88 Days: Liddy at the Watergate

DAY 88: Liddy at the Watergate

Elizabeth Dole didn’t become a Washington insider overnight, but she has perfected it over the years. 34 years ago today, Richard Nixon resigned the Presidency after it became clear he was involved with the men who broke into the Democratic Party Headquarters at the Watergate Hotel. But he’s not the only person famously connected to the Watergate. Liddy’s lived there for more than three decades, moving in when she married Bob Dole in 1975, and living there even now. Did you know she was a Democrat before she was a Dole? Her political expediency knows no bounds, even switching parties twice.

89 Days: Dole & Big Oil

Elizabeth Dole votes with George Bush 92% of the time. Here is one more reason why we need someone who votes with North Carolinians 100% of the time instead:

Day 89: Dole & Big Oil

While She Says One Thing To North Carolinians, Dole Does Another in Washington. She continues to talk the talk, but when votes are cast, she continually does Big Oil and Gas’ bidding at the expense of working families. Despite record profits, Dole has allowed Big Oil and Gas to keep $17 billion in tax incentives instead of investing in renewable energy.

RHETORIC:

Dole: “I have put forward a comprehensive energy plan that immediately addresses high gas prices and increases energy independence over the long term – and I promise to fight for its passage in the United States Senate.” [Dole Update Email, 8/6/08]

REALITY: DOLE VOTED TO GIVE TAX BREAKS TO OIL COMPANIES, AND THEN REFUSED TO TAKE THEM AWAY DESPITE RECORD PROFITS

90 Days: Dole runs away from her own Party, but to where? Not North Carolina.

DAY 90: Dole On the Run

Republican National Committee Chair Robert “Mike” Duncan is in state today, hosting a roundtable discussion with GOP leaders as part of their “Victory 2008 Tour.” Interestingly, it doesn’t look like Elizabeth Dole will be there, but that’s no surprise.

Dole has been running as fast as she can from her national party, and her 92% voting record with President Bush, choosing to skip the GOP Convention in St. Paul, citing her busy schedule in North Carolina during Congressional recess. Really?

When she came home from the U.S. Senate in March and May her events were mostly just private fundraisers to pad her campaign coffers, and in March, the Charlotte Observer noted, “Elizabeth Dole hasn't scheduled a single public stump speech in the past week - even though she has been on break from her work in Congress … Dole spent the past week of the Easter congressional recess raising money.”

91 Days: Nearly 500 Doors Knocked During 92 Days to Kay Canvass

Last night, supporters of Kay Hagan knocked on nearly 500 doors during the 92 Days to Kay Canvass. Supporters canvassed communities across the state, from Asheville to Greenville -- and even in Elizabeth Dole's very own Salisbury.

Today marks 91 days until Election Day and our second day profiling another reason for why Dole is wrong for NC:

DAY 91: TRADE

While Kay has unrolled her plan to make trade work first and foremost for North Carolina, Elizabeth Dole has voted with President Bush 92% of the time, supporting his failed trade policies which have left North Carolina’s textile and furniture industry struggling to stay competitive. Elizabeth Dole and President Bush pushed to expand the NAFTA model to Central America, with Dole voting for CAFTA twice, saying it would bring jobs to North Carolina. Really? In 2005, Bush visited a Belmont, North Carolina textile plant operated by R.L. Stowe Mills in order to urge the House of Representatives to pass CAFTA. In 2007, that plant closed permanently. Today, Kay is scheduled to tour a Taylorsville factory where she’ll discuss her plan to keep good jobs here in North Carolina.
