Final - UNC by 10. The streak is safe.

Ty Lawson needs to return asap, and we really miss Bobby Frasor. Hansborough had another great night, and the team shot free throws like they are supposed to be shot.

Yes! The record may fall, but not *this* day

To paraphrase:

"Hold your ground, Sons of William Davie, Tar Heels, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the record of UNC falls, when we forsake our hoops and break all rules of fair play, but it is not this day. An hour of overtimes and shattered pride, when the memory of Dean comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we play! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you *stand and shoot, Men of Carolina!*"

(with apologies to Peter Jackson and Viggo Mortensen)

Aye, that's right up there with the St. Crispin's Day

speech from Henry V:

...
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now abed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

both of those speeches

from ROTK and HV are among of the most inspiring pre-battle speeches in English literature. I've always figured that Tolkien was inspired by Shakespeare when he wrote it.

My favorite delivery of the St. Crispin's Day speech is the one that Kenneth Branagh gives in the version of HV he directed and starred in.

Missing the biggest news of the weekend?

Seems everyone missed the biggest news this weekend.
Barack Obama wins primary contests in Washington, Nebraska, Louisiana and the Virgin Islands. Then Hillary Fires her campaign manager. Obama goes on to win in Maine and tops it off with a Grammy!
Seems like Barack is having a pretty good weekend.
Is everyone tired of the Primaries?
I know Edwards is out, but come on now, you better get excited, 2 and a half months from now the whole circus comes down here.

Excited, sure

But this is *basketball*. ;)

He doesn't get it

He's a furener. :) On certain days basketball trumps politics.

I'm sorry LiberalNC....I just can't get excited about Obama. I'll do my best to not rain on your parade, but he just leaves me feeling....eh.

Indeed yes

On certain days basketball trumps politics.

Yup. I thought about that when the UNC-Dook game was on the tee-vee earlier this week and they panned to a shot of John Edwards in the crowd. :)

i chatted with the edwards briefly

funny part about John-- He seemed bored during the game, looked much happier when he was meeting and greeting Tar Heels during breaks. Some people are just political animals; he is definitely one of them, in the best sort of way.

Good point

looked much happier when he was meeting and greeting Tar Heels

Could've been the way the game was going, though. :/

he's a MUPPET!

he's a MUPPET!

edit: WOAH, that was meant for the Hansborough post. I hold no such feelings for Sen. Edwards.

Which one?

"Psycho T" does look a little like Beaker, maybe. Acts more like Animal, though. ;)

It must take a lot....

...to remain unmoved in the face of history.
I luvs ya anyway :-)

Obama doesn't move me

History....now history being made gets me all tingly..

That doesn't mean I won't support him enthusiastically in the general when it rolls around.

We ARE moved

In fact, my dad damn near stomped a hole in the floor before Hansborough's free throws late in the 2nd overtime finally sealed it. ;)

Oh MY!

I'm crying I'm laughing so hard. We were moved here as well. My husband paced a groove in the floor.

Heh

Sometime I'll have to tell you about my dad courting my mom when she was in nursing school and UNC was on its run to the '57 championship; he'd just graduated from Carolina the year before and was as much of a basketball fan then as he is now. There was a TV in the lounge at my mom's dorm but their curfew was 11pm. Of course, the semifinal and final of the NCAAs that year both went to triple overtimes, WELL past 11pm... my mom very nearly got into a world of trouble, LOL.

Oh...I can imagine she did!

...bet it was worth it, though.

Yep

Perfect! :)

But, but...

Don't you know that the only sport that matters is soccer?
Or football as everyone else in the world calls it.

soccer can be kind of exciting

:)

GGggoooooaaaaaaalllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every 4th year I might be tempted to agree with you.

I am curious, which team(s) or leagues does a football fan from Belgium follow? Ajax, Dutch league or is there a Belgian Premier division?

Person County Democrats

duh

Of course there is a premier Belgian division.
Not that I follow it, I never watch any sports.
Is there a life outside politics?

well said.

LiberalNC -

I care nothing for basketball (this will get me thrown out of the state, for sure). I am absolutely thrilled by the possibility that the NC primary will mean something, and that the Obama and Clinton roadshows will come here.

While I was shocked and dismayed when Edwards suspended his campaign, I have no problem supporting Obama - he was always my number 2 choice. More than his policy ideas, it is is way of bringing people together that gives me (dare i say it) hope for the future. I believe he is our best chance left in the Democratic race for true and lasting change. I think that John Edwards drove a lot of positions and moved the front runners towards positions I can support.

I like Obama's approach to people. I like his approach to health care.

I just like him.

I look forward to being able to vote for him and having it mean something.

I know that there are those in the Edwards supporter camp who will see this as breaking ranks, and I suppose it is, but that's politics. If John were still in, I might still make this decision.

Trust me.

There are a lot of things about me that the Bible is against. Basketball isn't even mentioned. :)

The others probably aren't either

The question now is this:

With Obama having been predicted to win those states, can he now win D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Hawaii (duh), Wisconsin, Wyoming, Vermont and Mississippi. If so, then I think clinton's strategy of winning Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas is in big trouble.

All the media will have been talking about for most of a month is Obama wins, Obama wins another, Obama wins yet another, Obama wins yet another.

So, I see three outcomes.

  1. This goes exactly as predicted and we end up with a tie, which will be bad for the party no matter which way it goes. We either lose older women and Hispanics or we lose energy and votes in the young and African-American population.
  2. Obama winning and winning and winning (even though the delegate count will stay close), will lead to strong public opinion sway in his direction, which will lead to a flood of superdelegates and the race will be "over".
  3. Clinton wins one of these upcoming races that she is not expected to win and the media turns it into "Clinton is back!" and it is over, with her winning.

Related to #2 and prediction

momentum

Or, to #3 if she wins somewhere on Tuesday.

Actually, I make a prediction here and now. If Obama sweeps Tuesday he doesn't lose another race. If Clinton wins one of the races Tuesday, she wins it all.

Isn't that kinda the same strategy problem Giuliani had

when he ignored the early states and concentrated on Florida?

i know what you're saying, Muse

but did you hear Obama's speech last night. It was phenomenal. He really has something. Whether or not he'll make a better president than Hillary is hard to know, but he definitely does not leave me "...eh" just my 2 cents...
