68 Days: Elizabeth Dole's Abysmal Record on Civil Rights Issues

DAY 68

45 years ago today, Martin Luther King Jr. altered the course of history forever when he delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. And though his words changed a generation, Elizabeth Dole has kept an abysmal record on civil rights issues in the years since. Dole defended Bush’s veto of the 1990 Civil Rights Act and has consistently earned failing grades from the NAACP and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.

69 Days: Dole puts politics over people and hurt North Carolina farmers

DAY 69

This month, Kay unveiled her comprehensive plan to reinvest in rural North Carolina, including its important farming economy. She crossed the state from wind farms in Beech Mountain to Pender Sharp’s farm in Sims to a fish house in Wanchese talking about her ideas to keep North Carolina’s rural communities vibrant. Yesterday, Elizabeth Dole responded by claiming she has been a “strong advocate” for North Carolina’s farmers, but when has she shown any dedication to them? When she voted against relief for crop losses, against energy tax credits for farmers, and against increased relief to farmers plagued by droughts and floods? What about when Dole voluntarily gave up her seat on the Agriculture Committee? Her decision to lead the NRSC in the 2006 election cycle put politics over people and hurt North Carolina farmers who needed a voice on the Agriculture Committee.

70 Days: Dole: Saying one thing in NC, doing another in DC

DAY 70

True to form, Elizabeth Dole continues to say one thing in North Carolina and do another in DC – this time about the War in Iraq. In an effort to distance herself from an unpopular President and a mismanaged war, Dole is now claiming that she has “voiced her criticisms” about the war, but her consistent votes to give Bush a blank check suggest otherwise. Now, the economy is on the brink and North Carolina families are struggling to make ends meet. Yet they are forced to fund an Iraqi reconstruction because of Dole’s irresponsible, partisan votes against using Iraqi oil revenues for reconstruction.

DOLE RHETORIC VS. REALITY ON IRAQ

DOLE RHETORIC: "There is no doubt that mistakes have been made in this war and I have certainly voiced my criticisms.” [Dole Video, 8/25/08]

REALITY: Dole Had “Great Confidence” In Bush and Rumsfeld on Iraq. Asked about Iraq in an August 2002 interview, Dole said, “I have great confidence in the president and his team. I think he’s surrounded by people like Don Rumsfeld, who I know very well, and couldn’t have a finer secretary of defense than Don Rumsfeld.” [CNN, 8/10/02]

71 Days: Behind closed doors, Elizabeth Dole shows her loyalty

DAY 71

While Elizabeth Dole tries to run away from her ties to the failed Bush Administration in public, behind closed doors she is being rewarded for her loyalty to Bush. Dole is slated to hold a fundraiser today with Alfred Austin, one of Bush’s top raisers who is just as out of touch with working families as all of the other Bush loyalists – Elizabeth Dole included.

72 Days: Happy Anniversary, Liddy!

DAY 72

Seven years ago today, just two days after hearing the news that Jesse Helms would not seek re-election, Dole registered to vote in North Carolina, after having been registered in Kansas for more than 25 years -- even running for President as a Jayhawk. But changing her registration was merely a technicality - she and Bob never left their home at the Watergate, where they live to this day. Dole's more than 40 year absence from North Carolina and her continued refusal to live in the state she claims to represent has left her out of touch with North Carolina and unprepared to work for the state's best interests.

73 Days: Dole votes against after school programs

DAY 73

During her tenure in the Senate, Elizabeth Dole has voted against billions of dollars of funding for after-school programs and Community Learning Centers that are crucial to keeping kids off the streets and out of trouble – just another example of how North Carolina suffers as a result of Elizabeth Dole’s proclivity to put the special interests ahead of the state’s best interests. This week, Kay unveiled her comprehensive plan to keep our streets and schools safe – just another example of how North Carolina will come first under Kay’s commonsense leadership.

74 Days: Dole’s inflated rhetoric has done nothing to help hardworking North Carolinians

DAY 74

Elizabeth Dole’s “Best in Congress” award, which she and only 49 of her 534 colleagues applied for themselves, is supposedly based on her support for working families. But how does she square that with the Drum Major Institute’s “F” score for her votes on behalf of North Carolina’s middle class? Or what about her votes against expanding children’s health insurance, raising the minimum wage, letting the government negotiate for lower drug prices, or increasing funding for Pell Grants? When it comes down to it, Dole’s inflated rhetoric has done nothing to help hardworking North Carolinians secure health care, afford pricey prescription drugs, or pay for college.

75 Days: Dole Opposed Funding for Law Enforcement

DAY 75

How safe are North Carolinians with Elizabeth Dole in office? Despite the usual big talk about her accomplishments for sheriffs, Dole has consistently voted to cut funding for COPS and other programs that North Carolina law enforcement officials have found to be invaluable. Dole’s votes have cost North Carolina law enforcement billions of dollars that would have helped fight crime and keep families safe. Over the next two days, Kay will receive endorsements from sheriffs from all over North Carolina who believe that Kay is the best candidate in this race.

76 Days: Dole Protects her Friends at Big Oil

DAY 76

While Kay has been discussing renewable energy at a wind farm in Boone and clean, green fuels at North Carolina A&T University, Elizabeth Dole has been in Washington doing everything she can to protect her friends at Big Oil and Gas. During her time in the Senate, gas prices have increased almost 250% and hardworking North Carolinians have struggled to make ends meet. By saying one thing in North Carolina, yet still voting to kill renewable energy tax credits in Washington, Dole has kept America dependent on foreign oil and ensured that her friends at Big Oil and Gas can continue to post record profits.

77 Days: Dole consistently votes against working families and raising the minimum wage

DAY 77

For nearly 20 years, Elizabeth Dole refused to see the value of raising the minimum wage, choosing instead to shield herself from the plight of every day workers who depend on the minimum wage to make ends meet and accepting pay raises for herself. Dole was ready to once again prove her anti-worker stance today when she agreed to speak at a rally to oppose legislation protecting workers’ rights.
