Sometimes people make me want to pull out my hair....

I guess I will start by adding all the things that I am doing (since this is all the rage on the site now), even though the list is short:

One corps member
County One Corps "Captain"
Active member Western North Carolina Network of Spiritual Progressives
Campus organizer
And oh yeah full time student

I am graduating in 3 weeks and still don't have a job, because I am holding out, trying to get a position as a community organizer for various organizations.

So anyway, in my new role as said captain, I went to a DFA meeting tonight to present on behalf of Edwards. It was great, my first and I am sure not my last. The meeting was well run and for the most part people were really respectful of people that were supporting other candidates and people asked some really good insightful questions.

However, there was a person there that is indicative of the kind of people that cause me to, as the title suggest, forcefully remove my hair from my scalp. This individual, no matter who was up, would not respectfully listen to the other presenters and allow them to say their piece and then question them. He/she would simply interrupt to make sure that the whole room got her opinion, and buddy boy let me tell you what--this person didn't want a candidate, she wanted Jesus Christ Himself to return to earth and run. She would accept nothing less than ideological purity. (Reminds me of Mao, Stalin, etc.)

Let me make myself clear...do I agree with every thing that Edwards says? No. DO I wish that on certain things he would take a harder line? You betcha. If I was running for president would I take the same positions that he is taking on everything? Absolutely not. But am I still supporting him and do I intend to work my tuchas off for him? YES!

See I don't expect another adult to have the same point of view as I do. I expect a little diversity. And I am also willing to listen to someone that tells me that they made a mistake and are willing to try and correct it. I think that that is an indication of a thinking, mature adult.

So is Edwards as progressive as he could be? No. But he also is out there sticking to what he believes in, much of which is outside of what we are told is "mainstream" America (I don't believe this for a second). That takes courage. That takes conviction. That is not "just politics." Just politics is running to the middle so fast that you lose your head. Just Politics is continuing to use words like "affordable" and "access" when talking about health care, and not Universal. Just Politics is having a volunteer pool that is just working for you and is not also focused on creating change now.

Is Edwards politics as usual? No, he most certainly is not. Is he ideologically pure? Not that either.

And that why I support him.

Hey, what about Sam Spencer and Tricia Cotham

You need some age and gender diversity along with the racial, ideological, and tax bracket diversity! ;-)

Welcome to my world.

I have sat through many a graduate lecture/class and now seminars where some young scientist feels the need to expound upon the meaning of life before asking their question...if they have a question. And, there are always the doubting Thomases, that always see the flaws in every experiment, and who therefore never do any experiments because they are flawed.

ugh

poli-sci classes are horrific.

The worst ones are the poli-sci classes with people who arent poli-sci majors. Im sorry, but I really dont need to sit through a 30 minute uninformed rant from a philosophy or history major about something that was irrelevant when it occurred 200 years ago when Im trying to learn something about what is actually going on in the real world.

At UNCA's poli sci dept

we'd always go around the conference table during the first class meeting, and each student would tell the professor why he or she was taking the class. The poli sci majors would give eloquent, five-sentence paragraphs with highly intellectual reasons for taking the class. We'd always have a few business majors in there saying, "Uh, um, my advisor told me to take it. He said it fit around baseball practice." And those people, if they ever spoke up, were the only ones to ever ruin the tempo of discussions.

Call me an elitist. . .but I think this is where Bush voters come from, even from hippie liberal arts colleges.

people like that

so rarely talk at a place like state that its not really that big of a deal. i just hate the people who think that on every single issue they know more than a professor. there are plenty of times when a professor is wrong, but the guy has a PhD and you have a high school diploma. Be willing to back up your assertion with something like facts and logic or sit down.

whatever. i wont have that stuff ever again. at least in a classroom.

If I Could Find That -

I don't expect another adult to have the same point of view as I do.

I'd fall down in a dead faint. They don't call me Unique Material for nothing, you know.

You can take this quiz and match yourself against the candidates on different issues. No matter which candidate or which party - none of them - not a single one of them matched me by higher than 30%. Go figure.

And oddly enough, I matched Elizabeth Dole more often than some others (not the highest, mind you - just higher than some others) I figure it's because we both say, 'No opinion' a lot) LOL. Maybe - maybe not; but that's what I tell myself. :)

Guess who I matched the most

Only place where Biden and I strongly disagree is War on Drugs. Go figure.

Well....that was fun

Kucinich 58%
Dodd 55%
Obama 55%
Biden 53%
Edwards 53%
Sharpton 53%
Clinton 50%
Richardson 33% (Is this guy really a Democrat?)
Tommy Thompson 33% (Republican)

I'm still with Edwards all the way even though I match with others slightly more often. Heh, heh......it is a shock to the system to find out I match up so closely with Kucinich. Thank goodness they didn't have Gravel in the mix.

If there was a questionnaire based on more local issues I would probably veer more to the right. I'm beginning to wonder. :)

Yes...fun!

My top three:

Kucinich 68%
Sharpton 63%
Clinton 60%

Weird.

I still lean Edwards although we were at 53%.

By the way, if you followed the links to see how your answers matched up with the individual candidates, there were questions (with scores) listed that were never asked. I'm calling Conspiracy! I think the Kucinich people are trying to get us all to vote for him!

Larry Kissell is MY Congressman

I don't think a 10 question survey...

is all the useful in figuring out who you support.

I think that it is really Hillary's people....

They are trying to convince us all that Hilinotn is really a progressive.

Speaking of Hillary, I had a frinend one time who grew up in Chicago around the same time as Hillary. Swears that she will never support Hillary because Hillary was a Republican in Chicago when NOONE was a republican in chicago....

I am not sure about this, but it is an interesting point.

Muy mucho fun

Kucinich 93%---explains why I get all tingly when he speaks
Dodd 75%---explains why I'm the only person in America who thought he did well the other night
Clinton 70%---shocking
Obama 65%---even moreso
Edwards 63%---really thought that I would line up more with him and Obama---must be the drug answers
Biden 63%---who cares. just make this guy senate majority leaders so we can have a sen majority leader with the same-sized balls as Pelosi
Richardson--30%---no, SD, he is NOT a dem. this makes it official.

50% was the best I could

50% was the best I could match someone and that was after I went back and changed some answers because my top match was Clinton. Unfortunately, changing my answers made me agree with Clinton more. She was also my most compatible US Senator but it was still below 50%.

I'm going to go turn on the table saw so I can hack off my voting hand before I do something dangerous...

WAIT!

There is this intangible thing called leadership and you can decide for yourself what that means. It counts for 55% of your decision.

See....there you go.

One Surprise

The only surprise is how low Hillary rated in my results, overall.

Has anyone heard about the threats to Obama?

Just heard on CNN that Secret Service been assigned to him....

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Progressive Discussions

Yup.

(CNN) -- Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been placed under the protection of the U.S. Secret Service, the Secret Service said Thursday.

A statement from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he authorized the protection detail for Obama.

"As a matter of procedure, we will not release any details of the deliberations or assessments that led to protection being initiated," the statement said. "For security reasons we will not release the timing, scope or details of any protective operations."

The Secret Service told CNN no specific threat had been made against Obama.
