In praise of Lance

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

We've had a lot of newcomers around lately, which is always exciting. But it also means that many people may not know about the person who operates more or less behind the curtain. His name is Lance, and he is worthy of sainthood.

Lance has a real full-time job, having just graduated from law school, that keeps him hopping on all fronts. Plus he and wonderful wife have a new baby. How he finds time to monitor BlueNC and respond in our many moments of crisis is beyond me. But he does that on a regular basis, and he does a lot more. He's always tweaking the site for performance improvements and new features - and most of what he does we rarely even know about - it's that seamless.

So as you're out on the Tubes today, I hope you'll take a moment to thank Lance for all he does.

Huzzah!

(That's supposed to go along with A's graphic.)

The upkeep on any website can be a pain in the butt; I know that from my hubby's experience. Keeping one as busy as this one running as smoothly as it does when it's not your actual job to do that - incredible. Thank you so much for what you're doing, Lance. You're helping to advance public, progressive discourse in North Carolina by light years.

Thanks again.

Lance, you're my hero

are you blushing yet?

I'm not going to say how beautifully things are working for me, b/c that will jinx it. Site is running nicely so far.

Thank you Lance.

Yesterday BlueNC seemed to be down. I got this weird Drupal error when I tried to view the page. It looked like a serious problem and I figured it would take you guys days to fix the problem. I came back an hour later and everything was back to normal. That's some rapid response from a volunteer!

Thanks, Lance.

BlueNC is a grand educational (and entertainment :) tool for the grassroots movements.

A tip to Targator's role in introducing BlueNC, and in introducing it to me.

And to you, Anglico ... and the many contributors ... mentors, all.

Thanks

BlueNC is daily must read tubes for me. Add me to the list of those grateful for your wizardry.

Lance, the Bluest

Lance,

You've kept this virtual train on the interrails, and without your wizardry we would all be banging away at our little blogs, hoping someone would pay attention.

Thanks to all your hard work people are paying attention.

Lance is the best

Not just because he does all this amazing techie stuff but because he is so wonderfully patient with any complaints. He always treats people with the utmost respect and fairness. And, in this volatile mix of blogging and politics, with all the weird shit flying around, that's about the nicest compliment I can imagine. Hat's off to Lance. And good on you, Anglico, for letting people know.

I like Sir Lance A Lot

ok, that was bad, but it's hard to come up with something original here.

I would lend my voice to a greatful community that has been given a forum to learn from and the opportunity to contribute to the greater good. I have never had a concern or problem that once voiced hasn't been taken care of quickly. I know that I can sit down at a computer anywhere, anytime and come to a site that I consider to be my home, where I can read articles that are not only timely and addresses North Carolina, but are well researched and written by people I trust.

None of this would be possible if this site were complicated to navigate or trolls went unaddressed. None would be possible without the behind-the-scenes tweaking and R&M provided by our man behind the curtain. I am greatful for all the time and effort Lance puts in to keep this site running seamlessly. I am also greatful for his wonderful family who shares him with us.

Thank you Lance, you are my hero!

Thank you

I put the time in to this site that I do because I believe that the communty that gathers here has the ability to make a significant positive political change in a state that (though most don't realize it yet) is of key import to national progressive politics. I believe that I've seen that potential in action, and I don't think we've achieved anything near what is possible. And there is nothing about this website or the server it's running on that makes this true. The people gathered here could be wasting each others' time and spinning wheels. But it isn't. Thanks to everyone for making this project a worthwhile use of our time!

You sobered up :)

Speaking of Lance

How's the "teaser" thing working for everyone? It's driving me batty.

(Sorry, Lance, I couldn't find the site-stuff thread.)

Not working for me

I may have misunderstood it's purpose, so when I posted earleir, I put the first paragraph and the Gov. Hunt pic in it, then put the rest of the post in the body, subject whatever that second blank box is. When I clicked post, the first paragraph and pic weren't there. Did I do it wrong?

Yes, but so did I

That is, I shouldn't have dumped a new feature out there without explaining it.

If you leave the teaser box alone (and empty), then everything works the way it always has. If that's what you want, just ignore it.

But if you want to use it, you can put in a custom teaser. I used to have this option on other blogging platforms, and missed it a lot here when we first got started. I don't blog so much anymore, but I just just kind of assumed that others would enjoy it as well.

See, the thing is that the first paragraph or two of your blog post may not be the best explanation of what lies beneath the fold, and sometimes you have to include four or five paragraphs in the "teaser" to even give people a guess as to what you're writing about. With the custom teaser field, you're free to actually "tease" with the teaser. That is, if you write a long post about a county convention you attended, you can then put something in the teaser like "How did I end up holding a beer in one hand and a chocolate sculpture of Venus de Milo in the other while singing "Marzey Doats?" It's kind of a long story." And with a few lines, you give someone a good reason to read the whole post.

I've noticed that the Southern Dem does this a lot with her own posts, writing a teaser paragraph and then using the <!--break--> to start her real post below the fold. This takes good advantage of the teasers that appear on the front page to draw the reader into her posts (which are often long and, while they are always rewarding, may seem daunting without the welcome mat she lays out in the teaser). Now, if she wants to, SD (and anyone else) can set up a solid teaser without having to give up the first paragraph(s) of their blog post.

Is the new

teaser box any different than using the break feature?

Thank you Lance

for giving me a forum and a soapbox I can stand on and actually have people come to and listen to what I have to say. You have given all us an opertunity to catogorize our soapbox speaches in such a way that I can see what I am interested in and feel confident that folks are listening and acting!

I can also learn other things that I did not even know I should be interested in. And thats the real beauty of this site. An excellent forum to educate and be educated at!

You have given us a high quality block of clay that we as a blogging community are molding into a masterpiece!

You da man! Salute!!!

But where does the teaser appear

once you have posted it?

On any page that lists less than the full post

Here's a quick example. Say you post the following:

Title: This Is My Blog Post
Teaser: Was it what the Captain said that changed my life forever, or the way he said it? Read on to find out....
Body: 'Twas a dark and stormy night, and the captain said to his crew, "Gather round, and I'll tell ye a tale." So the crew gathered round, and the captain said: "'Twas a dark and stormy night, and the captain said to his crew, "Gather round, and I'll tell ye a tale." So the crew gathered round, and the captain said: "'Twas a dark and stormy night, and the captain said to his crew, "Gather round, and I'll tell ye a tale." So the crew gathered round, and the captain said: "'Twas a dark and stormy night, and the captain said to his crew, "Gather round, and I'll tell ye a tale." So the crew gathered round, and the captain said....

On teaser pages (these include the front page, bluenc.com/blogs and your own blog), your post would look like this:

Title: This Is My Blog Post
Teaser: Was it what the Captain said that changed my life forever, or the way he said it? Read on to find out....

But when people click and go to the page where your blog post sits in its glorious entirety, they see:

Title: This Is My Blog Post

Because the teaser is now completely separate from the blog post, you can make it a more effective way of sharing with the reader the reason why she might want to read your post, whether it be the burning question you'll answer, a glimpse of the blinding insight you'll share or a juicy nibble from the hot gossip you'll be spreading. Without the custom teaser, you can do the same thing, but only if you are careful to make sure that the first paragraphs of your post work both as an intro and and advertisement.

There's really a lot of potential here

...for the particularly creative-minded among us. The more I think about it, the more I feel like an ass for putting it out there without explaining the potential. Doubly so because of the title of this thread....

I love the idea

If you go back in to edit and you did NOT select an original teaser, you can edit it to suit you. The only problem is that the teaser doesn't show in preview, so you do have to take a look at the finished product and edit it if the cut is in a weird place.
