17 Days: NC unemployment reaches six year high at 7%

DAY 17

In the month of September, unemployment in North Carolina hit 7 percent – the highest it has been in six years. More North Carolinians than ever are searching for work, but what did Elizabeth Dole to keep good-paying jobs here and help those looking for work? She voted for the NAFTA trade model that has cost North Carolina thousands of jobs. She voted against extending unemployment benefits seven times. And she voted against funding workforce training 3 times. Out of touch with North Carolina and too busy supporting the special interests, Elizabeth Dole just doesn’t get it.

18 Days: Dole Skips Another Banking Committee Meeting...

DAY 18

Yesterday, Elizabeth Dole again chose politics over people when she skipped a Banking committee hearing about the financial turmoil to campaign for her own re-election with VP nominee Sarah Palin. This marks the 62nd time that Dole has been silent during a meeting of the Banking Committee. In the wake of the financial crisis, Dole pledged to use her seat on the committee to investigate the causes of the turmoil. Obviously that was just her saying one thing in North Carolina while doing another in DC.

19 Days: Early Vote Begins: Dole's Voter Registration History

DAY 19

Today, North Carolinians across the state will start to head to the polls on the first day of early voting. For over 25 years, Elizabeth Dole was registered to vote as a Kansan. But in 2001, just days after Jesse Helms announced his retirement, Dole thought it would be an opportune time to reconnect with North Carolina – a state she had not lived in for over 40 years. Now, hardworking North Carolinians are paying the price for an out of touch senator who spends more time in the Watergate than her “home” state.

20 Days: Dole's Balance Sheet...

DAY 20

For a black and white testament to Dole’s absenteeism from North Carolina, all one has to do is take a look at her balance sheet. Elizabeth Dole has received the majority of her campaign contributions from outside North Carolina. More than three-quarters of Kay’s money has come straight from the North Carolinians she will represent. It’s no wonder North Carolinians aren’t interested in donating to a senator who has put special interests and George Bush before everything else.

21 Days: Dole hides behind Bush, misleads North Carolinians

DAY 21

A new ad check from WXII yesterday found that a Dole ad attacking Kay’s record on taxes was “misleading.” Not a total surprise considering the News and Record and News and Observer have both found Elizabeth Dole’s other negative ads to be false.

Dole’s attacks on taxes? Misleading.

Dole’s attacks on Kay’s investment in oil and gas wells? Untrue.

Dole’s use of the fabricated “Fibber Kay” moniker? Unconscionable.

Maybe Dole thinks she can hide from her solid support of President Bush’s failed agenda and gross ineffectiveness if she spouts lies about her opponent, but North Carolinians can see right through it.

22 Days: Panic Time for Dole/McCain in North Carolina

DAY 22

Now that North Carolina presidential race has moved into most pundits’ “toss up” category, John McCain and the national Republicans are hitting the panic button. McCain makes his first stop in the state since the primary today and he will no doubt emphasize the same broken Bush policies that he and Elizabeth Dole supported 90% and 92% of the time, respectively. Tax breaks for Big Oil, privatizing social security, cutting health care for children and sending North Carolina jobs overseas – where would it end with a McCain-Dole team, and how much worse would it get for North Carolina families?

23 Days: Dole sits on the sidelines...

DAY 23

Yesterday, a Raleigh News & Observer editor noted that “Dole sat on the sidelines for years as residents of Washington and Beaufort counties fought the landing field and filed lawsuits.” Dole chose to stay silent until after the N&O wrote a front-page story about her indecision. Even Gov. Easley had to turn to senators from other states to find someone who would help him stop this terrible idea. Time and again, Dole has been content to sit silently by while others do the work. While we think she was more than likely motivated by politics, the N&O editor has another plausible explanation: “Maybe Dole, who is spotted in North Carolina only occasionally, didn’t know those counties are in North Carolina.”

24 Days: Dole votes against children's health insurance

DAY 24

A new report out this week revealed that North Carolina’s children are losing health insurance at a faster rate than any other state in the nation. As the senior U.S. senator from North Carolina, you’d think Elizabeth Dole would care. But instead she voted against extending and expanding SCHIP six times in just one year. In 2006, nearly 250,000 North Carolina children depended on this program, but Dole’s six votes the following year denied coverage to millions of children who were without adequate health insurance, including 123,000 in North Carolina. She said there should be an alternative, yet took her sweet time -- nine months -- to propose one. Dole’s refusal to sign on to this bipartisan legislation contributed to the gridlock in Washington that has made life more difficult for hardworking North Carolina families who must now struggle just to keep their children healthy.

25 Days: Dole-Bush Fundraising

DAY 25

Today, Elizabeth Dole will hold a fundraiser with Laura Bush in Raleigh, and in September, President George H.W. Bush held a fundraiser for her, too. Though she’s running away from President George W. Bush, with whom she’s voted 92% of the time, she’s more than happy to take his family’s help for fundraising. This election year, Dole skipped Bush’s final State of the Union, the Republican Convention, and a fundraiser with the President in Raleigh, but she’s more than happy to appear with his family, for a price. It must be even more difficult for Dole to stay this far away from Bush when she’s at home in Washington – the Watergate and the White House aren’t all that far apart.

26 Days: Dole toes the party line to the detriment of North Carolinians

DAY 26

While she toured eastern North Carolina and toed the party line, Elizabeth Dole touted John McCain’s health care proposal that would give tax credits to people to use for medical care. Nevermind the 20 million Americans who would lose their health care, the higher taxes American workers would pay as a result of McCain’s plan, or that McCain’s own website notes the tax credits would go directly to the insurance companies. If it’s an idea floated by a national Republican who, like her, has voted with George Bush nine times out of ten, Elizabeth Dole is more than content to toe the party line, regardless of what it means for people in her state.
