COTHAM, BURR ENCOURAGE PREREGISTRATION FOR YOUNG VOTERS
The Two Youngest Legislators in the House support a bill would provide preregistration for 16- and 17-year-old voters
RALEIGH, N.C. _ Rep. Tricia Cotham and Rep. Justin Burr, the two youngest members of the North -Carolina General Assembly, are sponsoring a bill that allow 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote and would require instruction on voter registration and preregistration in the social studies curriculum.
House Bill 1260 would also encourage local boards of education to adopt policies promoting student voter registration and preregistration.
“I think it is important to engage young people and encourage them to participate in their government,” Rep. Cotham said. “This makes it easier.”
Other sponsors of the bill are Rep. Angela Bryant and Rep. Pearl Burris-Floyd.
