Welcome to BlueNC

Happy New Year and welcome to BlueNC. Those of you who have been here a while will notice some changes we're implementing. You should still be able to do everything you were able to do before. We are still using Drupal, but we've added a new look and a few new features. There are some changes we will continue to work on and we will certainly take any suggestions under advisement. Be nice. I'm new at this and I'm tired! :)

The first thing we will fix is the new comment layout. I'm embarrassed to say that when I was trying this layout on for size, I did it at my site and never once checked to see what the comments would look like. I should have that fixed by later today.

Some of the colors we are using might not come across well on older computers or on every monitor. Please let me know if you are having really bad problems with the colors.

We have added two new horizontal panels with each having three content areas. The top panel has a section where we can feature original content and highlight it for a longer period of time than is normal on the front page. At first most of this content will come from the front page team, but we will also invite others to submit articles and as usual will pull from posts submitted by our awesome community. The top panel also is home to our own announcement page as well as the latest live-blog session.

The lower panel is home to BlueNCtv, the BlueNC Events list with a link to the calendar and the people's think tank. In the think tank we can highlight great comments from active threads. Like the recommended list, this section should help bring folks into the conversation that's going on away from the front page.

Please do leave constructive comments even if it's something you think we might already know about. We want the site to be easy to use and pleasing to the eye for as many as possible.

Thank you

I certainly learned a lot and things that seemed so intimidating at first are easy as pie now.

Here hear!

Beautiful work, dear. Thank you so much!

Why thank you.....

I appreciate all your help with the masthead and other details. It's funny how every little detail becomes important.

Admin folks are doing a fantastic

job regarding giving us a forum to express our opinions. You guys are awesome!

Betsy, is there a way to put back the yellow background for new comments.

I am using firefox.

When there are multiple new posts, in a long listing, having the yellow background on the new post is easier for me to pick out then scrolling down looking for the red "NEW".

This might just be a glitchy thing as something similar happens to me once in a while under the old system.

Hummm, when I did preview comment, I got the yellow background. Might just be this particular session vice a common thing. Might be nothing Betsy. Sorry.

closed down firefox

and came back in. still do not get the yellow background when coming from HOME page or from track changes.

On my screen it looks like everything is just running togather without breaks.

There's a way

but I might be too tired to deal with it today. :)

I like the yellow highlighting as well. We certainly need that back. The comments are where everything happens on a community blog, so getting the setup right is extremely important. Thanks, Parmea

I guess the "who's online" thingy got gone

I liked that little guy. He made me feel not so alone. But I guess he got nixed as too invasive?

Even if it doesn't come back, Betsy: GREAT!

Funny story: I was writing a long comment and the changes kicked in between the time I started and the time I pressed "post comment". I thought my cold medicine had turned on me!

And look! I hadn't even seen the BlueNC TV block down there! Goooooood....

Not nixed...just won't show up

We're having some problems with the caching that I didn't encounter at the test site and was too tired to deal with, but I'm back to work some more. Thanks and glad you like the changes.

All links on left now active

I still have work to do on the recommended diaries link, but that should be active fairly soon.

thanks

Looks very nice and I am glad you hired a taxonomy manager. I understand that is the it profession these days.

Hahahahaha

Funny Kirk. We didn't hire a taxidermist....there was no need to stuff the old BlueNC. ;)

looking great!

I love the new look and appreciate everything you do Betsy!

It looks a lot more "professional", even though I hate that word.

OOOOooo...thank you Thierry

We were going for crisp, clean and functional. We still have some tweaking to do, but I think we just might make it.

I haven't been here in awhile

but, this is a truly beautiful site. I have moved to Virginia and still read this site daily. Although I also like VA progressive blogs, they don't look this great! Well done! You really should be proud of yourself.

I do have one minor suggestion. At the top box on the front page, can you make the titles of each article a link? I tried clicking them, because most sites are set up that headlines are links. If not, no big deal.

I can't stress how good this site looks! Good enough for me to post a state away!

Thank you! I didn't know you'd moved

Unfortunately, that's the one thing I don't think we can do easily. We are going to have small button graphics that will be links and hopefully that will help. It's a really good suggestion and when I learn how to change Drupal itself I might be able to make it work. (Anyone who knows how primitive my skills are can just stop laughing now...) :)

Block Quotes

are difficult to differentiate from original content. That may be a template issue, and we may or may not be able to fix it. It's made me stumble a time or two as I've been reading, but I'm sure I can adjust if it can't be changed. :)

Oh....don't worry...we'll have our old blockquotes back

I loved our blue boxes. Does anyone have an objection to them? I even liked the big quotation marks in them. Suggestions?

Nope - I loved those, too.

It really made it easier to see if we were quoting someone else or using our own words. I think that's important. I'd like to see the comments shaded a bit, one from the other, but that's personal preference again, too.

What is a taxonomy manager? Who do we get to have stuffed first?

In and out today

I'm working on code changes over at NCPolitico instead of messing with stuff here. Thanks for the input. Keep it coming. If something really jumps out or doesn't work right, please let us know.

wow. Popped in to see what was up and

lookie lookie at the spiffy new layout. Very nice, Betsy. 2008 is going to be a great year!

I choose to be inspired.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Nice facelift!

Having messed with the internals of Drupal myself, I know how hard it is to get "just right" - great job and now we are ready for 2008!

Whoo!

I like it a lot! Better than the old one, which while it was home, was a bit clunky around the edges.

Thank you, Thank you!

We're going to try to keep it simple, but it isn't easy with all the fun bells and whistles available.

WOW!

BlueNC is Bee U Ti Full! Betsy you did a great job. I've always felt that BlueNC was a more professional looking site than any others, now it even outstrips the MSM sites. Thank you SD, as usual you amaze me.
