Wrenn gets it wrong

It's always fun to stop by The Boy Pundit's website to see what Carter Wrenn (right wing) and Gary Pearce (left wing) have to say about the sad state of North Carolina politics. It's fun because they're always messing with each other, and also because they've both long had their hands in stirring the sorry soup. My subject tonight is Wrenn's latest blog post:

Few would argue with the proposition that Jim Black, after a year of ‘pay to play’ scandals, is now the most unpopular man in North Carolina. A series of hearings, investigations, and exposes has left the heretofore sure-footed House Leader battered and bruised. But don’t despair. The wiley Democrats have a solution: Art Pope. The Democrats are going to make Pope the most unpopular man in North Carolina – on the theory that when they do voters are going to forget all about Jim Black.

Look for State House hearings to investigate Pope and the ‘millions’ he’s spending on politics. Look for Pope, his friends, the heads of the different conservative organizations he funds (the Locke Foundation and Republican Legislature Majority Committee) and a bevy of political consultants to be called to testify. Look for a lot of digging into Pope’s company, Variety Wholesalers, Inc.

Look for a State Board of Elections hearings where Pope is treated with the same respect as a video poker operator or an optometrist taking the Fifth. Then in the fall, as Republicans rev-up their campaign denouncing Black, look for a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth about millionaires buying elections as the Democrats answer them by denouncing Pope.

I wonder what rock Carter Wrenn has been hiding under lately? There's already plenty of wailing about Pope's sleazy tactics and the undue influence of corporate money in North Carolina elections. At least around here.

But what I don't get is how a guy like Wrenn can live with his hypocrisy. I had some brief hope that his half of Boy Pundits might shake my image of Republican hacks. But alas, this is not to be. Carter Wrenn can heap a ton of scorn on Jim Black, who fully deserves it, but can't quite bring himself to acknowledge that what Art Pope is doing is out of bounds too.

But this is what most caught my eye: The Democrats are going to make Pope the most unpopular man in North Carolina – on the theory that when they do voters are going to forget all about Jim Black.

Aren't you just sick of this kind of crap? Wrenn assumes North Carolinians are so stupid they can't hate two rich white @ssholes who are trying to manipulate the system for personal gain. And his implicit defense of the Puppetmaster suggests he's just another supporting actor in the Art Pope Puppetshow.
