Paradox in BlueSC

A recent story shows that Edwards and Romney are leading in SC...in money raised. Even though the recent polls show that they are both losing. What gives?

On the Republican side the thing is close, but on the Democratic side it's a blow-out.

South Carolinians aren't putting their presidential campaign dollars where polling shows their hearts are.

A Federal Election Commission report issued this morning showed that Pickens native John Edwards, a former North Carolina senator, topped the donor list among 17 candidates who filed reports...Republican Mitt Romney, a distant third or fourth in most state polls received the most money among Republicans and was close behind Edwards.

Edwards, who was John Kerry's running mate in the 2004 presidential election, raised $186,109 from his native state, Clinton, $36,100; and Obama, $31,811.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, took in $171,425 while former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani received $127,050 and Arizona Sen. John McCain, who leads Giuliani in polling, listed $122,640.

Where is that Cult money coming from?

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, took in $171,425

why is this?* J

Simple! Romney has been in South Carolina 9 times in the past year and half campaigning. 90% of his donations are Mormon related.

Cut or Cult?

or maybe cute?

cult

I agree. When we throw around words like "hitler," "fascist," or "cult," we do ourselves a disservice.

I know you've got reason to be pissed, I sure do. But given the choice between getting angry or getting even, I hope I have the discipline to be strategic.

Romney is too dangerous to be dismissed with insults. Calling Bush stupid in 2004 didn't win us too many votes.

Couple thoughts.

What do polls measure this far out?
We know that many voters aren't paying attention this far out, so when they are called and asked who they support? This isn't Iowa or New Hampshire, South Carolina is still new to the "early states" and when I lived there last time almost no one showed up even if it was early.

What does the money tell us this early?
First, it tells us that Republicans are raising much more money from SC than Democrats. That is not surprising if you have lived there, it is a very Red, very conservative state. So, there are a couple thoughts that pop into my head. First, there just aren't that many Democrats giving money and those who are giving money are small donors. Except for the Edwards contacts that he has maintained over the years. In this scenario, the huge cash lead means nothing because it comes largely from a few dedicated donors. The other scenario is that Edwards has the kind of supporters that matter, donors. Those who not only support him, but who are willing to put their money where their support is. In this scenario, the polls reflect name recognition and hype and the $$$ reflect the swell of support for Edwards.

If that were true...

he would probably have raised about $25 Million in the first quarter, as did the other eveil, tools of the rich, special interests. Instead, as that crazy, yelling guy on MSNBC said "John Edwards is Public Enemy #1 on Wall Street"

Oh, we're just funnin' around right now

But the stuff in Shrum's book that a friend who used to work for Kerry confirmed to be true didn't do John any favors in my book.

to clarify

the stuff Shrum said Kerry said. I wont touch the veracity of the stuff Edwards disavowed.

And it's not like I'm that excited by the field anyways ...

I've seen that video

AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I SAID.

She was just addressing the Edwards stuff. I specifically mentioned what the Kerry camp had to say about Edwards, not what Shrum had to say about Edwards.

lots of words

but as I read back over your comments the only thing you said was something vague about Shrum and Kerry.

Who all have you worked for?

And who'd you quit? I'm not trying to pass judgment here, I'm just curious. You don't have to respond if you'd rather not.

Well:

The campaigns that I was paid for work on, was promised pay for, or had a formal relationship with -

Bowles for Senate ('04)
A local Mecklenburg School Board Race
Bill Glass for Congress
Larry Kissell for Congress

... and I ran myself back in 2006. I managed the Glass campaign for awhile, but quit because I didn't have the time to manage a congressional campaign.

I like the...

"was promised pay for" classification. An important distinction.

Yeah, I can imagine...

Luckily, I've only ever volunteered, so pay was never an issue. I can see how it could be a big problem, though, particularly if payroll decisions go through multiple people.

or when

people say they make payroll decisions and dont. Campaigns are fun, but too often they involve people puffing themselves up for ego, often at the expense of the campaign itself.
