Another Corrupt Republican Goes Down

After Tony Rudy's plea last month I quit watching to see how this case was progressing. I was a bit surprised to see this news in The Washington Post this morning. Neil Volz, Staffer #2, pled guilty to conspiracy charges in the scandals linked to lobbyists Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon.

Volz was Bob Ney's (Representative #1) chief of staff. Volz requested and received many gifts from Abramoff. These included tickets to sporting events, dinners and golf outings. Volz concealed the gifts by simply failing to report them.

Yessssss Master

Art Pope's ongoing palace coup has stirred up a firestorm of concern among those of us interested in keeping corporate money out of North Carolina elections, and I guess the Puppetmaster must be feeling the heat. Because today he sent his stage manager out into the Internets with more revisionist history, painting the Master as the source of all things good and honest. As usual, John Hood is right, and everybody else is wrong.

It should be obvious that the prevailing take on Tuesday’s balloting among capital city political circles makes no sense. It does not comport with Pope’s history of participating in bipartisan coalitions in the General Assembly and helping to form and fund cross-ideological coalitions in the public policy community. And it does not explain why Republicans with differing views on a variety of hot-button issues – abortion, immigration, school choice, and economic incentives, just to name a few – were in agreement that Richard Morgan and his faction had sabotaged their party’s prospects and the integrity of the legislative process in alliance with ethically challenged House Speaker Jim Black.

Another message of hope: "This administration may be over"

In WaPo today:

"This administration may be over," Lance Tarrance, a chief architect of the Republicans' 1960s and '70s Southern strategy, told a gathering of journalists and political wonks last week. "By and large, if you want to be tough about it, the relevancy of this administration on policy may be over."

But even more exciting is what they wrote about our man, Al:

Former vice president Al Gore sent an e-mail to Democratic donors recently to "commemorate" the final 1,000 days of the Bush administration.

I just finished law school.

I just finished my last law school assignment. Ever. A week from right now I'll be getting all graduated and then my family members can start asking me about traffic tickets and whether I can help them with their wills.

Congrats to me, of course, and to TarGator, who will also be walking next weekend. As for now, I believe I'll be drinking a cold Fat Tire and then maybe getting some sleep, and then maybe watching some Simpsons.... Really, the possibilities are endless.

A Message of Hope, A Time for Action

As outraged as we are and as horrifying as the pictures of dead and injured children are we can find solice in the fact that we are horrified and outraged. We are not the war mongers of the right who simply don't seem to care how many lives they destroy as long as they get to play with their guns.

To leave this morning's discussions on a happy note, I found a site for a group called, Operation Iraqi Children. It was founded by Gary Sinise and Laura Hillenbrand. They are doing great work.

WWJD

An amazing 15 year old girl, Ava Lowrey, started working about a year ago on animations that push back at the Bush administration and the Iraq War. She has produced at least 70. I will be highlighting her work over the next several weeks as we approach Memorial Day.

Some of her work uses the same pictures put to different songs, but all of it is very powerful. Please view the following video. It will only take a few minutes. Have a tissue handy.

Not in God's Name

For the past five and a half years we've watched as our country has fallen into the clutches of a lying, egomaniacal fascist who thinks God speaks to him. We've watched as our civil liberties have been ravaged and the man entrusted with protecting the Constitution that guarantees these liberties has reserved the right to break the laws of this land. In a country where no man is above the law, George W. Bush has elevated himself above all men and our laws. The scariest part of all of this, is that he has done it in the name of God.
