Principles vs. rules

In the world of accounting, there are two main foundations on which businesses operate. For the United States, the foundation is called US GAAP, a set of rules that guides each decision at each level of financial management. In every other country, the foundation is called IFRS, a set of accounting principles (not rules) that typically require people to make judgments and choices.
