UPDATE: Open Thread for Bush and Edwards Response

The rebuttal from John Edwards. MSNBC has pushed it back to 9:52 or so, gee, imagine that.

Keith Olbermann: "one of the most extraordinary events of the primary season"

The network of Keith Olbermann, that is how I like to think of MSNBC. John Edwards will be stopping by, on his own dime, to rebutt the lies that George Bush will tell the nation tonight.

Tonight, after President Bush makes yet another argument for continuing the war in Iraq, John Edwards will speak directly to the American people in a nationwide address on MSNBC.

Our campaign has bought airtime on MSNBC immediately following the President's address at 9 p.m., and John Edwards will challenge the President's remarks with a strong call to the nation to end the war now.

...

President Bush will be on every network for free tonight. Our campaign will have to pay for the time on MSNBC so that John Edwards can challenge the President's failed policies. Please consider making a contribution to the campaign—to help us meet the costs of paying for tonight's address—and to help John's campaign continue to grow.

...

--Joe Trippi

If you want to offset the Republican advantage by giving up that cup of coffee and donating $5 - go for it. Or, if you want to really make a dent, give up date night and donate the difference.

First thing I notice? He is focusing entirely on Anbar, which the Marines did on their own starting 18 months ago. It wasn't the surge, the surge gave us Baghdad.

He's a liar.

Comments

I think the only question now....

is when the Democratic Senate and House will get a good hold of their guts and stand up for what the American people want.

he's just getting started

Funny how people always seem to write him off just before he kicks their ass.

Yeah, I can't imagine that Obama or Clinton are writing him off.

As much as the media would like to pretend otherwise.

What impresses me about this

This is a signal to me. Edwards is not running against Obama, Clinton, and the others. He's running for President. This is a presidential move, and he's going to speak directly to the nation. What a freaking breath of fresh air.

Of course, the sitting Senators and Congressmen who are candidates will be interviewed by the talking heads. I like that Edwards is taking matters into his own hands to get his own message out, instead of leaving it to others.

For the first time in my life, I've committed monthly donations to a candidate. Even though I've been politically involved for all of my life, I've never felt so strongly about someone's candidacy as I do. I believe that Edwards is right for the US. I don't think any of the other serious contenders come close.

But he's making the financial commitment to speak to the country directly, instead of relying just on the talking heads to ask him the right questions.

wellll

The truly good thing here is it actually helps the whole party. All the candidates need to make a point of spelling this out as W and the republicans' war. I have to give a 'hell yeah' to Edwards on this one.

Precisely. This is W's war.

This is damn good for the party, no matter who the candidate is after all the primary-ing is done. And it is Edwards who is showing the leadership to do it.

Edwards on TV Tonight

lcloud,
I am with you 100% on this one. I was at his Chapel Hill campaign kick off and he is truly a breath of fresh air. My opinion is that he actually understands "it..us" from the heart. I would like to see an Edwards/Obama ticket. I think we could hold the White House for 16 years and it will probably take that long to straighten out the mess this administration has done.

Edwards / Obama

Yes. That's the ticket.

If those guys would shake hands and team up, the Democratic primary and the O8 election already be over with.

I was in Chapel Hill that day, too.

It's easy to get swept into the frenzy and feeling; Edwards sure knows how to whip up a crowd. Since then, even though I've been partial to Edwards since 2004, I've done my best to listen to all of them, to make a good decision that's not based just on my own emotions.

This is the kind of leadership that the country needs - the sooner the better.

I would like to see an Edwards/Obama ticket. I think we could hold the White House for 16 years and it will probably take that long to straighten out the mess this administration has done.

Talk about a dream team! I would love to see that - and I think we could hold the WH for 16 years then. How long it will take to clean up W's messes will depend on the boldness of the people we elect. That's why I'm "out" for Edwards.

Go John!!!

Smart. Tough. I really like this style. He's getting in W's face and calling him out. He's making it happen.

