27 Days: Dole's taxpayer spending spree...on a party

DAY 27

After receiving an $85 billion bailout with taxpayer money from the federal government, AIG was found spending nearly half a million dollars at the St. Regis Resort in California. Last fall, Elizabeth Dole struck a similar chord when her Senate office spent nearly $16,000 of taxpayer money on a staff meeting at a vacation destination on the Outer Banks. While North Carolinians faced home foreclosures, rising gas prices and the beginnings of an economic recession, did Elizabeth Dole really feel as though taxpayer money was best spent in this way? With that kind of reckless spending, with no regard for the people whose money it actually is, it is no wonder we’re having to bailout Wall Street and face a national debt that is nearing $10 trillion.

28 Days: Dole supporter broadcasts smears, ships NC jobs overseas

DAY 28

Freedom’s Watch is a conservative group founded and funded by Sheldon Adelson and staffed by numerous Bush White House alums. Who is Sheldon Adelson? The Chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, he has referred to himself as the largest investor in China – ever. He has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars lobbying our federal government, including disgraced Rep. Tom DeLay, to enact trade policies that hurt hardworking families and ship North Carolina jobs overseas. Adelson and his family gave nearly $40K to the NRSC when Dole was chair, and now he’s spending his money here, too, smearing Kay and her record of working on behalf of middle class families.

29 Days: Elizabeth Dole, the consummate Washington insider

DAY 29

Elizabeth Dole, the consummate Washington insider, will hold a fundraiser today in the Watergate Hotel, her home since 1975. In 2002, Dole won her Senate seat with help from Karl Rove and George Bush, but despite experience working in 6 administrations, Dole has failed to bring results home for North Carolinians. Maybe she just isn’t sure what North Carolinians need. After all, she only registered to vote in North Carolina just two days after Jesse Helms announced his retirement, after being gone from the state for 50 years, and in 2006 Dole spent just 13 days in the state. Too much time in Washington with her special interest friends has kept Elizabeth Dole out of touch.

30 Days: Dole's Abramoff Double Standard

DAY 30

As head of the NRSC in 2006, Elizabeth Dole refused to return or donate any of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff donated to the committee. But she acknowledged that the keeping the money was unethical when she returned the $1,000 that Abramoff donated to her personal campaign. Why the double standard?

31 Days: An Absentee U.S. Senator

DAY 31

Exactly one month before the election, and now that we’re down to the wire, political pundits from North Carolina and Washington DC are beginning to realize what North Carolinians have known for months – Elizabeth Dole is an absentee senator who has hardly lifted a finger to help hardworking families. Instead of working for her constituents, Dole has chosen instead to represent the interests of Big Oil and Gas, corporations that ship jobs overseas, and the failed policies of the Bush administration.

32 Days: Where's Liddy when the economy tumbles?

DAY 32

While the financial markets tumbled and the frozen credit markets propelled our economy into a “potentially dangerous new phase,” Elizabeth Dole was in Washington introducing superfluous legislation to celebrate Union Station. Not the most appropriate timing considering millions of North Carolinians are unsure what tomorrow will hold in terms of job security, health care and affording basic necessities.

33 Days: Dole kept seniors in the dark about Medicare Part D

DAY 33

When Congress was working on passing the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit, Elizabeth Dole stood up for the special interests, not North Carolina seniors, during the debate. Once the program passed, Dole was then willing to do whatever it took to make enrollment in the program difficult, including voting against extending the enrollment deadline and keeping seniors in the dark about possible coverage gaps. But why would Dole look out for North Carolina seniors when she is in the pocket of big Pharma?

34 Days: Dole wants to put your retirement at risk

DAY 34

Today in Raleigh, Kay holds a press conference to discuss Social Security in light of the recent economic turmoil. Elizabeth Dole showed where her priorities stood when she voted repeatedly against protecting Social Security, including prioritizing the Bush tax cuts over this crucial safety net - a program that countless North Carolinians depend upon for their retirements. Dole has stood steadfastly and consistently by George Bush in his fight to put our seniors' retirement at risk and Bush even used Dole as an example of how to run for office while hanging millions of hardworking families out to dry.

35 Days: Dole Holds on to Convicted Felon's Money

DAY 35

Today, on the eve of the 3rd Quarter campaign contribution filing deadline, Elizabeth Dole is holding tightly to the money donated to her by convicted felon Alan Fabian. U.S. Attorneys asserted Fabian “carried out brazen fraud schemes that involved cheating victims of nearly $40 million.” Fabian and his wife contributed $9,200 to the Dole campaign in May 2007. Later that year, Fabian resigned from a volunteer post on the Romney presidential campaign following an indictment in Maryland for allegedly defrauding companies of $32 million. Romney returned Fabian’s contribution, as did Rudy Giuliani. To date, Dole is the only candidate to not return or donate Fabian’s dirty money.

36 Days: Dole's Limited Time in NC

DAY 36

After living in Washington for 40 years, Elizabeth Dole re-registered as North Carolinian in 2001 to wage a bid for Jesse Helms’ U.S. Senate seat. Since then, the numbers prove that Dole still does not consider North Carolina home. In 2006, Dole spent just 13 days in North Carolina, choosing instead to campaign for Republicans running for Senate in other states. Her “neighbors” in Salisbury aren’t sure where she lives or what to think, and have admitted that they see her housekeeper far more often than they see her. Kay is a true North Carolinian who has raised a family and made a life here – she knows that being a North Carolinian means more than just a voter registration card.
