(Cross-posted at the new Appalachian Voices blog)

This is what Swain County, NC looks like...

The federal government is now poised to build a 34-mile road right through Smokies on the North Carolina side, destroying one of the largest remaining pristine forestlands in the Eastern United States.

The deadline for comments on the draft of the “Environmental Impact Statement”(EIS) is this Friday, April 7. Please submit a comment to the Park Service today to oppose the North Shore Road.

What about our Vets Needs?

Just where do our needs fit in? Shouldnt we take care of our own first?

Charles Taylor, Liz Dole! Is there something you want to tell us?

Dept. of Veterans Affairs Repeatedly Violated Ban Against Diverting Health Care Funding

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is asking the Department of Justice to open a criminal investigation into the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) efforts to use funds appropriated for the Veterans Health Administration to pay for the conduct of expensive outsourcing studies that set the stage for the elimination of federal jobs.

In a letter sent today to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, AFGE
National President John Gage asked for "an immediate criminal investigation of current management at the VA" for violations of 38 U.S.C. 8110 (a)(5) and the Anti-Deficiency Act, 31 U.S.C. 1341(a), laws that prohibit the diversion of appropriated health care dollars to pay for outsourcing studies.

War on science continues

It's one thing to be anti-science when you're arguing about the age of the earth or whether evolution is real, but it's another thing altogether when your ideological zealotry kills innocent people and you lie about the consequences of your action.

Insistence by Republican Congressional leaders that American money to fight the spread of AIDS globally be used to emphasize abstinence and fidelity is undercutting comprehensive and widely accepted aid models, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Tuesday.

Conner's Letter to the Governor

Jerry Conner has responded to the Governor's letter setting a time for Mr. Conner's clemency hearing.

"Mr. Conner will not petition for clemency, nor will we appear on his behalf at a clemency hearing until a DNA test is conducted and the results are returned. We trust that as Governor you share our interest in ensuring access to all available information in order to make a fair and informed decision about clemency."

Bleh blahs

Do you ever have those days when you can't decide whether to scream your bloody head off . . . or just go take a nap? That's where I've been for the past few days, and it's depressing as hell. You'd think the news of the Bugman going down would brighten my spirits, but it hasn't. If anything, Delay's demise has made things worse. The fact that such a sleazebag ever rose to prominence in US politics is a sobering reminder of how far we have to go as a nation.

Other news on the flip:

Must be New Bush Project to do this! This is SICK!!!!

So, It's come to this! Well, You all have rarely ever seen me upset! But with my background in LE this has me madder than a Damn nest of stirred up Hornets!

Last week I found where they busted a NASA executive for the very same thing! And it is OUR Tax money that pays for them to do this crap!
