

Give love at Kos.

In 573 days ...

we will have another victory against the machine that called Max Cleland a coward

we will make a Democrat a "President-Elect" and our current lame duck a little lamer

we will defeat a man, a former textile mill owner, who betrayed his district by changing his vote on CAFTA at the last second

we will defeat the campaign that made a mockery of Paul Wellstone's funeral

we will put the last nail in the coffin of the neocons.

News from my ActBlue picks:

Larry Kissell

The campaign that never quit is going back to full-swing mode. Larry will be going around to the counties in the 8th district as they have their Democratic Party conventions - including the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party's convention on April 21.

What's with the Coverage of the Edwards Campaign?

Please help out on Kos. -Sam

Right now, I'm involved in a pretty intense research project that has me reading 50-100 articles about presidential candidates every day (I won't say this on Kos, but you BlueNCers know that it's for my major paper at Davidson). In my hundreds of Lexis Nexis searches for articles about the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary, I've come across an interesting trend in the coverage of the Edwards Campaign that will certainly be disturbing to many of the Edwards supporters on the site - by and large, the coverage has absolutely nothing to do with the campaign!

Obviously part of this is due to Elizabeth's announcement last month, which dominated an end-of-week news cycle, a Sunday news cycle, and a Monday news cycle (due to the 60 Minutes interview). But check out this wire story, picked up in today's Charlotte Observer and other NC news outlets:

RALEIGH, N.C. - Elizabeth Edwards says she is scared of the "rabid, rabid Republican" who owns property across the street from her Orange County home - and she doesn't want her kids going near the gun-toting neighbor.
