Watergate, it's not

An editorial in the N&O does a decent job examining the screw up by the NC Ports Authority and Department of Transportation last week when they feted public officials at a Tall Ships party in Beaufort.

Watergate it's not. But this is a disgrace nonetheless, and those who participated owe their constituents, be they citizens whose mayors were there or those in legislative districts, a candid apology. And let's hope officials will have enough sense, the next time such a junket is proposed, to drop anchor on the notion.

I just wish the N&O could find similar resolve and clarity of thinking when it comes to the never-ending stream of corruption spilling from the right wing criminals inside and outside of government. Their activities make the Tall Ships saga look like childs play.

No, Watergate it's not. Nor is it Plamegate, Rovegate, Haliburtongate, Torturegate, Abramoffgate, Taylorgate or Popegate. No, it's not like reporters and editors don't have plenty of material to work with. The track record of the Bush administration is a record of greed and graft that is breathtaking. And where is the N&O's coverage of the State Board of Elections decision to haul in the Puppetmaster's crooked organization? I've seen no news story and no editorial comment whatsoever.

Who owns the N&O?

Who manages the N&O? To whom have they given campaign funds?

Who is the news director? To whom has he/she given campaign funds?

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

The N&O was bought by McClatchy

which also recently bought the Charlotte Observer. Melanie Sill is the managing editor. She's a good person at heart and very competent, but she appears to be slowly slipping down the slope into corporate media madness. I'd be surprised if any of the editors and reporters get involved in campaign contributions.

Happy Friday!

BlueNC has had more than 800 unique visitors each day since Monday, with more than 1000 on Thursday! It's wonderful seeing so many of you jumping into the fray with new ideas and fresh perspectives.

Warm welcomes to you all!

Anglico...

You beat me to the post on this one...

I think that the N&O is making more of a big deal about this one as opposed to the standard government screwing is that 'real people' were 'really screwed'.

The crowds at the America's Sail were huge, it was hot, muggy, etc. There were long waiting lines and some of the ships' tours were cancelled.

Add to that the group of ferry patrons that had to wait for the back-up boat, and you've got a public display of governmental goof-ups.

Normal government grunge is under the carpet much more and easier to get away with not reporting than such a public display.

Thomas

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?

Unfortunately, you are right.

We were in Emerald Isle (I cruised over to Onslow for dinner one night) that week and our neighbors ended up stuck on a bus (with their 2 year old) for 3.5 hours!!!! Then, they got no trip to the tall ships and a cheap, lousy meal.

The Republicans will try to link the Dems to the wait these people had, bet on it. We need to get out in front of this now.

More pissed

The more I think about this, the more pissed off I get.

Why doesn't the N&O call on George Bush to "apologize" to his constituents for leading this country into a war of choice based on a pack of lies? Why don't they ask Donny Rumsfeld to "apologize" to the families of 20,000+ soldiers for unnecessarily killing their sons and daughters?

Apologize my ass.

Sad to say, but our Media Watchdog is at risk of becoming a tired old mutt. The N&O has lost its bark - and its bite has been reduced to chewing on soft little bones like the DOT's stupid publicity stunt.

Come on guys, you can do better than this.

Thanks Thomas

That's a lot of money.

But compared to $8 billion a month in Iraq? Hmmmmm.

PS Looks like the wife is dragging me off to Morehead City in a few minutes. Sorry I won't be able to get together today.

Are you going to eat at the

Sanitary Fish Market?

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

Most likely.

She loves it there. Sort of a tradition for her, I guess.

See ya later! Thanks for holding down the fort!

Maybe not compared to Iraq...

But, remember, that you've got to fight the battles before you can win the war...And right now, the battle in front of us is on this boat fiasco.

No worries on meeting today...I'm clear tomorrow until about 4, then I gotta do a family thing.

Also clear next week, during lunch (12ish-1ish) or evenings after 5.

Enjoy MHC! We don't get that way enough for my taste.
