Soutern Strategy

To all NC progressives:

This is a marvelous opportunity for NC progressives to have a place at this
across-the-South table: the table developing the progressive Southern
Strategy. It will be laid out at the fully bottom-up, totally grassroots
Progressive Southern Strategy Alliance's conference at the Franklin Delano
Roosevelt Institute, Warm Springs GA, September 10-12.

Set your DVR for this documentary

Ribbon of Sand will air on WUNC July 7th at 3:30 am. If you love the beaches and islands of NC you won't want to miss this beautifully filmed, narrated and scored natural history documentary produced by award-winning filmmaker John Grabowska (Crown of the Continent, Remembered Earth). The Washington Post calls the film "poetic...both intimate and sweeping."

Did you know the Outer Banks include 60 miles of natural barrier islands with no roads and only wild ponies living on them? Or that the estuaries and the salt marshes on our coast are one of the most productive and rare ecosystems on Earth?

Here's what you can do:

Lyme disease and how doctors who treat it are treated

There is a new documentary film that will be released in June called UNDER OUR SKIN There is no treatment for a person like you.

A suspenseful tale of microbes, medicine & money UNDER OUR SKIN investigates the untold story of Lyme disease, an emerging epidemic with staggering ramifications. Each year thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, told that their symptoms are "all in their head." Following the stories of patients and physicians fighting the disease, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of our health care system and its inability to cope with a silent and growing terror, and of a medical establishment all too willing to put profits ahead of patients.

Sustainable Food in NC

A new program called Fork to Farm just held a Summit on sustainable food. Governor Bev Perdue pledged support. "I'm on your team. Tell me what you need to grow this whole new industry. . . . You are beginning to change the tide, directing the links between local agriculture and jobs and the economy. You all are red hot. Finally people across the state and the country are beginning to realize you are red hot."

Burr opens mouth again, inserts foot

Front page on kos today...

"Absolutely I'd do it [again]," Burr told WFAE, a public radio station in North Carolina. "The exact situation we were faced with was a freeze bank to bank. And as I stated, my attempt was to make sure my wife had enough cash at home to make it through the next week."

"It was not an attempt to run a bank," Burr said. "Nor was it a bank that was even considered then or now to be in trouble."

so...remind me again why she needed to get that cash?
