We did it!

The Grand Old Party in North Carolina has done something no one imagined possible. They are the first* in the nation to establish government-sanctioned discrimination against gay people!

Aren't we special?

* According to Laura Leslie, Utah beat us to the punch, so to speak. I figure they get special dispensation because of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Those guys get away with all kinds of crap, so I don't really hold them to the standards of a sane society.

Read the bill ...

... it's not just discrimination against gays and lesbians. It's a general religious exemption that could be used by a magistrate to refuse service to:

*an interracial couple
*a divorced couple
*a couple where one or both parties legally changed gender
*a couple of two different religions
*a couple of a religion different from the magistrate
*a couple where one or both are aged and unable to have children

Americans United for the Separation of Church and State has noted that it is prepared to challenge the law for anyone denied service by a North Carolina magistrate. Just contact them and they'll be filing papers in court so fast it will make your head spin.

William Brisson, Charles Graham, and Ken Waddell are the Dems that voted for it in the House. Dem Ben Clark voted for it in the Senate.
