Weekend wound-up: Open thread

I don't know about you, but I'm in a good mood this weekend. BlueSouth has graduated and is off on the summer of a lifetime. The Navy has been handed its head on a Washington County platter. Wolfowitz is out. Gonzo is next. Fred Smith is in Greg Flynn's cross-hairs. Liddy Dole is getting invisibler and invisibler. I'm a "noted Democratic blogger." And the weather outside is gorgeous.

Happy weekend everyone.

What Enemy List?

James Protzman, also known as Anglico on the BlueNC group blog and comments here, posted an open letter to House Speaker Joe Hackney today.

In it, he called the New Hanover Democrat "an embarrassment" to the House: *N&O

After reviewing your list of people that you have smoke out as idiots of the Republican neo-con Pope machine and couple of corrupt Democrats. Either you are the bravest fool on the internet or a complete idiot with a enemy list like that!

I would not be surprise to see your picture on the Post Office wanted dead or alive list with a reward.

Strike that! Make that Republican State party HQ's and Art Pope secret bunker at his mansion.

CSpan Yesterday,McHenry flirting with Barney Frank?

Yesterday, on C-Span, Republicans were spending alot of time on the floor speechifying their efforts to "protect" social security from the Democrats.

(yes thats funny, but not the point of this comment).

Am I hallucinating, or is Patrick McHenry getting sillier and sillier?

He stood up to comment, solely for the purpose of "inquiring" about Barney Frank's arm being in a cast.

Something along the lines of - could the gentleman from Mass tell us how he came about his injury? - or something like that.

Frank said NO, you may not, and pretty much shut the McFreak down.

Pattie was so giggly and giddy in this exchange, it just really got my attention.

what a little &^$*&

For those unfamiliar with the story, Barney Frank sent a letter to all of his colleagues saying what the story was and asking them not to ask him about it.

McHenry is obviously 6 years old.

Like this?

Funny

But given my OCD challenges, I'm afraid this room would drive me nuts.

oooooO...You'd last 5 seconds in my office

I work best with my files, papers and research strewn about in an order only I understand. My husband doesn't dare come in for fear he'll upset my "system". If I'm missing something important I know it is probably in the stack the dog is sleeping on. :)

Hundreds Click on 'Click Here to Get Infected' Ad

That was evidenced by the 409 people who clicked on an ad that offers infection for those with virus-free PCs. The ad, run by a person who identifies himself as security professional Didier Stevens, reads like this:

Drive-By Download
Is your PC virus-free?
Get it infected here!
drive-by-download.info

Stevens, who says he works for Contraste Europe, a branch of the IT consultancy The Contraste Group, has been running his Google Adwords campaign for six months now and has received 409 hits. Stevens has done similar research in the past, such as finding out how easy it is to land on a drive-by download site when doing a Google search.

In a posting about the drive-by download campaign, Stevens says that he got the idea after picking up a small book on Google Adwords at the library and finding out how easy and cheap it is to set up an ad.

As if the plainly-worded ad weren't enough for some folks:

First, Stevens bought the drive-by-download.info domain. .info domains are notorious for hosting malware, he points out. Then he set up a server to display the innocuous message "Thank you for your visit" and to log the requests.

No PCs were harmed in this experiment, he emphasizes. The site is benign and has never hosted malware or other scripts or code. Then he started the Google Adwords campaign, using combinations of the words "drive-by download" along with the ad, which links to the drive-by-download.info site.

Next, he sat and waited … for six months.

Over that period, his ad was viewed 259,723 times and clicked on 409 times, for a click-through rate of about 16 percent. The experiment cost him $23, or 6 cents per click/potentially infected machine.

Of the 409 people who clicked, 98 percent were running Windows machines, according to the user agent string, which is a text string that identifies a Web site visitor to a server. The agent string typically includes application name, version, host operating system and language.

Finally doing something I've wanted to for a long time.

Message that will go out with the June PDNC newsletter:

Dear NC Progressive Dems,

If you’re like me, you don’t want to wait for the next Summit to be in touch with the rest of our community, so....

I would like to invite you all to join in discussion at the blog,
BlueNC.com Starting on June 4th, I’ll be putting up a special post for NC Progressive Democrats so we can meet at that designated place on Monday nights.

BlueNC is a great source for the exchange of ideas and it’s also one of the most user friendly blogs I’ve seen. Be sure to register on the site so you will be able to post comments. It's easy.

Let me know if I can help in any way getting you started.

Hope you all like the idea. I ran it past Anglico and he gave it a thumbs up. Maybe someone will frontpage it so new people can find it. Please?

Yes!

I was hoping you'd keep this idea alive . . . and I'm very excited about seeing what the Progressive Dems are up to these days. Starting next month, Monday nights should be extra fun!

Thanks again for doing this. The message is perfect.

So, that makes you.....

Ladies and Gentelmen

I present to you, your GOP Senators:

At a bipartisan gathering in an ornate meeting room just off the Senate floor, McCain complained that Cornyn was raising petty objections to a compromise plan being worked out between Senate Republicans and Democrats and the White House. He used a curse word associated with chickens and accused Cornyn of raising the issue just to torpedo a deal.
:::
"Wait a second here," Cornyn said to McCain. "I've been sitting in here for all of these negotiations and you just parachute in here on the last day. You're out of line."
:::
"[Expletive] you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room," shouted McCain at Cornyn.

edit- He is running for PRESIDENT. roll that around for 5 seconds and see what you think. PRESIDENT! I mean holy freaking crap.

well

I've been in meetings where I've wanted to say that.

But I haven't.

Much.

And - I'm not running for President. (but he was talking to Cornyn, I mean, c'mon. He probably did know more about it.)

I will grant

that Cornyn is crazy, but his state also has the longest border with Mexico and is directly affected by most of this regulation.

On the other hand, McCain has missed almost 50 straight roll call votes.

OK.

You're right. You're right - I was simply reacting after a 12 hour day in and out of meetings where I really wanted to say "expletive You! It's friday and I want to go home!"

McCain is insane.

So - here, to remind you of the current insanity in the White House:

We went down with some family friends who have kids the same age. It was great, cool and sunny. Sigh, back to the grind.