John Edwards is the greatest fear of the Republican Party....

He must continue on his outspoken path.

It frightens the beltway folks, and facinates the voters at large...even Republican voters who, dismayed by the failure of leadership of the Republican Party, feel the sence to change....and John Edwards represents the change they are seeking.

Go John Edwards.....I may be a nobody...but Marshall Adame supports you! The nomination is not too distant from where you are today.

John Edwards represents the leadership and vision for America the Republicans failed to manifest.

Far from it, Marshall. You're one of the ones who gets to stand up and say "I put my life on the line for my country." You're one of the ones who sees the need for change, and does something about it. By running for Congress, you're continuing to step up and answer the call. Thank you.

But, they actually aren't sharing oil revenue, right?

BAGHDAD, Sept. 13 An Iraqi draft law regarding oil revenue sharing among Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds is falling apart as Kurds have begun signing contracts on their own.

Consensus among the three factions on the bulk of the law was reached in February. Since then, the Kurdish regional government has signed two exploration contracts on its own, a New York Times correspondent in Baghdad reported Thursday.

After the first contract, Sunni legislators began falling away from supporting the bill.

Yes and no....Alocations are made for some furture dates...

and for future projects specifically stated by the Minister of Finance. SO far, from what I understand from my friends in Baghdad, that allocation rarely becomes material, but the Ministry is able to say funds have been allocated.

The Finance Minister Bayn Jabr. arrived in IRaq from 20 years in Iran penniless about 5 years ago.
He has since become a multimillioinaire although he has had no apparent income other than that which he derives from his Iraq government job...about 125,000.00 per year.

The Sunni North of MOsul and Kirkuk realize almost no money from the central government. The build up in those areas has been with U.S. dollars, known as CERP and IRRF money.

Generally speaking about 30% of all oil revenue is grafted and the rest is sold on the market...The revenue goes into a New York account which belongs to the Iraqi Government.

there must be some connections the NCDP has. I've never heard, read, or seen anyone who has as much of a personal connection to Iraq as Marshall. He could tell the people of North Carolina a thing or two. I see that in 08 we will another Shuler (Kissell) and another Kissell (Adame). Wouldn't you hate to lose another 330 race?

We could start by writing LTE's about him to all of the papers

As soon as he's the official candidate, NCDP can push him right out there. Until then, I understand they've got to play it close to the vest, lest someone pop out of the woodwork and accuse Jerry et. al. of playing favorites.

Until that time - Marshall, take it to them. Use Edwards' example and run against Jones, as if you're already the official candidate. Because, um, you rock. :)

yeah I would hate to lose any race

Which means we (by we I mean "the Left") need to think as coolly as possible about how many doors we can knock on (no metaphor; I mean wooden doors attached to homes) multiply that number by 1.2 and then start knocking.

All ideas are welcome, and if you've got a good one, you've also got an obligation to be specific, persistent, and loud. There's a staggering amount of bad policy to fix, and we'll need good strong majorities to stem the bleeding.

Specific idea.

A series of short articles by Marshall in papers throughout his district, or throughout the state, laying out what he lived through in Iraq, what is happening right now (like this oil guy getting rich), all the dirty laundry that people don't know about. It's the issue of the day, he has something to say.

ok great

So we know Adame can write. It's simple enough to get a list of all the papers in his district. We can email and fax the papers, and then we call and follow up with the editor (or other appropriate staff).

That last part is the time consuming part. But it can be done from most anywhere. Who can make the calls?

Off topic, random thought: The mayor's race in Durham could probably use some TLC.

It is not that the Democrats in Office have no courage....

An act of courage is the display of bravery, guts, valor , or daring......The willingness to actually perform an act of courage, in total disregard of one's own welfare, requires resolve, and a commitment to something you may consider greater than yourself.

The good of the "Party" dose not usually rise to that level. Love of family does, seeking justice does, a sincere regard for human rights does, Love of country does. Courage requires selflessness.

That is what our Representatives need.
