Taylor Reports Have Million-Dollar Errors
> By John Armor
> Every Member of Congress, and every candidate for Congress, is required to file Reports with the House Ethics Committee on their financial holdings and transactions. Apparently, few people take a serious look at these after they are filed. The Reports filed by incumbent 11th District Representative, Charles Taylor, for the last seven years (the ones available on-line) show five errors in excess of $1 million each, plus one unexplained item for about $20 million.
> These Reports are filed with the Clerk of the House but they "will be reviewed by the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct [the House Ethics Committee]." The Reports must be signed by the Member or candidate, who must certify that "the statements ... are true, complete and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief." "Civil penalties and criminal sanctions [including perjury]" apply to anyone who "knowingly and willingly falsifies ... or willfully fails to file" these Reports.

An anonymous person in my neighborhood has been leaving books in my mailbox. The second one arrived today. It is called "The Final Days" by Barbara Olson. This one promises to reveal:

How the Clintons and the Rodhams enriched themselves with "Pardons for Sale." The scandalous story of Marc Rich - his connection to Castro's Cuba, Libya's Gaddafi, and Bill Clinton. How Hillary shamelessly solicited gifts, a shakedown artists in a pink dress. The other Travelgate: how Clinton's globtrotting cost taxpayers half a billion dollars.

I suppose my anonymous neighbor thinks I'll read this piece of crap book and come to the startling realization the the Clinton administration was a horrible blight on our nation's history. Think again, dear neighbor. And while you're at it, think about the $27.95 you paid for this hardback book being dumped in the recycling bin along with the first book you gave me. Because frankly, I don't spend one second of any day thinking about Bill Clinton. Nope, the person on my mind is Dear Leader, King George W. Bush, the continuing disaster that is our president. So please. Keep your trashy books out of my mailbox.

Feds Propose 34 Mile Road Through Smokies

(Cross-posted at the new Appalachian Voices blog)

This is what Swain County, NC looks like...

The federal government is now poised to build a 34-mile road right through Smokies on the North Carolina side, destroying one of the largest remaining pristine forestlands in the Eastern United States.

The deadline for comments on the draft of the “Environmental Impact Statement”(EIS) is this Friday, April 7. Please submit a comment to the Park Service today to oppose the North Shore Road.

What about our Vets Needs?

Just where do our needs fit in? Shouldnt we take care of our own first?

Charles Taylor, Liz Dole! Is there something you want to tell us?

Dept. of Veterans Affairs Repeatedly Violated Ban Against Diverting Health Care Funding

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is asking the Department of Justice to open a criminal investigation into the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) efforts to use funds appropriated for the Veterans Health Administration to pay for the conduct of expensive outsourcing studies that set the stage for the elimination of federal jobs.

In a letter sent today to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, AFGE
National President John Gage asked for "an immediate criminal investigation of current management at the VA" for violations of 38 U.S.C. 8110 (a)(5) and the Anti-Deficiency Act, 31 U.S.C. 1341(a), laws that prohibit the diversion of appropriated health care dollars to pay for outsourcing studies.

War on science continues

It's one thing to be anti-science when you're arguing about the age of the earth or whether evolution is real, but it's another thing altogether when your ideological zealotry kills innocent people and you lie about the consequences of your action.

Insistence by Republican Congressional leaders that American money to fight the spread of AIDS globally be used to emphasize abstinence and fidelity is undercutting comprehensive and widely accepted aid models, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Tuesday.
