What's up in your neck of the woods? - Open Thread

Great news for Charlotte. Even though the city pays its city manager substantially lower than comparable cities, Charlotte has hired a new city manager to replace the retiring Pam Syfert.

Curt Walton, who was one of three men under consideration for the job, was selected in a unanimous final decision last night by the Charlotte City Council. The other two men had their supporters and both brought great qualities to the table, but the final unanimous decision was for Curt Walton.

The Charlotte Observer has this story.

Today at 12:30 you can meet Sam and Blue South outside General Assembly Room 1027 to help demand answers from Less Merit. Somebody please call us with details! I can't make it and really wish I could be there.

If you're in Charlotte, Working Families Win is having a rally to promote a state earned income tax credit. It will be at 1:00pm outside the IRS office at 6635 Executive Circle. (Near Harris and Albemarle Rd. intersection) Help Working Families Win and ACORN demand answers from the Senate as to why the wealthiest in North Carolina continue to catch all the breaks......the tax breaks.

Don't forget the Kissell fundraiser Friday in Concord.

In my neck of the woods

it looks like we sold our house out from under ourselves, so I'm out looking for rental property around Lincoln County...there's nothing in Lincoln at the moment...literally nothing. The county hasn't over-built. I called the school system and they said if we have our land and a contract to build, they would consider letting us enroll the girls this fall.

Lots to do....and for once, I'm not complaining. :)

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

We have a signed contract!

Now the financing has to go through. :)

And....we have to find somewhere to live.

Eight days on the market.......almost a year preparing for it, though.

Congratulations!

Whew! and good luck. Here's hoping it all comes together for you just as it should - with a minimum of ulcers and headaches.

How 'bout that travel trailer?

Lovex7

Bwahahahaha.......riiiight

We actually found a house in a neighborhood right down from Davidson and right off the lake. Not bad, but not in Lincoln Co. Thursday I will meet with folks in Lincoln County schools to find out exactly what they want to see to prove we're building there.

Morning Edition and Marketplace

From what I can tell, Sen. Snow will be talking biofuels today on Morning edition and Marketplace

Not exactly my neck of the woods but -

a situation I have been following for months.

Behold the unintended consequences of doing something very stupid.

The only part I have trouble with is this:

But Democrats say there is evidence that the dismissals were part of a Bush administration effort to affect investigations in public corruption and voting cases that would assist Republicans. The probe has also shown that politics may have played a role in the hiring of some career Justice employees, in possible violation of federal law.

Take out the italicized words and it reads thus:

There is evidence that the dismissals were part of a Bush administration effort to affect investigations in public corruption and voting cases that would assist Republicans. The probe has also shown that politics played a role in the hiring of some career Justice employees in violation of federal law.

That's how the paragraph should read. Quit with the ambiguous BS and call a spade a spade. It ain't 'Democrats say...' It just is.

I was going to quote from it, but it's too good to just show a little bit.

Everybody needs to follow the link.

That Was a Great Letter

It's past time to be bold. I salute you, sir.

Call it what it is - hatred, fear, bigotry, unacceptable.

Try as I might

I can't get either page to open from this computer. (Could be the county system being crappy; it happens.)

In other news, I'm feeling a bit cranky today.

We noticed.

:)

And we love it when you're cranky.

Teehee

Not everyone does, apparently. *shrug* Maybe I hit a little close to home.

In my neck of the woods...

The all republican County Commission yesterday voted to double the fee developers pay for each home built in an area where schools are over capacity.

The new fee of $8,075 is meant to cover a portion of the school capital costs for each home built.

The real school capital cost is about $12,425 per new home.

See you all Friday in Concord for the Larry Kissell fund raiser!

Pat McCrory for Re-Election

In my neck of the woods

The Moore County Commissioners have imposed a 60 moratorium on new subdivisions in the western part of the county designated as Small Area A.

Area A encompasses Eagle Springs, Jackson Springs, Seven Lakes, West End, Lake Diamond and rural environs. It is an area targeted for thousands of new homes that would dramatically increase the population if and when all the planned subdivisions are completed.

A special committee is working on a land-use plan that would apply specifically to Area A.

Smack dab in the middle of the thousands of new homes planned in that area is another new golf course - because you know, there just aren't enough of those in and around Pinehurst.

The good thing about this moratorium is that the County Commission and the Planning Board are listening to the residents who are asking for a study and a plan before any more building is done. I'm skeptical that 60 days is long enough, but frankly it's more than I expected.

If Momoaizo pops in any time soon, she can tell us more about this, that's even more her neck of the woods than mine.

One More Thing that Makes Me Grind My Teeth

dear sweet jesus in the morning - is it 2009 yet?

Does anyone anywhere have privacy anymore?

I'm off hunting the YouTube vid.

Here's the trailer:

I wrote about this part of NCLB here a few months ago. I've found that it doesn't matter, as soon as dear son signed up for the SAT's, the College Board released his name to the Military. We get recruiters calling here at least once a week, and 4 or 5 pieces of junk mail every day. None of the junk mail says anything about Iraq! Imagine that!

You Know - I'm Just Nasty Enough

to send that mail back with the attached memo:

'**** you and the horse you rode in on.'

And me a Veteran, no less.

antidisestablishmentarianism - a new definition - to divorce with vigor from the powers that be. AMEN.

If you want to know the truth,

I believe that peace lovin' little ole me taught the last navy recruiter who called here a few choice words he'd never heard before.

Of course, they were in Italian.
