37 Days: Dole supports companies that send our jobs overseas

DAY 37

In the wake of the biggest financial meltdown since the 1920s, hardworking North Carolinians are not sure what the future holds in terms of job security. Elizabeth Dole’s history of leaving North Carolina jobs vulnerable to outsourcing should not bring them much comfort. In 2005, she voted in favor of tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas. Not a big surprise, though - Dole has taken over half a million dollars from companies that outsource their labor. It is the best interests of those companies that Dole has protected as a U.S. senator.

38 Days: In 2004, Dole was too busy campaigning with Bush to come to NC

DAY 38

In 2004, Elizabeth Dole campaigned all across the country for George Bush’s reelection campaign. Here in North Carolina, where she only spent 34 days that year, she lauded Bush’s policies as “just right” for North Carolinians. Four years later, what’s the result of those policies? Hardworking families are facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, gas prices are near $4 a gallon, college is farther out of reach and healthcare costs are astronomical. And Elizabeth Dole has been with Bush 92% of the time in supporting the policies that brought North Carolinians to this point.

39 Days: Dole's Votes Against Tax Cuts for the Middle Class

DAY 39

Today Kay will unroll her plans to advocate for middle class families whose interests have been relegated to last place by politicians like Elizabeth Dole. In addition to voting with President Bush 92% of the time, Dole has consistently voted against tax cuts for middle class families in favor of extending those benefits for the wealthiest in the country. Since June, she has voted 3 times against tax cuts for the hardworking middle class. In this economy, policies like that just don’t make sense for families who have been left to clean up after Wall Street’s greediness.

40 Days: Elizabeth Dole Ships Our Jobs Overseas

DAY 40

Yesterday, Hanesbrands announced it would be closing plants, conducting massive layoffs in North Carolina over the next year and moving some of those jobs to Asia. Elizabeth Dole supported opening trade with China that has cost 77,200 North Carolinian jobs, which is 2% of its total state employment. Shipping stable jobs overseas and making it harder to find work and afford healthcare? That is how Dole looks out for North Carolina.

41 Days: Dole's Inaction on the Banking Committee

DAY 41

Continuing her trend of saying one thing in North Carolina and doing another in Washington, Elizabeth Dole claimed this week that she has raised the Fannie and Freddie issue “time and again” during her six years on the Banking Committee. In reality, when Dole bothered to speak up at all, she has mentioned the mortgage giants in only a couple of committee hearings each year since 2003. Her reticence during these key hearings has left hardworking North Carolinians to foot the bill in the wake of the mortgage crisis and Wall Street catastrophe at a time when most families are concerned with filling the gas tank and getting food on the table.

42 Days: Dole's silence is finally speaking louder than words

DAY 42

Amid the Wall Street chaos last week, Elizabeth Dole promised to use her seat on the Banking Committee to investigate what exactly went wrong. However, she has been silent at more the 60 committee meetings previously, and last Thursday, Dole was again silent at the committee’s first hearing since the financial turmoil began. Based on transcripts, it is unclear if she was even present for the hearing. Another broken promise to North Carolinians at a time when they need an effective voice in Washington, and now Dole's silence is finally speaking louder than words.

43 Days: Dole Keeps Indicted Senator's Cash

DAY 43

Immediately following Sen. Stevens’ July indictment, the Hagan campaign called on Elizabeth Dole to return $21,000 in contributions she received from Stevens. Understanding that she needed to cut ties with him, Dole donated $10,000 of the money. Today jury selection for Stevens’ trial begins, and it is clear that Dole’s knee jerk donation was purely for show – she has yet to return the remaining $11,000.

44 Days: Dole's Infamous AIDS Amendment

DAY 44

As the United States Conference on AIDS draws to a close, North Carolinians might wonder what Elizabeth Dole has done to stem the tide of this tragic epidemic. One move she made this summer garnered national attention when she attempted to name the AIDS relief bill after her late predecessor and notorious foe of AIDS prevention and relief efforts, Senator Jesse Helms. But Dole didn’t get very far in her absurd endeavor – there was not one other Senator who supported her amendment.

45 Days: Elizabeth Dole & Ken Lay

DAY 45

On this day in 2001, during her first campaign for U.S. Senate, Elizabeth Dole attended a fundraiser in Houston hosted by Enron chairman Ken Lay. But a campaign spokesperson lied to North Carolinians when he announced that her campaign activities were allegedly still “on hold” that very same day. Just days after September 11, Dole was saying one thing and doing another in...Texas?

46 Days: Dole votes against Medicare and Medicaid funding 11 times

DAY 46

Today, Kay unrolls her plan to bring affordable, accessible healthcare to families in North Carolina and around the country. Millions of hardworking families depend on Medicare and Medicaid to stay healthy, but Elizabeth Dole has voted against funding these vital programs 11 times since she entered the Senate. She’s also voted against health care for North Carolina’s neediest children, leaving it up to the state to figure out how to care for them. That kind of health care record makes North Carolinians sick.
