Richard Berman destroys the Silver Jews

The Silver Jews are a musical act of the rock and roll indie rock variety. You can listen to their music by clicking here.

Richard Berman is a scumbag.

His lobbying firm, Berman and Company, monthly invents a new astroturf organization to undermine the efforts of watchdog groups. Berman spends millions of dollars to mislead the public about the minimum wage, the dangers of smoking, obesity, mad cow disease, drunk driving, and other serious issues. Berman runs at least 15 organizations that have no actual membership, but are flush with corporate cash.

Not content to merely marginalize workers, promote unsafe food, and trick young people into crippling debt, Berman is now actively dismembering obscure bands. Attacks on the working class are one thing, but I promise you that Berman's assault on the hipsters of America will not go unpunished.

Silver Jews frontman David Berman is Richard Berman's son. David Berman has announced, on his label's message board, that he is ending the band in order to undo the evil of his father.

Well... he didn't promise to undo ALL the evil, but he clearly has some difficulties with his father's vocation.

Wonkette describes the episode as "the beltway story of Oedipus."

Berman's description of his father is a follows:

My father is a despicable man. My father is a sort of human molestor.

An exploiter. A scoundrel. A world historical $^@#&*%$ing son of a &!&@#. (sorry grandma)

You can read about him here.

My life is so wierd. It's allegorical to the nth. My father went to college at Transylvania University.

You see what I'm saying.

A couple of years ago I demanded he stop his work. Close down his company or I would sever our relationship.

He refused. He has just gotten worse. More evil. More powerful. We've been "estranged" for over three years.

Even as a child I disliked him. We were opposites. I wanted to read. He wanted to play games.

He is a union buster.

When I got out of college I joined the Teamsters (the guards were union organized at the Whitney).

I went off to hide in art and academia.

I fled through this art portal for twenty years. In the mean time my Dad started a company called Berman and Company.

He props up fast food/soda/factory farming/childhood obesity and diabetes/drunk driving/secondhand smoke.

He attacks animal lovers, ecologists, civil action attorneys, scientists, dieticians, doctors, teachers.

His clients include everyone from the makers of Agent Orange to the Tanning Salon Owners of America.

He helped ensure the minimum wage did not move a penny from 1997-2007!

The worst part for me as a writer is what he does with the english language.

Though vicious he is a doltish thinker and his spurious editorials rely on doublethink and always with the Lashon Hara.

American Prospect article on Berman:

It won't surprise you to learn that Richard Berman is one of the leaders in the fight against the Employee Free Choice Act. No doubt Berman's opposition to workers' rights is purely principled, and not at all related to the millions of dollars he has been paid to attack working class families.

Great Googly Moogly.

That is one bad family spat.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Wow. No comment needed.

I would like to add that Rick Berman is currently the mastermind of those ugly and deceitful anti- Employee Free Choice Act ads that portray union members as Sopranos-like mafia thugs.

So the next time you see one of those anti-union ads from a group with some ambiguously feel-good name like "The Center for Union Facts" or "Coalition for Workplace Democracy", please know who's behind the curtain. It's scum like this.

And just to be clear, THIS Rick Berman is not THIS Rick Berman, a great and respectable man. May he live long and prosper.

And This Berman Nailed A Millionare Sports Union Leader

The AFL-CIO Center for Union Facts condemned the NFLPA's Upshaw for his understated compensation of $2,400,000 in 2006. I have just informed them of Upshaw's LM2 Dept of Labor report verified 2007 compensation of $10,400,000 with another $10,000,000 in deferred income coming for a record total of $20,400,000 if he leaves today without being fired for just cause. The NFLPA 10 man Executive Committee should be fired immediately for rubber stamping this outrageous abusive union manipulation, along with every team union Player Representative. Upshaw and his insider crony's cabal use $900 per hour lawyers (Condon, Kessler(s), Berthelson, Yablonski, Depaso, etc) to play the NFLPA "democracy" like a piano, with all of them collecting millions from union and Players Inc funds. The NFLPA is the only union in the world built on the 3.4 year careers of vane naive adolescence members who scorn education with more than 50% turning their backs on completing college even though it is paid for through scholarships. This is a union labor's most perfect recipe for corruption.

If I were to run for Executive Director In addition to giving the Executive Director's $20.4 million back to the disabled players, dire needs players, and increase retirement benefits for ALL players and I would recover all the money possible from Upshaw and the attorneys and his crony's and fire at least 50% of the NFLPA staff including Andrea Collins and Carl Francis and return all of that recovered money to the benefit of the union members.

That's confusing

I don't understand what you're trying to say here Max and that article was quite strange. The ALF-CIO is in no way affiliated with the Center for Union Facts, as implied in your comment. They are, in fact, bitter rivals.

more to the point

More to the point, the AFL-CIO has tens of millions of members, and the Center for Union Facts is four or five staff hired by Berman to promote policies that hurt workers and consumers.

I edited my comment (only slightly) because I made an embarrassing factual error - which Blue South corrected below

11 Million

AFL-CIO federation has 11 million total members. Change to Win groups represent another 6 million plus members.

So they both have more than a million members per staff that the Center for Union Facts Lies has. Not surprisingly the number of mentions in articles are not quite at the same ratio.

"Keep the Faith"

Holy Crapoly, Batman!

Glad somebody was on that call taping it.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.
